Description
1961 Q M. VERNON 2,996,775
PAPER CLIP AND PENCIL HOLDER Filed Nov. 19, 1958 IN V EN TOR. MURRAY VERNON AT TORNE Y United States Patent Patented Aug. 22, 1961 2,996,775 PAPER CLIP AND PENCIL HOLDER Murray Vernon, New York, N.Y., assignor to S. E. & M. en]1on, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New Filed Nov. '19, 1958, Ser. No. 774,964 4 Claims. (Cl. 24-66) This invention relates to a combined paper clip and pencil holder, and more particularly to an article of this kind which may be attached to the cover of a loose leaf binder or book in a convenient position thereon to thereby provide the user with a writing implement and with means for holding papers within the binder.
It is an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind which will be so positioned in the binder that it will not interefere with the holding of the pages by the binder, yet will enable supplemental loose sheets of paper to be safely held. It is a further object of the invention to provide a pencil holder by which a pencil, pen or other similarly shaped article can be held so that the user of the binder will also have the convenience of a pencil close at hand.
With these and other objects to be hereinafter set forth in view, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be described and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed,
FIG. 1 is a top plan View of a combined paper clip and pencil holder constructed according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is an end view of the same;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the fixed jaw or base member, with the pencil holder attached to it;
FIG. 5 is a plan view of the pencil holder before being attached to the fixed jaw of the clip, and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the movable jaw.
The combined paper clip and pencil holder is particularly adapted for attachment to the inside face of the cover of a binder or book although it may be otherwise used. In the drawing, 1 indicates the cover of a binder or book, and 2 indicates one of the edges of the same and preferably, but not necessarily the top or upper edge of the cover. The clip portion of the device in cludes a fixed jaw or base member generally indicated at 25, provided at its opposite ends with lugs 4 through which rivets 5 or other equivalent fastening devices are extended to attach the plate or fixed jaw permanently to the cover 1. At its lower end portion, the fixed jaw is formed with a longitudinally-extending raised rib 14. At its upper end portion the fixed jaw is provided with a projecting wall 21 formed with spaced rolled parts 6 constituting hinge sleeves.
The movable jaw of the clip is shown at 8, and the same is provided with a rear flange formed with the spaced rolled parts 9 constituting hinge sleeves. These sleeves fit between those shown at 6, and the two jaws are hingedly coupled together by means of a hinge pin 7 exending through the aligned sleeves 6 and 9. A torsional spring 13 encircles the hinge pin 7 and has its end 20 hearing against the wall 21 of the fixed jaw, and its opposite end 22 bearing against the flange 10 of the movable jaw 8. By means of this arrangement, the movable jaw 8 is biased toward the fixed jaw, with the inwardly bent flange 11 on the front end of the movable jaw normally maintained in contact with the rib 14. Thus, papers inserted between the flange 11 and the rib 14 will be firmly held and gripped, but readily removable by raising of the movable jaw. The raising of the movable jaw is readily done by engagement of the finger with a projecting lip 12 extending forwardly at the front of the movable jaw.
The pencil holder includes a sleeve portion 15, slightly flared at its opposite ends as shown in FIGS. 1 and 5, and as indicated at 23, to facilitate the insertion of a pencil 16 within it, and it also includes a flat plate portion 17 positioned behind the fixed jaw 25 and between the back of said jaw and the face of the book or binder cover 1. Extending from the end of the plate portion 17 is a pair of tongues 18 and which, in the assembled position of the pencil holder and clip, are inserted through apertures 19 formed in the fixed jaw, and are then bent over the outer face of the fixed jaw, as clearly seen in FIGS. 3 and 4. This arrangement is such that the pencil holder is firmly attached to the clip through the tongues 18, extending through the apertures 19 and being folded down on the fold lines 24, and also by the pencil holder being confined between the back of the fixed jaw and the face of the cover of the book or binder.
From the foregoing, the construction and use of the improved paper clip and pencil holder will be readily apparent. By raising the movable jaw 8 by engagement of the finger with the lip 12, papers may be easily inserted between the flange 11 and the raised rib l4 and will be firmly gripped between these parts because of the spring pressure exerted by the spring 13. The pencil 16 when inserted through the sleeve 15 will be firmly gripped and held thereby due to the shape of the sleeve, yet can be readily removed for use whenever required, and without disturbing the papers held by the clip.
While I have herein suggested that the combined paper clip and pencil holder be attached to a binder cover, and at a certain position thereon, it will be apparent that it might be otherwise used without departing from he spirit of the invention.
Having thus described a single embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
'1. A combination paper and pencil holder comprising a planar support, an elongated fixed jaw including a portion juxtaposed on said planar support and secured in juxtaposition thereon, said fixed jaw including a marginal rib at one edge juxtaposed on and projecting out of the plane of said support, said fixed jaw including a wall portion parallel to and spaced from said rib and projecting out of the plane of said planar support beyond said rib portion, said wall portion including longtudinally spaced hinge sleeves, said fixed jaw portion including aperture means spaced from said rib, a pencil holder comprising a flat plate portion juxtaposed between said planar support and said fixed jaw portion and including a tongue portion reversely bent through said aperture means, and in integral, reverse-bend open-ended sleeve extending from said pencil holder flat plate portion and projecting out of the plane of said planar support and spaced from and parallel to said fixed jaw hinge sleeves, a movable jaw comprising a flange portion disposed above said fixed jaw portion and including longitudinally spaced hinge sleeves in axial alignment with said hinge sleeves of said fixed jaw, said movable jaw including a marginal depending flange portion spaced from the hinge sleeves thereof and normally engaged on the rib of said fixed jaw, said movable jaw including a lip portion projecting angularly from said depending flange and disposed above the planar support, hinge pin means extending through said axially aligned hinge sleeves, and spring means on said hinge pin means and engaged with said fixed and movable jaw and biasing said depending flange into engagement with said rib.
2. The structure of claim 1; said pencil holder reversebend sleeve including an outwardly flared portion at least at one end.
3. The structure of claim 1; said spring means comprising a torsion spring convoluted about an intermediate portion of said hinge pin means.
4. The structure of claim 1; said lip portion being disposed intermediately of said movable jaw.
