LAUNDRY DEVICE FOR BABY DIAPERS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 27. 1956 INVEN TOR. A/aw Coarse/draw United States Patent LAUNDRY DEVICE FOR BABY DIAPERS AND THE LIKE Alan Coatsworth, Mexico, M0.
Application August 27, 1956, Serial No. 606,295 1 Claim. (Cl. 68-233) This invention relates to a domestic appliance usable in the home and particularly in the bathroom for facilitating the carrying out of small washing operations, particularly .diapers, the primary object being to provide a laundry tub that is adaptable for positioning on and fitting into the seat of a toilet.
[It is the most important object of the present invention to provide a laundry device for baby diapers and the like that is in the nature of an open top tub having a support on the bottom thereof that normally holds the said bottom elevated above the bathroom floor and which support is also adapted for fitting into the toilet seat as aforementioned.
A further object of the instant invention is the provision of a laundry tub as above set forth having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof for draining the wash water therefrom into the toilet upon removal of a plug adapted to fit in the opening.
Other objects include the way in which the forwardmost wall of the tub is inclined and corrugated adapting the same for use as a washboard; the way in which a removable cover is provided for the open top of the tub; and other details of construction to be made clear as the following specification progresses.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a laundry device for baby diapers and the like showing the same operably positioned on a conventional toilet, parts being broken away for clearness.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, cross-sectional view through the laundry device; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, front elevational view taken on line IIIIII of Fig. 2, parts being broken away for clearness.
The laundry device forming the subject matter of the instant [invention is in the nature of an open top tub broadly designed by the numeral having a bottom 12, a front Wall 14, a rear wall 16, and a pair of side walls 18 and 20. Bottom wall 12 is provided with a primary portion 12a that slopes rearwardly and downwardly from the front wall 14 and a secondary section 12b that slopes downwardly and inwardly from the rear Wall 16. A drain opening 20 in the section 12a adjacent the section 12b is provided with a removable plug 22 attached to a chain or the like 24 that may be in tmn connected to the rear wall 16 adjacent the uppermost edge of the latter.
The bottom wall 12 is provided with a support 26 adapted to maintain the same in an elevated position when the tub 10 is resting on the floor of the bathroom, the support 26 being in the nature of a continuous boss conforming transversely thereof as best seen in Fig. 2 to the cross-sectional configuration of seat 28 of toilet 30.
In this respect it is noted that the continuous band-like seat 28 is normally provided with an oval, transverse, cross-sectional contour and accordingly, the support 26 is provided with a concavo-convex portion 32 that mates with the inner margin of the seat 28, thereby fitting the support 26 within the seat 28 and tending to prevent lateral displacement of the tub 10 with respect to the toilet 30 when the tub is in place on seat 28.
A continuous outturned, peripheral flange 34 at the uppermost edge of the walls 14, 16, 18 and 20, supports a cover 36 that is in turn provided with a continuous downwardly facing channel 38 that embraces the flange 34 when the cover 36 is placed on the tub 10. The uppermost face of the cover 36 may be fiat if desired, but for purposes of illustration, the same is provided with a downwardly depressed portion 40 presenting a tray.
Notable particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawing is the fact that the front wall 14 of the tub 10 slopes outwardly from the bottom wall 12 and as the flange 34 is approached. Additionally, the front wall 14 is provided with a plurality of transverse corrugations 14a, presenting a washboard.
In use, it is contemplated that the tub 10 will normally rest on the floor of the bathroom with the cover 36 in place. Soiled diapers will be placed therewithin from time to time until it is desired to wash the same. Thereupon, the tub 10 is lifted to the position shown in the drawing resting on the seat 28 and the cover 36 removed. Wash water may be poured into the tub 10, the diapers washed through use of the board presented by corrugations 14a and the wash water drained directly into the toilet 30 by removal of plug 22, it being noted that the drain opening 20 registers with the stool portion 30a of the toilet 30.
While the support 26 chosen for illustration is adapted to fit within the seat 28 of the toilet 30, it might well be adapted to fit within the stool portion 30a if desired. Still further, the use of legs or the like, difiering somewhat in shape and configuration from the support 26 shown in the drawing might well be utilized within the scope of the concepts of the instant invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
For use with a toilet having a bowl and a seat on the bowl consisting of a continuous band having an oval transverse cross-sectional contour, a laundry device comprising an open top tub provided with a bottom, said bottom having a drain opening formed therein, a front wall inclined upwardly and outwardly from said bottom and provided with a series of transverse, horizontal corrugations presenting a wash board; and a continuous, tubular support, rigid to the lowermost face of said bottom, said support including an outermost wall, an innermost wall and a bottom wall, said innermost and outermost Walls being secured to said bottom, said bottom wall being inclined downwardly toward said innermost wall and of concavo-convex configuration whereby the portion thereof adjacent said outermost wall mates with the innermost margin of said seat throughout the length of said margin, the other portion of said bottom Wall combining with said innermost wall to present a continuous arcuate, downwardly facing rim in normally surrounding relation to liquid emanating from said drain opening and adapted to hold the tub in an elevated position when said rim is resting on the floor.
