PAPER ARTICLE OF HEAD WEAR Filed Feb. 15, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR m llz'am J Long ATTORNEY United States Patent PAPER ARTICLE OF HEAD WEAR William J. Long, Delaware, Ohio, assignor to White Castle System, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, a corporation of Delaware Application February 15, 1952, Serial No. 271,789
2 Claims. (Cl. 2-200) This invention relates to articles of head wear particularly articles adapted for feminine use and by those engaged in various occupations, such as waitresses, nurses, housemaids and others.
It is an object of the invention to provide an article of head wear for the general purposes stated, in which the article is formed entirely, insofar as the body thereof is concerned, from paper or other relatively inexpensive material, whereby following certain periods of use of the article, the same may be economically discarded and a new article substituted therefor, thus avoiding laundering or other renovation of the article.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paper article of head wear which may be compactly folded in a substantially flattened condition for space-saving purposes during storage and shipment thereof, the construction of the article being such that it may be readily unfolded and expanded at the time the same is placed for use on the head of a wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide such an article of head wear which, upon being opened or expanded for application to the head of the wearer, will present one or more upstanding panels, the latter imparting to the article an attractive appearance and providing a means upon which indicia of various kinds may be printed or otherwise applied.
Paper articles of headgear have been used for masculine wear for many years, but the same have not been generally adapted for wear by women. This condition is undoubtedly attributable to the fact that chefs caps and the like, made of paper and adapted for wear by men, are not shaped for ready adaptation to the hair dress of women and, moreover, are unsightly and unbecoming if worn. It is desirable, however, in many industrial occupations, particularly those in which food stuffs are packed, or otherwise processed, that women operatives should have their hair securely held and prevented from falling and thereby becoming caught in the food stufis. The cap or headgear of the present invention provides a satisfactory solution for this problem, in that it provides a low-cost item, which, when actively extended and applied to the head of a wearer, serves effectively to confine the hair and prevent or minimize accidental falling thereof into goods or products undergoing processing and, in addition, provides an article of attractive design which heightens the appearance of the wearer.
For a further understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a paper blank or sheet from which my improved article of head wear may be formed;
Fig. 2 is a plan view disclosing the article when in a folded, flat state suitable for storage or shipment;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view disclosing the article of head wear in its opened or extended position, as when applied to the head of a wearer;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the article when the same is viewed from the rear and one side thereof;
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken through the article on the plane indicated by the line 66 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan view showing a modified form of the blank appearing in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and especially to the form of my invention disclosed in Figs. 1 through 6, my improved article of head wear is die cut, or otherwise formed, from a single blank or sheet of pliable material, such as paper, paperboard, synthetic resins or the like, producing a flexible body. The body is formed to provide a head-embracing crown panel 1 having scalloped rearwardly disposed edges 2, the panel 1 including in its formation wing extensions shown at 3, the latter being positioned to engage the sides of the wearers head, while the main body part of the panel 1 extends transversely across the top of the head, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
The blank of material from which the article is formed is either cut through, as shown in Fig. 1, or scored, as shown in Fig. 7, so that the crown panel is provided with angularly and forwardly converging margins 4 disposed contiguous to and in parallel relationship with the inner side edges of a pair of upwardly folded side panels 5. The outer or upper edges of these side panels are ornamentally curved as at 6, and, forwardly thereof, are joined by means of the scored or weakened lines 7 with triangular corner panels 8. Likewise the crown panel 1 is provided with a forwardly disposed weakened or scored line 9 which flexibly joins the crown panel 1 with an upwardly folded indicia panel 10, the latter, also, being flexibly connected with the corner panels 8 by the scored or weakened lines indicated at 11.
When the article is folded, the same may be applied on the head of a wearer to occupy substantially the position of application illustrated in Fig. 3. In holding the article in position, it is advantageous to provide the lower ends of the wing extensions 3 and the side panels 5 with reinforcing grommets or eyelets 12, the latter being joined with the ends of an elastic band 12a. It will be noted that, as a result of this construction of the article, and the manner in which it is folded, when the same is opened and caused to assume its operative position of use, as shown in Fig. 5, the indicia panel 19 will assume and maintain, under forces applied thereto by the manual manipulation of the side panels 5, an erect or upright position. This position results from pull on the side panels which is imparted to the triangular corner panels and to the indicia panel, enabling the upstanding indicia panel to impart to the article a distinctive appearance and at the same time permit any legend or printed matter appearing thereon to be clearly viewed by those observing the front of the article. The latter may be made, as previously stated, from paper or the like, and stamped out by automatically operating machines, so that the cost of the article is held to such a comparatively low figure that said article may be discarded after a given period of usage. This may be done economically as the cost of the article is usually less than that necessitated to launder a more permanent and longer lasting fabric article.
From a consideration of this form of my improved article of headdress, it will be seen that the same is formed from a single sheet of paper, or the like, so cut or blanked that, when the article is applied to the head, an indicia-containing panel of attractive appearance will be caused to assume an elevated or exposed position. When in such position, not only does the panel improve the general appearance of the article but, in addition, enables any printed matter or the like appearing thereon to be readily observed. When the articles are undergoing storage or shipment, the same may be folded to assume a flat condition which provides maximum compactness and almost a total absence of wasted or unused space.
