This invention relates to lipstick holders and sharpeners and also containers, and devices for applying liquid nail polish, and includes a com bination of the. facilities mentioned in a single, compact unit.

One of the. principal objects of the present invention is, to provide a combination lipstick and nail polishapplicator in which a lipstick and a supply of nail polish of corresponding color may be conveniently carried and applied by an individual user.

Another object of this invention is to provide a combination lipstick and nail polish applicator, including a sharpener, or pointer for a worn lipstick.

A further object of this invention is to provide a combination lipstick and nail polish applicator, including a nail polish container having a discharge. port controlled by a self-closing valve", which may he used to spread the polish on a nail.

A stillfurther object of the present invention is to provide an improved lipstick sharpener and an improved nail polish applicator.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following specifi cation and reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating certain embodiments of my invention, in which,

Fig. 7 is a section taken on, the line, 1-4 of Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts in the several views, and particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 to 8, inclusive, the combination lipstick and nail polish applicator is indicated generally at 6, and it includes a lipstick holder 8 of the type in which the lipstick I0 is seated in a carrier cup I 2 which is slidably mounted inside atubular guide member I4 having an elongated slot IS in its Wall through which projects a short pin [8 secured. to the cup l2. The guide member [4' is rotatably mounted inside a spiral ferrule 20, and has an enlarged outer end 22 to engage the end of the ferrule. Thisierrule is made of a resilient flat strip and so coiled as to leave a spiral slot 24 in the: ferrule from end to end. The ferrule is snugly fitted within the upper body sleeve 26, which has an inner flange 28 at the top overlying the outer end of the ferrule. This inner flange holds both, the ferrule 20 and the guide member l4 against outward. axial movement within the body sleeve 26. A small inward indentation 30 (shown dotted) at the inner end of the body sleeve engages the inner end of the ferrule 20 to lock it and the guide member 14 against withdrawal from sleeve 26. The pin l8 projects through the straight slot [6 into the spiral slot 24. Upon rotation of uide member 14 within ferrule 20 in a clockwise direction the edge of the straight slot I6. will engage-pin l8, on, cup [2, and force this pin to slide outwardly in spiral slot 24, carrying with it the cup [2 and lipstick Ill; The pin l8 also slides outwardly in straight slot Hi. In this manner the lipstick may be extended, as desired. The

lipstick may be retracted by rotating the guidemember I in the reverse direction. An. enlarged portion i5. of. guide member IA provides a convenientfinger hold for rotating, the member II, and this enlarged portion may be corrugated, knurled or made in polygonal form to aid the grasp;

The enlarged portion l5 of the guide member I4 is recessed and internally threaded at 34 to receive the externally threaded end 36 of a lower body sleeve 38, which is of approximately the same diameter as the upper body sleeve 26, and is designed to function as a nail polish container and. applicator. Sleeve 38 is tapered at its outer end, as: indicated at 40. It is provided with an outlet opening 42 and a self-closing ball valve and nail polish applicator 44 for closing this openingand spreading polish on nails. The ball 44 is held normally seated by a plunger 46,"having an enlarged head 48 concaved at its outer end for contact with ball 44 and having at its- 3 other end a fork 50 which straddles a transverse pin 52 to support the plunger in upright position. A light helical spring 54 is interposed between pin 52 and plunger head 48 to urge ball 44 to its seat over the outlet opening 42. The sleeve 38 is filled with nail polish and then closed by a resilient or flexible stopper 56, which is provided with a suitable finger hold or handle, such as a flexible'ring 58 for lifting the stopper from the sleeve, or container, 38. It will be seen that when guide member [4 is rotated the nail polish container and applicator will be rotated with it. A

partition 35 forming the bottom of recess 34 seals the lipstick chamber from that of the nail polish,

and also provides means whereby the lipstick portion and the nail polish portion of the combina-" tion unit may be safely carried separately in a handbag, and used separately.

In applying nail polish it is necessary only to place the ball 44 against the nail to be polished and press lightly. The liquid polish will'then flow out over the surface of the ball to be spread over the nail.

The combined cap and lipstick sharpener 60 has a depending skirt 62 which fits over the outer end of body sleeve 26. It may also be fitted'over the end 40 of sleeve 38, as indicated in dotted lines, to prevent its loss when the lipstick is in use. If desired, a separate combined cap and sharpener 60 may be used regularly as a closure for the end 40 of sleeve 38. The interior of the cap is provided with a plurality of ridges 64 convergent toward the closed end of the cap and having angular conformity to the taper 55 of the lipstick H). The portion of the cap member provided with the ridges 64 is of smaller diameter than that of the skirt 62, thereby forming a shoulder inwardly of the open end of the skirt, which limits the axial movement of the member Elton-the body sleeve 26, rearwardly thereof. The ridges are preferably sharp at their edges, as shown at 68 in Fig. 8. However, they can be made rounded or blunt to press the taper into a point, and may also be curved to conform to a rounded point. In order to sharpen the lipstick it is necessary only to project the 1 lipstick against the end of the cap and rotate the cap two or three times. The tubular nail polishcontainer 3B is adaptable as a handle for holding the lipstick holder 8 against rotation while the combined cap and sharpener 60 is being rotated to sharpen the end of lipstick 19. The cap can then be removed from body sleeve 26 and the lipstick shavings dumped from the cap.

An important feature of the combined applicater is the facility of keeping the same colorof lipstick and nail polish conveniently togetherat all times. It will be seen that in the event of loss of the stopper 56. the top of container 38 can still be sealed by screwing it tightly against the partition 35. Therefore, except as a feature of convenience in handling the container after it is filled with liquid nail polish, the stopper 56 may be dispensed with.

' The embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3, 9, l and 11 has a specifically different type of lipstick extender and a different form of nail polish applicator, but it is of the same general construction, and functions in a similar. manner. It is provided with a straight lifter type.

The knob extends through 4 a longitudinal slot 16 in the wall of the upper body sleeve or lipstick holder 18. A combined cap and lipstick sharpener 80, similar to the cap and sharpener 60, is rotatably mounted over the open end of the sleeve 18. The enlarged portion of the sleeve or holder 18 is recessed and internally threaded, in the-same manner as the sleeve 26, thereby forming a partitionfl. A lower body sleeve or nail polish container 84, has its upper end threadedly connected to the sleeve 18 in the same manner as the sleeves 26 and 38. However, the outer end of container 84, instead of being tapered, is open and of unrestricted diam- .eter for the reception of a detachable nail polish appliance 86 made of rubber or other resilient material, which may be inserted in the open end of the container 84, and replaced with a new one, when desired.

The appliance 86 has an integral, hollow extension 88, which is tapered toward its outer end and slightly flattened at one side, as indicated at 90, in Figs. 9 and 11. A through slit 92 is formed in the wall of the extension 88 immediately above the flattened portion, this slit being substantially U-shaped, or in the general conformation of a finger nail, with the point extending outwardly. The tongue 94 defined by the slit 92, being resilient, functions as a self-closing valve to provide a normally closed, fluid-tight seal between the opposed edges of the slit. How-- ever, when the tip 95 of the applicator is pressed lightly against a nail surface the slit will open, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 11. When the pressure is relaxed, the edges of the slit will automatically return together in a fluid-tight seal. In this form of nail polish applicator the liquid nail polish is carried in a cylinder, or capsule 98, made of plastic or other impervious material, which is sealed after being filled. This capsule has a convex end I08 which fits loosely within container 84 and is supported by a seat H32 in the inner end of the appliance 8B. A pass sage H14 through the seat I02 in the appliance communicates with the interior I08 of the extension 88. o

In preparing the nail polish applicator for use, the polish container 84 is unscrewed from the upper body sleeve, or lipstick holder 12, and a perforation His is punched in the convex end of capsule 98. The capsule is held with the perforation upward while the polish container 84 is placed over the capsule. The container together with the capsule may then be inverted and the container threaded into the socket of the upper sleeve, or lipstick holder 18. The liquid nail polish will then flow from the capsule through'the. perforation, I06, and the passage H34 into the interior I98 of the extension 88 of the appliance 8E. The resilient tongue'fl l'keeps the edge of the slit 92 normally sea-led against escape of any liquid polish, and the appliance 86, therefore, forms the end portion of the container 84. A cap I I 0 may be placed over the end of the applicator when it is not in use. If desired, a separate cap and sharpener 89 may be used as a closure for the end of container 84.

When it is desired to apply polish to a nail it is necessary only to remove the cap H0 and press the tip 96 of the applicator 86 against the nail surface, preferably near the end of the nail and with the slit 92 pointed in the same direction as the nail. This will slightly open the slit and discharge a small quantity of the liquid polish onto the nail. The pressure is immediately relaxed and the flattened portion of the applicator is then used to spread and smooth the polish on the surface of the nail, as shown in Fig. 10, in the manner in which the conventional brush for such purpose is used. Moreover, the flattened portion may be made slightly convex to conform to the general contour of a nail. If desired, a plain cap may be screwed onto the threaded end of the container 84, so that the nail polish applicator and the lipstick applicator may be carried and used separately. The capsule 98 provides convenient means for refilling the container 85 with liquid nail polish, but, should a refill capsule not be available when needed, the liquid polish can be poured directly into the container 84.

It will be seen from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, that I have provided a lipstick applicator with lipstick sharpener and a nail polish applicator combined in a single compact unit, of attractive and economical design, in which the lipstick and nail polish applicator elements, while used for different purposes, are cooperatively combined in the assembly to form the single unit.

Various changes may be made in the construction of my combination applicator within the spirit and scope of my invention. Therefore, it should be understood that the embodiments of my invention shown in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be illustrative, only, and not restrictive thereto.

I claim:

1. A combination lipstick applicator and sharpener comprising a tubular receptacle, a lipstick in said receptacle and axially movable therein, said lipstick being normally tapered at its outer end, a closure cap and lipstick sharpener unit having at one end a cylindrical skirt adapted for slidable and rotatable mounting on the end of said receptacle, said unit being also provided with radially and inwardly projecting ridges formed integrally with and wholly inside the wall of said unit, the inner edges of said ridges being angularly arranged around the axis of said wall and also longitudinally tapered to conform to the normal tapered surface of said lipstick.

2. A combination lipstick applicator and sharpener according to claim 1 in which both ends of said tubular receptacle are of the same diameter to permit transfer of said unit from one end to the other end.

3. A combination lipstick applicator and sharpener according to claim 1 in which the closed end of said unit containing said ridges is of smaller diameter than that of said skirt, thereby providing a shoulder limiting the slidable movement of said unit on said receptacle rearwardly thereof.

4. A combination lipstick applicator and sharpener according to claim 1 in which said ridges are substantially V-shaped in cross-section with the edges thereof annularly arranged around the axis of the wall of said unit.
