- An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable members, the inner member of said rotatable members having a portion thereof projecting from one end of the outer member of said rotatable members and having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside of the projecting portion, and a walled member for rotating said inner member and mounted on said projecting portion in frictional engage- :nent with said ridge, said ridge normally lying in the path of movement of said walled member and resisting the movement thereof whereby assuring conjoint rotation of said inner member and said walled member.
- An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinally within the inner sleeve in response to relative rotation of said sleeves for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeves, said inner sleeve having a portion thereof extending longitudinally past the other end of the outer sleeve, means for retaining said outer sleeve in position on said inner sleeve, said means including a clamping element engaging a limited axial portion of said extending portion of said inner sleeve, thereby permitting the use of said extending portion as a handle for rotating said inner sleeve without danger of said outer sleeve moving longitudinally out of position relative to said inner sleeve.

(Cl. 132-79) This invention relates broadly to receptacles,.and more particularly .to a receptacle designed to closelyunite various articles, forexample a 4mechanical eyebrow pencil, a lipstick, a lipstick brush, a bottle for perfume or other liquid, pills or the like, and to tubular assemblies having improved means Vfor coupling tubular members.- This application .is a .continuation-impart of my application Serial No. 735,744,.fled .March l9, .1947, now issued as Patent No. 2,458,063, January 4, 41949.
It is the general object lof my .invention to provide a light, convenient, attractive and compact unitary receptacle, whose outward appearance, shape, form and size substantially 4correspond to those of a fountain-pen, for housing a plurality Aof cosmetic or other articles, such articles being retained within the receptacle in such a manner as to be protectively carried therewithin when not in use and, at the same time, being lreadily `accessible and expos'able for use when and asfrequired.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an ensemble of the character indicated, comprising a plurality of separate elements related in use, designed and constructed in such a manner as to readily facilitate selective disposition of a particular element or elements in operative position for application.
lt is, also, anobject of the invention to provide a cosmetic or vanity ensemble having an attractive, single cylindrical cover or-outer casing serving not only to house the articles contained therein, but functioning additionally as a convenient handle in cosmetic application and as a stop means for preventing the advancement of the articles, inadvertently, when not in use. It also serves as an integral part of an elongated cover cap.
An additional yobject of the invention is the provision of a device of the character -indicated wherein the cosmetic pencil sub-assembly or assemblies, such as lipstick andeyebrow stick, are provided `with improved means for ejecting the consumed cosmetic sticks in a clean and convenient mannerfand wherein fresh sticks may be readily replaced.

Referring mow to .the drawings in detail, the device comprises ,a preferably unitary, Acylindrical -outer cover or casing 1t) made of flexible, thin gauge metal, plastic or any other desired material, for housing various articles. It willbe understood that the other component elements of the device may also be made out ofthe afore-mentioned material. .It will vbe understood that the articles retained within casing 10 are not `to be restricted to the cosmetic articles illustrated `in the drawings, but may be in the form of `medicated sticks, pencils and lother medicated or 'non-medicated articles; art materials and supplies such as brushes, paints, pencils and erasers; drugs in the form of liquids, pills and lozenges; or small tools and accessories and the like.
lnthe illustrated preferred embodiment of the invention elongated `outer casing 10 retains `frictionally and telescopically therewithin at one end thereof a holder assembly -11 including a lipstick holder preferably of the conventional propel-.repeltype or other suitable construction. Said lipstick holder comprises an inner cylinder or sleeve 12 having a longitudinal slot 13 for the reception of the laterally projecting pin 14 of the 'lipstick carrier or cup 15. A-.hollow .cylindrical 'walled memberor adapter 16, having the reduced'walled base portion 16a, is flxedly secured tothe base of inner cylinder 12, as by means of a press-fit engagement, so that said cylindrical walled member and said inner cylinder will frotate in unison, as a unit or single cylindrical element. At the junction 'of the relatively Wider and longitudinally extending cylindrical vwall portion 1611 of member 16 and the reduced cylindrical wall portion 16C of member 16 there is a flange portion 16d which provides a shoulder to limit the longitudinal movement in `one direction of an outer cover 17 enclosing andfrictionally engaging a cylindrical sleeve 18.
.Cylindrical .sleeve .13 .is provided -with a .helical-slot 19 and .surrounds Vthe .longitudinally .slotted portion =of inner cylinder 12. Pin 14 of carrier or cup 15 is retained -within the longitudinal slot 13 .of inner cylinder 12 and the helical slot 19 of sleeve '18 so -that upon -relative .rotation of outer cover 17 and .inner'cylinder 12, 4the 4lipstick carrier 15 may be moved longitudinally to project lipstick from one of the openends of said cover .-17 provided therefor. Inner cylinder 12 `is .provided adjacent its mouth or open end with anannularbead .20 which serves to retain `sleeve 18.
As clearly 'shown in Fig. 2, `.the outer surface .of outer cover 17 is preferablyl flush with the .outer surface of member 16, `so that the holderassembly 11 .may be readily inserted and frictionally held within outer casing 10. Member 16 is preferably provided with one or more eccentric off-'center hollow projections '2d for lirm engagement within casing 10 and to prevent the advancement of the vcarrier while so engaged. Said one or more projections being formed to effectively resist being depressed flush with the outer surface of said cylindrical fwalled member 16 so asto permanently'extend-outwardly therefrom.
Connector member .22 .is provided with stop means limiting the extent of .insertion of holder assembly 11 within casing 1l). This stop Ameans preferably takes the form of an integral annular bead 25 yformed on said connector intermediate its ends.
As shown in Fig. '2, .the other end of casing 10 telescopically houses therewithin a unitary assembly 26 comprising, in the illustrated embodiment, a lipstick brush 27 or the like and an article holder for an eyebrow pencil P or other cosmetic or medicated stick, said article holder being similar in operation to the above-described lipstick holder in assembly 11, but 'characterized by a novel ejection arrangement to 'be described hereinafter., v
Assembly '26 comprises an .inner cylinder lor 'sleeve "23 having a longitudinal 'slot 29 for 'the `reception 'of 'the laterally projecting pin or protrusion 30 of a carrier or cup 31. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, said carrier or cup 31 has a reduced neck portion 32 having diametrlcally opposed slots 33 which are preferably narrower at thelr open ends. Neck portion 32 slidably retains an ejectlon disc 34, having a pair of diametrically opposed lugs 3 5 having enlarged heads, said lugs being retained withm the slots 33. Ejection disc 34 may be elevated or raised by means of said laterally projecting lugs 35 to remove the end or remains of the eyebrow pencil, cosmetic stick, or the like retained within neck portion 32 of carrier cup 31 in a clean, rapid and efficient manner when it is desired to insert a new stick or pencil. The natural resilience of the carrier 31 cooperates with the relatively narrow top-end width of slots 33 to normally retain disc 34 at the bottom of neck portion 32, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
The end of inner cylinder 28 adjacent brush 27 is preferably provided with a plurality of longitudinal ridges or splines 36 to be firmly engaged with the mounting ring 37 of a walled end member or tip 38. Said tip 38 preferably tapers or angles forward gradually to form a narrow aperture through which the brush bristles 27 protrude. The brush bristles may be mounted in any desired manner, either directly at one end of inner cylinder 28 or on a ferrule or holder 28a snugly removably fitted into said inner cylinder 28. As shown in Fig. 2, said inner cylinder 28 is formed intermediate the ends thereof with a plurality of integral inward and radially yieldable dimples or indentations 28b to prevent brush bristles holder 28a from moving too far back into said cylinder 28 and to restrain the longitudinal movement of the carrier 31. A cylindrical sleeve 39 having a helical slot 40 surrounds the longitudinally slotted portion of inner cylinder 28, the pin 30 of carrier cup 31 being` retained within both said helical slot of said cylindrical sleeve and the longitudinal slot 29 of said inner cylinder. Clamping rings 41 may be secured about inner cylinder 28 at both ends of sleeve 39 in order to retain said sleeve in proper position.
An outer tubular cover member 42 is provided with an aperture 43 for projection of the eyebrow pencil P, cosmetic stick, or other article retained within carrier cup 31. Within cover member 42 is an adapter member 44 having a longitudinally extending portion 44a in concentrically spaced relation to an opposed portion of cylindrical sleeve 39 and frictionally secured to cover member 42, as by press-fit engagement, and a conic portion 441; joining said portion 44a to a relatively narrow cylindrical longitudinally extending portion 45 encompassing and frictionally engaging an opposed outer surface portion of sleeve 39. Thus, it will be seen that the rotation of tiD 38 relative to outer cover member 42 will be accompanied by the rotation of inner cylinder 28 relative to sleeve 39, thereby advancing or retracting carrier cup 31 and the eyebrow pencil P or other article supported therein. Tt will be noted upon placement of said cover member 42 on portion 44a of adapter member 44 that the conic portion 44h and portion 44a are compressed to assure firm engagement between cover member 42 and adapter member 44. Tubular portion 45a of said cover member 42 preferably overlaps tip 38 as shown in Fig. 2 in order to prevent inadvertent rotation of said tip when assembly 26 is supported within outer casing 10.
The radial distance from the center of the assemblies to the outer surface of their projections or ridges is substantially equal to or slightly greater than the radius of the inside of the cap member 48 and cover 10, so as to positively and frictionally engage the opposed surface portions. It will be apparent upon placement of cap member 48 and cover 10 on said projections that they provide firm resistance to the longitudinal movement of said cap member 48 and cover 10, thereby increasing the friction between opposed surface portions. Furthermore, it will be apparent when said cap member 48 and cover 10 are made out of liexible metallic material that they are held against rotation relative to the projections because of an inward distortion of the flexible material that occurs simultaneously with a yielding of the flexible material to permit the placement of the cap or cover on the projections.
As shown in Figs. l and 3, a small nail file 49 may be hingedly secured at 50 to cap member 48 or attached thereto in any other preferred manner, so that said nail file may be swung to any desired angular position with respect to said cap member. Nail file 49 may be provided with abraded surfaces on one or both sides thereof.
When it is desired, assembly 26, when the end cap 48 is removed therefrom, may be removed from casing 10, reversed, and remounted in casing 10, whereupon the article carrier 31 may be moved longitudinally within casing 10 upon relative rotation of the projecting walled end member 38 and casing 10.
When it is desired, assembly 11, upon removal of connector 22 and cap 23 therefrom, may be reversibly mounted in casing 10 so that casing 1l) may function as an elongated handle for rotating inner sleeve 12 relative to cover 17 to move carrier 1S outside said casing 10.
It will also be apparent that casing 10 in association with cap 23 provides an elongated cover cap for assembly 26, and when in association with cap 48 provides an elongated cover cap for assembly 11, and provides a means for holding the device while presenting the articles at the opposite ends thereof for use.
As has been previously pointed out, the device of the present invention is adapted for various ensemble combinations in addition to the cosmetic articles illustrated in the preferred embodiment, such as medicated and nonmedicated materials, art materials and supplies, drugs and pills, small tools and the like.
Since certain additional modifications may be made in the device of the present invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing specification and shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. In a holder, a cover open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said cover for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said cover upon movement of said carrier in one direction, means rotatable relative to said cover and operatively connected to said carrier for imparting movement thereto, said means including a walled portion projecting from the other end of said cover, and a removable cover cap for covering said one end of said cover, said cover cap enclosing said cover in slidable contact therewith and having an inner surface portion thereof in frictional engagement with an opposed outer surface portion of said walled portion, said frictional engagement holding said cover and said walled portion against relative rotation, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrler.

In a holder, a cover open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said cover for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said cover upon movement of said carrier in one direction, means rotatable relative to said cover and operatively connected to said carrier for imparting movement thereto, said means including a walled portion projecting from the other end of said cover, and a removable cover cap for covering said one end of said cover, said cover cap enclosing said cover in slidable contact therewith and having an inner surface portion thereof extending past said other end of said cover, and a friction bump on said walled portion normally disposed in the path of movement of said cover cap for resisting the .movement of said cover cap being frictionally engaged with an opposed inner surface portion of said cover cap to hold said cover cap against rotation relative thereto, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.
3. In a holder, a cover open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said cover for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said cover upon movement of said carrier in one direction, means rotatable relative to said cover and operatively connected to said carrier for imparting movement thereto, said means including a walled portion projecting from the other end of said cover, the outer diameter of said cover being at least as great as that of said walled portion, and a removable cover cap for said one end of said cover, said cover cap enclosing said cover in slidable contact therewith and having an inner surface portion thereof extending past said other end of said cover, said Walled portion being provided with at least one radially and permanently outwardly extending projection normally disposed in the path of movement of said cover cap for engaging said cover cap to hold the same against rotation relative to said walled portion, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.
4. In a holder, two members connected for relative rotation, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement relative to said members in response to said relative rotation, a cover cap removably mounted on said members, said cover cap and members being frictionally engaged so as to hold said cover cap against rotation on said members, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.
5. ln a holder, two members connected .for relative rotation, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement relative to said members in response to said relative rotation, one of said members having an open end for projection of the article normally carried by said carrier, a cover cap for covering said open end of the said one member and having a metallic wall of a length to Vfrictionally engage an outer surface portion of the other of said members, said other member being provided with at least one permanently outwardly extending hollow projection on the outside thereof and normally disposed in the `path of movement of said cover cap to resist the movement thereof, and upon placement of said cover cap on said members, between said cover cap and said other member, one being yieldable with respect to the other to permit the mounting of said cover 'cap on said projection and the holding of said cover cap against movement relative to said other member, whereby the holder is safeguarded against movement accidentally of said carrier.
6. ln a holder, two members connected for relative rotation, an article carrier arranged for 'longitudinal movement relative to said members in response to said relative rotation, one of said members having an open end for projection of the article normally carried by said carrier, a cover cap for covering said open end of said one member and of a length to frictionally engage an outer surface portion of the other of said members, said other member being provided with at least one permanently outwardly extending hollow projection disposed in the path of movement of said ycover cap and providing resistance to the movement thereof, and upon placement of said cover cap on said members, said proiection distorting said cover cap to permit the mounting of said cover cap on said projection and the holding of said cover cap against longitudinal and rotary movement relative to said other member, whereby to holder vis safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.

In a holder, a cover open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said cover for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said cover upon movement of said carrier in'one direction, means rotatable relative to said cover and yoperatively connected to .said vcarrier .for :imparting movement thereto, said means including a. walled portion projecting from the other end of said cover, and a removable cover cap for covering said one end of said cover, said cover cap having a ilexible metal wall and enclosing said cover and having an inner surface portion thereof extending past said other end of said cover, said walled portion being provided with at least one permanently outwardly extending projection for frictionally engaging the extending inner surface portion of said cover cap, said projection normally lying in the path of movement of said cover cap and resisting the movement thereof, and upon placement of said cover cap on said projection said projection distorting said exible metal wall and holding said cover cap against rotation on said walled portion, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.
8. An article holder comprising a pair of longitudinally related and relatively rotatable elements, a cover cap of a length to cover one of said elements and `to extend past the parting line between said elements, the other of said elements having at least one elongated and longitudinally extending rib on the outside thereof for frictionally engaging the inner surface of said cover cap, said rib normally lying in the path of movement lof said cover cap and resisting the movement thereof whereby the article holder is assured of frictional engagement between said cover cap and said other element upon the mounting of said cover cap on said rib.
9. An article holder as in claim 8 wherein a plurality of elongated ribs are circumferentially spaced .about said other element so as to vhold said cover cap in spaced relation to the said one of said elements.

In a holder, an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member rotatable `relative to each other, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal .movement relative to .said tubular members in y.response to relative rotation of said tubular members for carrying anarticle adapted to project from one end of said outer ,tubular member, said inner tubular member having an .integral portion thereof projecting radially outside the other end of said outer tubular member, a cover cap for said one end of said outer tubular member and having an inner surface portion thereof mounted on the projecting portion of ysaid inner tubular member, said projecting portion normally being disposed i-n the path of movement of said cover cap and resisting the movement of said' cover cap Ato assure frictional engagement between said cover cap and `said projecting portion and permit a1 slight distortion of said cover cap for holding said cover cap against longitudinal and rotary 'movement relative to ysaid inner tubular member, whereby the holder is safeguarded against accidental movement of said carrier.

In a holder assembly, two longitudinally related tubular members, each of said tubular members being capacitated to hold material therein, said tubular mentbers being connected at their adjacent ends and open at their remote ends, one member of said tubular members having an outer surface portion thereof projecting outwardly beyond the outer surface of the other member of said tubular members, a removable elongated cover cap covering the open end of said other member and frictionally engaging the projecting outer surface portion of said one member whereby said cover cap is maintained in protective position about said open end of said other member.
l5. ln a holder, a sleeve open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said sleeve for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeve upon movement of said carrier in one direction, means rotatable relative to said sleeve and operatively connected to said carrier for irnparting movement thereto, said means including a walled portion exposed outside the other end of said sleeve, a removable cover cap covering said one end of said sleeve and engaging an outer surface portion of said walled portion to hold said rotatable means against rotation relative to said sleeve, said walled portion being reversibly insertable in said covercap and engageable with an opposed inner surface portion of said cover cap to hold said cover cap against rotation relative thereto, thereby permitting the use of said cover cap as an operating handle for rotating said rotatable means.
16. ln a holder, a pair of co-axially arranged relatively rotatable elements, one of said elements including a portion mounted in the other of said elements and a relatively wider portion exposed outside one end of said other element, an article carrier within said mounted portion arranged for longitudinal movement in response to relative rotation of said elements for carrying an article adapted to project from the end of said one element that is adjacent to the other end of said other element, a removable cover cap for said adjacent end, said cover cap covering said other element and having an inner surface portion thereof frictionally engaging an outer surface portion of said wider portion of said one element to safeguard the holder against accidental relative rotation between said elements, and said wider portion being reversibly mountable in said cover cap to permit the use of said cover cap as an operating handle for rotating said one element.
17. In a holder, an outer cover open at the opposite ends thereof, `an article carrier movable longitudinally within said outer cover for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said outer cover upon movement of said carrier in one direction, means rotatable relative to said outer cover and operatively connected to` said carrier for imparting movement thereto, said rotatable means including a portion projecting from the other end of said outer cover, a removable cover cap covering said one end of said outer cover, said projecting portion being telescopically and frictionally engageable within said cover cap, and upon said cover cap being removed from said one end of said outer sleeve, reversed, and mounted on said projecting portion, said cover cap providing an operating handle for rotating said rotatable means.
18. ln a device of the character described, an elongated cover, a holderV assembly mounted within the respective ends of said elongated cover, each of the assemblies comprising a pair of relatively rotatable members and an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement rela- -tive to said members in response to relative rotation of said members, and one of said members in each of the holder assemblies having an outer surface portion thereof extending beyond the `outer surface -of' the member paired therewith and frictionally engaging an opposed surface portion of said elongated cover, said elongated cover thereby simultaneously safeguarding both of said holder assemblies against accidental longitudinal movement of the article carriers, and each of said holder assemblies being reversibly mountable within the respective ends of said elongated cover.
19. An article holder comprising a pair of longitudinally related and relatively rotatable elements, one of said elements having a raised member intermediate the opposite ends thereof and formed with opposite longitudinally extending tubular portions, each of said tubular portions having at least one permanently outwardly extending projection on the outside thereof, a cover cap for selectively enclosing said tubular portions, said projection on each of said tubular portions being normally disposed in the path of movement of said cover cap and resisting the movement thereof to assure frictional engagement between said cover cap and the said one of said elements upon placement of said cover cap on the respective tubular portions.
20. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable members, the inner member of said rotatable members having a portion thereof projecting from one end of the outer member of said rotatable members and having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside of the projecting portion, and a walled member for rotating said inner member and mounted on said projecting portion in frictional engage- :nent with said ridge, said ridge normally lying in the path of movement of said walled member and resisting the movement thereof whereby assuring conjoint rotation of said inner member and said walled member.

An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinally within the inner sleeve in response to relative rotation of said sleeves for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeves, said inner sleeve having a portion thereof extending longitudinally past the other end of the outer sleeve, means for retaining said outer sleeve in position on said inner sleeve, said means including a clamping element engaging a limited axial portion of said extending portion of said inner sleeve, thereby permitting the use of said extending portion as a handle for rotating said inner sleeve without danger of said outer sleeve moving longitudinally out of position relative to said inner sleeve.
22. An article holder assembly comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinally within the inner sleeve in response to relative rotation of said sleeves for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeves, said inner sleeve having a portion thereof extending longitudinally past the other end of the outer sleeve, said inner sleeve being adapted to receive an article therein introduced at the extending portion thereof and being formed with an inwardly extending projection intermediate the ends thereof for limiting the longitudinal movement of the last-mentioned article within said inner sleeve.
23. A holder assembly comprising co-axially arranged tubular elements, the inner tubular element having a relatively wider tubular portion extending longitudinally outside one end of the outer tubular element, said wider tubular portion being arranged end to end with said outer tubular element for determining the axial disposition of said outer tubular element relative to said inner tubular element, said outer tubular element being longitudinally movable toward and away from said wide tubular portion, said wider tubular portion being capacitated to contain material and having an opening to receive the material, and removable means covering the opening in said wider tubular portion, said inner tubular element being capacitated to contain an article within the tubular portion thereof within said outer tubular element.
24. In a holder assembly, a sleeve open at the opposite ends thereof, a tubular element rotatable relative to said sleeve, said tubular element including a tubular portion mounted in said sleeve and a relatively wider tubular portion exposed outside one end of said sleeve, a removable cover enclosing said sleeve, said wider tubular portion and said cover being arranged end to end to limit the longitudinal movement of said cover in one direction, said wider tubular portion being capacitated to contain material and being provided with an opening to receive the material, and an article carrier Within the tubu- 9 lar portion of said tubular element mounted in said sleeve and arranged for longitudinal movement in response to rotation of said '.'ubiilar element relative to said sleeve.
25. In a holder assembly, a sleeve open at the opposite ends thereof, a tubular element rotatable relative to said sleeve, said tubular element including a tubular portion mounted in said sleeve and a relatively wider tubular portion extending longitudinally outside one end of said sleeve to constitute part of the outer surface of the holder assembly, an article carrier within the tubular portion of said tubular element mounted in said sleeve and arranged for longitudinal movement in response to rotation of said tubular element relative to said sleeve, said wider tubular portion being open at its free outward end and capacitated to house material, and a removable end cap connected to said wider tubular portion to constitute part of the outer surface of the holder assembly.
26. A holder assembly as in claim wherein a connector is disposed between said removable end cap and said wider tubular portion, said connector at one end engaging the inner wall of said wider tubular portion and -at the other end engaging said removable end cap.
27. In a holder assembly, a sleeve open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within said sleeve, a hollow walled member'at one end of said `sleeve and rotatable relative thereto, means connecting said sleeve, walled member and carrier for moving said carrier in response to rotation of said walled member relative to said sleeve, said walled member being capacitated to house material and having an opening to receive the material, said walled member constituting part of the outer surface of the holder assembly, and a removable end cap for said opening of said walled member, said end cap being connected to said walled member for conjoint rotation relative to said sleeve and constituting part of the outer surface of the holder assembly.
`28. A holder assembly comprising a pair of concentric rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinally within theinner Isleeve in response to relative rotation of said sleeves for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeves, said inner sleeve having a portion thereof extending longitudinally past the other end of the outer sleeve, said extending portion providing handle means for rotating said inner sleeve, and an applica-tor for the aforementioned article removably fitted in said extending portion.
'29. In a holder, a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an adapter member about the outer sleeve and comprising one longitudinal end portion frictionally engaging an opposed outer surface portion of the outer sleeve and a second longitudinal end portion in concentrically spaced relation to said outer sleeve throughout the length thereof, said second longitudinal end portion being radially compressible, and a cover concentrically related to said sleeves and having a press-fit relation with said second longitudinal end portion whereby said second longitudinal end portion is radially compressed as said cover is moved longitudinally with respect to said adapter member for engagement therewith.
30. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement relative to said sleeves, means connecting said carrier and said sleeves for moving said carrier in response to relative rotation of said sleeves, an adapter member about the outer sleeve and including a lirst longitudinal end portion frictionally engaging said outer sleeve for conjoint rotary movement and a second longitudinal end portion concentrically spaced throughout the length thereof from said outer sleeve, and a tubular member enclosing said rst longitudinal end portion and frictionally engaging an outer surface portion of said second longitudinal end portion for conjoint rotation of said tubular member and said outer sleeve.
31. An article holder comprising a pair of relatively rotatable tubular members, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement relative to said tubular members, means connecting said carrier and said tubular members for moving said carrier in response to relative rotation of said tubular members, a cover, said cover and said tubular members being co-axially arranged, and a tubular adapter having an end portion thereof in frictional engagement with one member of said tubular members for conjoint rotation, the other end portion of said adapter being relatively wider throughout the length thereof than the first-mentioned end portion, said other' end portion being cooperatively engaged with said cover to hold said cover against movement relative to said one member.
32. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement relative to said sleeves, means connecting said carrier and said sleeves carrier in response to relative Vrotation of said sleeves, a cover co-axially related to said sleeves, and a tubular adapter having a portion thereof frictionally eng-aging an opposed surface portion of the inner sleeve and a rela# tively wider portion thereof engaging an opposed surface portion Vof said cover to hold said cover against movement relative to said inner sleeve.
33. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinally within the inner sleeve in response to relative rotation of said sleeves for carrying an article adapted to project from one end of said sleeves, said inner sleeve having a portion thereof extending longitudinally past the other end of the outer sleeve, a walled end member surrounding the other end of the inner sleeve and including an axial portion radially spaced from an opposed outer surface portion of the extending portion of said inner sleeve, and a mounting element on said extending portion, said mounting element being joined to the inner surface of said axial portion of said end member and to the outer surface of said extending portion whereby rotation of said end member relative to said outer sleeve will actuate said carrier.
34. In a holder assembly, a tubular element open at the opposite ends thereof and capicitated to house an :article within the opposite end portions thereof, an end cap disposed at the end of one of said end portions, a connector member disposed between the said oneof'said end portions and said end cap, said connector member at one end thereof fitting the said one of said end portions and'at the other end thereof fitting said end cap, and said connector member being provided with an out'- wardly extending radial projection, and a cover cap enlclosing the other of said end portions and being seated on said projection.
35. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable sleeves, an article carrier movable longitudinal enclosing said extending portion and frictionally engaging the outer surface of said tubular portion whereby the article holder is safeguarded against accidental relative rotation of said sleeves.
36. An article holder comprising a tubular cover open at the opposite ends thereof, an article carrier movable longitudinally within rsaid cover for project from one end of said cover upon movement of said carrier in one direction, an end member at the other end of said cover and rotatable relative thereto, means connecting said carrier, cover andend member for moving said carrier in response to rotation of said end member relative to said cover, said cover having an end portion thereof enclosing the adjacent is safeguarded against accidental rotation of said end member relative to said cover.
37. A device comprising a tubular casing open at the Iopposite ends thereof, an assembly mounted in each end of said casing, one of said assemblies, at one end of said casing, including a member rotatable relative to said casing, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement for carrying an article toward the other end of said casing, means connecting said carrier, casing and member for moving said carrier in response to rotation of said member relative to said casing, the other of said assemblies comprising means for holding articles in aligned relation at the other end of said casing, said member upon being rotated relative to said casing moving said for moving lsaid.
carrier toward the other assembly whereby articles within said casing are brought into operative relationship.
38. A device for carrying cosmetic accessories comprising a tubular casing, an article holder mounted in each end of said casing, one of said article holders carrying a cosmetic applicator, the other of said article holders being capacitated to carry a cosmetic supply, one of said article holders comprising a member rotatable relative to said casing, an article carrier arranged for longitudinal movement for carrying one of the aforementioned cosmetic accessories toward the other for contact of said cosmetic applicator with said cosmetic supply to remove a portion thereof, and means connecting said carrier, casing and member for moving said carrier in response to rotation of said member relative to said casing.
39. ln combination, two tubular members, one member of said tubular members being positioned around the other member of said tubular members, said one member having a flexible metallic wall, said other member having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside thereof frictionally engaging an opposed portion of said exible metallic wall of said one member, said ridge normally being disposed in the path of movement of said one member and resisting the movement of said one member whereby said one member is distorted upon placement on said other member and said members are held against longitudinal and rotary movement relative to each other.
40. The combination as in claim 39 wherein said longitudinally extending ridge is hollow.
4l. ln combination, two tubular members, one member of said tubular members being positioned around the other member of said tubular members, said other member being metallic and exible, and said other member having at least one longitudinally extending hollow rib on the outside thereof frictionally engaging an opposed surface portion of said one member, said hollow rib normally lying in the path of movement of said one member and resisting the movement of said one member, and one of said members being yieldable with respect to the other of said members whereby permitting said one member to be positioned around said other member and in frictional engagement therewith.
42. In combination, an article holder and a removable cover cap, said cover cap having a flexible metallic wall, said article holder having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside thereof frictionally engaging an opposed portion of said flexible metallic wall of the cover cap, said ridge normally lying in the path of movement of said cover cap and resisting the movement of said cover cap whereby said cover cap is distorted upon placement on said article holder and said cover cap is held against longitudinal and rotary movement relative to said article holder.
43. ln combination, an article holder and a removable metal cover cap, said article holder having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside thereof frictionally engaging the inner surface of said cover cap, said ridge normally lying in the path of movement of said cover cap and resisting the movement thereof to assure frictional engagement between said article holder and said cover cap.
44. ln combination, an article holder and a removable cover cap, said article holder having at least one elongated hollow ridge on the outside thereof for guiding said cover cap on said article holder whereby said cover cap is assembled on said article holder with a minimum of friction rubbing between said cover cap and said article holder.
45. In a tubular appliance capacitated to present an article at the opposite ends thereof and employing a separate removable cover cap for covering the opposite ends thereof; the improvement which comprises: each of the removable cover caps having a exible metal wall, and said tubular appliance having at least one longitudinally extending ridge on the outside thereof adjacent each of the opposite ends thereof frictionally engaging an opposed portion of said flexible metal wall of the cover cap adjacent thereto, the ridges normally lying in the path of movement of the cover caps and resisting the movement of the cover caps whereby each cover cap is distorted upon placement on said tubular appliance to permit the mounting of the cover cap on the adjacent ridge and assure frictional engagement therewith.
46. A holder assembly comprising a cosmetic stick holder open at both ends and adapted to present a cosmetic stick at one end thereof, a brush composed of material for spreading cosmetic substance and a handle for said material, said material being housed within the other end of said cosmetic stick holder and said handle projecting from said other end, said brush being removable from said cosmetic stick holder for contact with a cosmetic stick at said one end of the cosmetic stick holder to transfer cosmetic substance to said material thereof.
47. A holder assembly comprising a tubular holder open at both ends and adapted to house a cosmetic substance in stick form within one end thereof for presentation at said one end thereof, a member including an applicator for cosmetic substance and a handle for said applicator, said applicator being housed within the other end of said tubular holder and said handle being exposed outside said other end of the tubular holder, said handle being removably connected to said tubular holder and providing closure means for said other end of the tubular holder, said member being removable from said tubular holder in order to transfer cosmetic substance to said applicator by contact of said applicator with cosmetic substance at said one end of the tubular holder.
48. A holder assembly comprising a container for cosmetic substance, s aid container having a tubular handle, said tubular handle being open at the end thereof, a member including material for applying cosmetic substance and a handle for said material, said material being housed within said tubular handle, said handle for said material being exposed outside said tubular handle, said member being removable from said tubular handle to obtain cosmetic substance upon contact of said material thereof with cosmetic substance in said container.
49. A holder assembly comprising a tubular holder for a cosmetic substance in stick form adapted to project from one end of said tubular holder, a brush composed of material for spreading cosmetic substance and a ferrule holding one end of said material, said material being exposed outside the other end of said tubular holder and said ferrule being fitted within said other end of said tubular holder.
50. An article holder comprising a pair of concentric relatively rotatable tubular members, an article carrier movable longitudinally in the inner tubular member in response to relative rotation of said tubular members, said inner tubular member having at least one eccentric firm projection on the inner surface thereof normally disposed in the path of movement of said article carrier for restraining the movement of said article carrier.
5l. ln combination, two tubular members, at least one of said tubular members being exible, one tubular member being positioned around the other tubular member, said other tubular member having at least one permanently outwardly extending eccentric hollow projection on the outside thereof, said projection frictionally engaging an opposed surface portion of said one tubular member, the radial distance from the center of said other tubular member to the outer surface of said projection being at least as great as the radius from the center of said one tubular member to portions of the inner surface of said one tubular member laterally adjacent to said opposed surface portion in frictional engagement with said projection, whereby said tubular members are held against longitudinal and rotary movement relative to each other, said projection normally being disposed in the path of movement of said one tubular member and resisting the movement of said one tubular member, thereby causing one of said tubular members to yield with respect to the other of said tubular members in the assembling of said tubular members.
52. In combination, two tubular members, one member of said tubular members being positioned around the other member of said tubular members, said one member having a flexible metal wall, said other member having at least one eccentric permanently outwardly extending projection on the outside thereof frictionally engaging an opposed surface portion of said flexible metal wall, the radial distance from the center of said other member to the outer surface of said projection being at least as great as the radius from the center of said one member to portions of the inner surface of said one member laterally adjacent to said opposed surface portion in frictional engagement with said projection, whereby said tubular members are held against longitudinal and rotary I3 movement relative to each other, said projection normally lying in the path of movement of said flexible metal wall and resisting the movement of said exible metal Wall so that said flexible metal wall will be deformed on pressure from said projection.
