' INVENTQR A TTORNEY Patented Nov. 20, 1928.
PATENT OFFICE.
CLARA I-I. LOCKE, OFPLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
EYELASI-I CURLER.
Application filed March 23, 1928.
My invention relates to hair curlers and refers more particularly to a device and method for curling eyelashes.
One object of my invention is to provide a cheap, effective device for curling eyelashes,
Another object of my invention consists of the method of curling eyelashes.
I accomplish these results by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views in which F igure 1, is an isometric view of device.
Figure 2 is a partial section of Figure 1, taken on the horizontal axis of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an elevation illustrating the eyelashes in their normal position.
Figure 5 is an elevation illustrating method of the application of the eyelash curler.
Figure 6 is an elevation illustrating the eyelashes after having been curled.
b The eyelash curler is composed of a handle 1, provided With a ferrule 2, into which handle fits the curling element 3, Which is composed of a substantially flat piece of suitable material Which is bent at right angles at 4:, having its depending end rounded at 5 and 6 and curved at 7.
in operation, the thumb 8, of the operatofis hand, is placed under the eyelashes 9 and the curling device, as illustrated in Figure l, is clasped in the hand with the depending end of the curling device in contact with the eyc lashes directly above the thumb aforesaid, the eyelashes being located between the depending end id the thumb.
In curl as the eyelashes the curler placed on one side of the eyelashes, shown in Figure 5, is drawn along the thumb toward the hand and simultaneously the thumb is pressed firmly toward the curler and moved away from the hand and the obgect of using the thumb is to prevent the hairs of the eye lashes from being unduly bruised or injured.
The modus operandi is exactly the same Serial No. 264,175.
as in curling a feather With the dull end of a knife.
To completely curl all of the eyelashes, the thumb and curler are moved to different portions of the eyelashes until all of the eyelashes are curled completely.
In curling the eyelashes it is necessary for the operator to stand before a mirror that is Well illuminated, curling the right eyelashes with the right hand and curling the left eyelashes with the left hand.
A slight or pronounced curl may be obtained by the continuation of the operation upon each individual eyelash or upon several at a time until the desired curl is obtained.
The curl of the eyelashes Will be retained when eyelash black is applied and will remain curled until the eyes are Washed.
Having thus described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention and the modus operandi of the same, I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction of the device referred to, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim 1. An eyelash curler comprising a device of substantially flat ribbon shaped material, mounted on a suitable handle, the end of said device being bent at right angles thereof, having its depending end curved at the corner portions and its edges rounded.
2. The method of curling eyelashes placing a narrow hard rounded object upon the eyelashes to be curled With the said eyelashes between the thumb and the object and movin thumb and object in opposite directto s successively until the proper curl is obtained.
Si 'ned at Y e W York, in the county of New -Yorl( and State of New York, this 20th day of March, 1928.
