CLOTHES HANGER BAR Filed Jan. 16, 1952 mmvroza. 1 1660 P48410885 lrrokuey Patented Aug. 24, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTHES HANGER BAR Viggo Rasmussen, Minneapolis, Minn. Application Janua ry 16, 1952, Serial No. 266,638
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device to be used in-connection with a clothes hanger and more particularly with a Wire clothes hanger. This invention is adapted to be used. with a clothes hanger made from a wire or rod in connection with hanging such garments as trousers from the cross member of such a hanger.
It is generally the practice for cleaning establishments to use and furnish a hanger having an elongated wire or rod at its bottom with upwardly extending supporting means at. the ends thereof. Such supporting means commonly converge to and are connected to a supporting hook. Usually trousers are hung over said elongated wire or rcd when such trousers are delivered in a cleaned and pressed or pressed condition. This practice is not altogether satisfactory as said elongated member tends to buckle or bend under the weight of the trousers hung thereon. Said elonated member also tends to crease the trousers hung thereon.
It i an object of this invention to provide a device adapted to overlie a wire hanger and be secured thereto to provide a hanging surface for trousers which will not objectionally crease the same.
It is another object of this invention to provide a device for overlying a wire hanger which will provide rigidity for the elongated horizontal wire or rod of such a hanger to provide a satisfactory hanging surface for garments such as trousers.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a device made of a suitable material such as wood or plastic to overlie the elongated horizontal wire or rod of a wire clothes hanger and be secured thereto so as to remain firmly in position and yet be readily removable.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device or bar made of a suitable material such as wood or plastic having a slot about three sides thereof adapted to receive therein the horizontal elongated wir or rod of a wire clothes hanger and also a small portion of the supporting means adjacent the ends thereof so as to be secured firmly in position and yet be readily removable therefrom.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of applicant's device mounted on a clothes hanger;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view with a portion shown in dotted line;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view;
Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation;
Fig. 5 is a view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows;'and r Fig. 6 is an enlarged View of an end portion in elevation with a portion broken away and a portion shown in dotted line.
Referring to the drawings, a clothes hanger IE3 of very common form is shown. This is a common variety ofa wire clothes hanger. Said hanger comprises an elongated wire or rod Illa, upwardly extending members Iflb which converge or extend to an upper supporting hook I00.
Again referring to the drawings, applicants device comprises a bar I I, as shown, and while it could take various shapes, it is shown as being generally rectangular in horizontal section with a rounded or convexly curved top portion Ila. Applicants device or bar may be made of any suitable material having substantial rigidity. The end portions I It of said bar II have open-ended slots I2 extending vertically therethrough. Said slots respectively extend inwardly an equal distance to a point where the space therebetween is approximately equal to the length of said elonated Wire or rod Illa with an allowance for a slight longitudinal movement. The bottom portion Iic of said bar II has a slot or groove I3 extending longitudinally thereacross and for a considerable depth therein. Said slot I3 is in alignment with and merges with slots I2. Preferably said slots I2 and I3 have a width just sufficient to be able to receive therein said rod Ilia and the lower side portions adjacent its ends.
In operation, a hanger I0 and a member or bar II are respectively taken in hand. An end portion lib of said member II is placed about a side portion of member IOb adjacent one of the end portions of rod Hm. Said side portion is received in the slot I2 in said end portion. Said member II is then pushed downwardly until rod IIla is received in slot I3 and the other side portion III) is received in the other slotted end portion of bar I I. Bar I I is thus securely placed in position. It has slight longitudinal movement but not a sufiicient amount to permit it to become dislodged from position by use. One or more pairs of trousers may be hung on said bar II. Said bar will not bend or buckle under the weight of such trousers. The rounded upper surface I la of said bar I I will have little tendency, if any, to cause a crease to be made in trousers hung thereon. Said rounded surface has substantial width and a substantially non-slipping surface so that when trousers are hung thereover sufiicient friction is present to greatly minimize any tendency for trousers to slip ofi.
Thus it is seen that I have provided a hanger bar which is easily and inexpensively made and which may be made of material which may be otherwise considered waste material. It is a general practice to deliver mens trousers which have been cleaned and pressed or pressed on awire clothes hanger. A very substantial number of such trousers are kept in the home on such hangers. Applicants hanger bar when used on a wire clothes hanger substantially improves such a hanger as a means upon which to hang garments such as mens trousers.
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device adapted to be used with a wire clothes hanger, which hanger has a horizontal rod or wire with supporting means at the ends thereof comprising an elongated member generally rectangular in vertical section having a rounded top and having end portions with vertically extending open-ended slots therethrough,
the bottom portion of said member having a second slot extending longitudinally therethrough and having side walls of susbtantial height, said walls being spaced to closely fit said horizontal rod or wire whereby said device can be placed on said hanger with said horizontal member disposed in said second slot and said supporting members disposed respectively in said first mentioned slots.
2. A device adapted to be used with a wire clothes hanger, which hanger has a horizontal wire or rod and upwardly extending members at the ends thereof comprising an elongated member of substantially rigid material generally rectangular in horizontal section with a convexly curved top surface and having substantial vertical dimension, the same having vertically extending open-ended slots in its end portions and having a second slot of substantial depth extending longitudinally therethrough and said slots having walls spaced to closely fit said upstanding members whereby said device is adapted to be disposed on said hanger with said upwardly extending members disposed in said first mentioned slots and said horizontal wire disposed in said second mentioned slot.
