BYM
United States Patent YIELDABLE BLADE SAFETY RAZOR William M. Mercer, Houston, Tex.
Application December 3, 1956, Serial No. 626,023
1 Claim. (Cl. 30-61) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a yieldable blade safety razor.
It is an object of this invention to provide a safety razor having means for yieldably holding a straight edge blade in position, employing a yieldable block between the plate and holder, and having a means for adjusting the block with relation to the blade.
It is another object of this invention to provide a yieldable means for holding a razor blade having a block of resilient material against which the blade abuts, which may be readily removed and replaced.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts more particularly defined in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view and Figure 2 is a front elevational view, in section, taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a razor housing having a handle 2 and a hinged cover 3. The upper portion of the housing 1 is shaped to form a chamber 11, in which a block of resilient material 4; such as foam rubber or the like, may be mounted.
A plate 5 is loosely mounted in the chamber 11 and embraces the block 4. A threaded shaft 6 is fixedly mounted to the plate 5 and is provided with external threads 7 at the upper end thereof, said upper end extending through the block 4 and through the port 9 in the housing 1, and a knurled nut 8 is screwed on to the threaded end of the shaft 6.
2,893,120 Patented July 7, 1959 In use, a blade, as 10, is mounted in the housing 1 and the cover 3 closed, clamping the blade in place. The upper end of the blade abuts against the plate 5, and when the razor is in use, the plate 5 may be lowered or raised to decrease or increase the degree of resistance to the upward movement of the plate 10'.
While the foregoing is considered a preferred form of the invention, it is by way of illustration only, the broad principle of the invention being defined by the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a razor, a blade housing, the upper end of said housing having a chamber, said chamber having a port extending through the upper end wall thereof, a vertically movable plate in said chamber having a projection extending upwardly through said port, the upper end of said projection being externally threaded and a nut on said threaded end of said projection bearing against the outer surface of said housing for adjusting the limitation of downward movement of said plate in said chamber, a block of resilient material in said chamber between said plate and the upper inside wall of said chamber, said block having a port therethrough in alignment with the port in said chamber and through which the said projection extends permitting upward movement of said plate upon application of sufiicient pressure by the blunt edge of a razor blade to be mounted in said housing to cause the resilient material to yield and to permit the resilient material to return the blade to starting position upon release of pressure against said plate.
