A cooling source C is next applied to the thus' shrunk curled lashes in order to set the same at the desired curvature. 12. of the exemplified embodiment. As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the post 94 is provided with a cavity 100 to receive the lens L with clearance. The post 94 is detach ably mounted on the member 132 by means of bolt104. The post 94 includes a downwardly projecting shank 126 which interfits in the slot 128 of the member .1112 to locate said post. The transverse bar 103 (FIG. 9) of member 102 is suitably slotted or cut away, as indicated at 131*, to provide the requisite clearance for the flanges 18 of the eye shell seated on the post. The member 102 is generally T-shaped and comprises the said transverse bar 103 (FIG. 9) and slide bar 105, the latter being mounted in the slot 101 (FIGS. 6 and8) provided therefor at the underside of the dial plate 32. The memberv 102 is supported in position by the pin member 1% (FIGS. 5 and 6.) having a shoulder portion 168 which rides on the rails 109 of the slot 1100f the dial plate 32, the threaded end 112, of pin member 106-being threadedly engaged in the opening 114 of bar 105. The member 106 includes an upstanding stud 116 which is disposed for engagement by a push pin 118, as shown in FIG. 6, to actuate member 102. The pin 118 is mounted in a longitudinal bore 120 of the slide 40, and its position is adjustably determined by the adjusting screw 122 which is threadedly engaged in the aperture 124 at one end of the slide. It will be understood that on predetermined advance movement of the slide towards the post the pin 118 will engage the stud 116 to push the member 102 to the right, viewing FIGS. 5 and 6. The bar 105 carries a pin 107 which is connectedto the pin 107' by the spring 111, the pin 107' being fixed to the dial plate as indicated at 113 (FIG. 5). The pin 107 extends through an elongated slot 115, and bar 105 is biased intoengagement with said pin by pull spring 111. The member 102 is thus relatively'movable with respect to pm 107' on the engagement of pin 118 and stud 116. V l
The curling apparatus includes a clamping device which is arranged to open and close in response to slide movement, said clamping device comprising a pair ofcomplementary interengageable clamping rings 132 and 134, the latter clamping ring being fixedly secured at its opposite ends to the slide by screws 136 (FIG. 9). The clamping rings are of a configuration complementary to the configuration of the forming face. The clamping ring 134 is fixed in position with respect to the slide, and interfits over the forming face 54 back of the leading edge thereof and adjacent to the peripheral shoulder 138 of said forming member, as shown in FIG. 5. The first clamping ring 134 is of rectangular cross section and is positioned to help face 54. The movable clamping ring 132 is inte'rengageable with the clamping ring 134 for clamping the free being mounted to the side wall 154 by srcews 158 which "extend through the aperatures 160 (FIG. 2) and spacers slot 162 (FIG; 10) comprising inclined cam surfaces 164, straight cam surfaces 166, inclined cam surfaces 168,
and straight cam surfaces 170, said cam surfaces coacting with the cam follower 148 on screw 150 to impart the requisite pivotal movement to the crank arm 144 and its clamping ring 132. With the slidein the-fully retracted position, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the follower 148 will be disposed at the extreme end of the cam slot 162 defined by cam surfaces 1 64, and'the clamping ring 132 will be in the fully open position. As the slide and forming member advance towards the post the cam follower 148 rides up the lower cam surface 164 to thereby pivot the clamping ring 132 into engagement with the underside of the lashes 22, preliminary to the curling thereof. When the follower 148 reaches the end of cam surface 164 the clamping ring132 will be disposed forwardly of the clamping ring 134 and out of clamping relation therewith. On further advance of the slide, with the follower 148 riding along lower horizontal cam surface 166, a dwell will take place in the pivotal movement of the clamping ring 132, during which the needles 58 will -be advanced through the lashes or filaments to uniformly space and fan out the same, said needles extending through the narrow gap defined between the external surface of the eye shell and the underside of the forming face 54. On this phase F slide the follower 148 will ride up the inclined surface 168 to finish forming the lashes around the forming face, and

4. Apparatus for curling the lashes of a dolls eye, comprising means for releasably holding the dolls eye in position, a forming member disposed in predetermined relation with respect to said holding means and having a forming face of predetermined curvature over which the lashes are to be formed, means for clamping free end portions of the lashes in position over said forming face to impart a corresponding curvature to the lashes, and means providing for relative separation between said forming member and the clamped lashes formed thereover to dispose the thus clamped lashes in a tensionless condition free of said forming member to permit the same to shrink upon thermal treatment.
5. Apparatus for curling the lashes of a dolls eye, comprising a support, a slide reciprocable on said support carrying a forming member and a device for spacing and fanning out the lashes disposed below said forming member, a post for releasably holding the dolls eye in position and a clamping device conjointly movable therewith mounted on said support and operatively associated with said slide for movement thereby on predetermined advance movement thereof towards said post, said clamping device being movable between open and closed conditions in response to the movement of said slide, said forming member having a forming face of predetermined curvature and said clamping device in the closed condi- 1 tion thereof being in proximity to said forming face, the
advancing movement of said slide towards said post spac-' ing and farming out the lashes and forming the same over said forming face to impart a corresponding curvature thereto with the clamping device closely to thereby clamp the lashes inposition over said forming face, the
continued advancing movement of said slide moving said post and clamping device away from said forming member to thereby space the formed clamped lashes from said forming face to permit said lashes to shrink in a tensionless condition on thermal treatment, and means providing for relative movement between said forming member and slide on the closing of said clamping device.
6. Apparatus for curling the lashes of a dolls eye, comprising a support, a slide reciprocable on said support carrying a forming member and a device for spacing and fanning out the lashes disposed below said forming member, a post for releasably holding the dolls eye in 1 position and a clamping device conjointly movable therewith mounted on said support and operatively associated with said slide for movement thereby on predetermined advance movement thereof towards said post, said device comprising a series of spaced needles arranged in a generally conical relation with the ends of said needles facing said post, said clamping device being arranged to open and close in response to the movement of said slide, said forming member having a forming face of predetermined curvature and said clamping device in the closed condition thereof being in proximity to said forming face, the movement of said slide towards said post projecting said needles through the lashes for spacing and fanning out the lashes and forming the same over said forming face to impart a corresponding curvature thereto with the clamping device closing to therebyclamp the lashes in position, the continued movement of said slide moving said post and clamping device as an assembly away from said forming member to thereby movethe formed clamped lashes away from said forming face to permit said lashes to shrink in a tensionless condition, and means providing for relativemovement between said forming member and slide subsequent to the closing of said clamping device.
