Description
E. HOLT BRASSIERE s'e i', 25, 1956 Filed April 4, 1955 labvm if l INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent BRASSIERE Ethel Holt, Dallas, Tex.
Application April 4, 1955, Serial No. 498,935
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-42) This invention relates to useful improvements and certain features of construction in brassieres.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a brassiere in which a shoulder strap forms an integral part of each of the pockets, which produces a decided strengthening of the lift particularly in heavy breasts, reduces the tendency to slip off the shoulder and avoids cutting, ridging or marking of the shoulder flesh.
Another object of the invention is to insure maintenance of the shape of the brassiere and increase its comfort by cutting out the garment entirely on the straight of the material.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a brassiere which gives the busts of the wearer a more natural look and greater comfort by forming the pocket portions with radial darts converging to the center of each pocket portion.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a four-piece brassiere which molds to the body and does not Wrinkle or roll up under the bust.
It is also the purpose of the invention to afford a convenient medium for alteration of the pocket or underarm portions of the brassiere by shaping the side and back portions upwardly toward the points where these portions are joined to the pocket portions.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends said invention then consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of one of the pockets and integral shoulder strap of a brassiere embodying the present invention, in extended position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the matching pocket and integral shoulder strap.
Figure 3 is a view of the section which connects the two matching pockets of the brassieres.
Figures 4 and 5 show matching side-back sections of the garment, and
Figure 6 is a view of the brassiere modeled to the body.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention includes two identical blanks defining matching pockets generally indicated by reference numerals 10 and 11, having integral shoulder straps 12 and 13, respectively. The blanks forming the pockets and straps are of identical contour and are formed by cutting the blank defining each matching shoulder strap and pocket entirely on the straight of the material. The darts or tucks 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Figures 1 and 2 converge to sharp points in the approximate center of the blanks 10 and 11 and the pairs of lines 1', 2', 3 and 4 radiating from the center of blank 10, when brought together and sewed, form the darts 1, 2, 3 and 4 which, in turn form the pocket 10. In like manner the darts 5, 6, 7 and 8 of blank 11 are formed by drawing the material together and sewing along the pairs of radiating lines 5', 6', 7 and 8. The pockets so formed receive and properly shape and support the busts in such manner as to present a natural appear ance.
The center-front section 14, Figure 3, is secured to the two pockets 10 and 11 along corresponding lines a, a and b, b after the darts or tucks 3 and 5 have been formed. Likewise, the two side-back sections 15 and 16, Figures 5 and 4, respectively, are sewed along corresponding lines 0, c and d, d to portions 17 and 18 identified as the sidefront portions of the pockets it) and 11, respectively, thus to form the complete brassiere of unusual shape and perfect mold as shown in Figure 6. The dotted lines adjacent the margins of the blanks 10 and 11, the straps 12 and 13, the center-front section 14 and the side-back sections 15 and 16 indicate stitching of the hems.
By virtue of the particular shape of the side-back sections 15 and 16 and the manner in which these sections are cut to conform with the V-shaped recesses formed by the angles of the lines 0, c and d, d, alteration of the underarm portions and pockets of the brassiere are made easy.
Shown herein and described is a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it should be understood that there is no intent to confine the invention to the precise detailed construction herein set out and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A brassiere comprising a pair of pocket sections, each consisting of a blank of irregular contour and having darts therein formed by radial seams converging and meeting at the approximate center of the blank to form a substantially cone shaped pocket, said darts forming on opposite sides of said pocket a substantially V-shaped recess, a shoulder strap forming an integral part of each of said pockets at the tops thereof, a center section having opposing, substantially V-shaped edges joined to the confronting and correspondingly shaped edges of said pockets and a pair of side-back sections, each having an end conformably secured to each pocket in the V-shaped recess therein opposite said center section.
