2 Claims.
This invention relates to a garment construction, and more particularly to the adaptation of a pocket within trousers, slacks, shorts and the like garments which are secured about the Waist of the wearer.
It is an object of the present invention to provide in a garment construction adapted to be retained about the waist of the wearer a pocket having a rear panel and a front panel where the front panel is provided with a vertically extending slide fastener device which is separable to permit the separation of the front panel from the rear. panel as the garment is opened, and the slidehaving been drawn toward the bottom of the pocket, and to thereby eliminate the need for a cover or placket to prevent the slide fastener parts from engaging the skin of the wearer as would be necessary were the slide fastener placed in the rear panel of the pocket.
It is another object of the invention to provide a pocket construction for trousers, shorts and the like garments wherein there is a slide fastener arrangement operable by a slide accessible from the interior of the pocket and whereby to permit easy access to the interior of the garment while the waistband is secured about the wearer and wherein the slide fastener is located on the inner side of the pocket and elevated so as to eliminate any engagement with the hand upon the hand being inserted into the bottom of the pocket.
Other objects of the invention are to provide trouser or waist supported garments having the above objects in mind, which is of simple con struction, inexpensive to manufacture, where the pocket is easily installed and made a part of the garment, easy to operate and adjust, requires a minimum number of parts, and gives the garment a smooth front appearance.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connec tion with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garment employing the pocket construction of the present invention with the pocket parts separated and the waist band detached, for the purpose of put ting on or removing the garment;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the side of the garment with the pocket closed" and the waist band buttoned;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the pocket before it becomes a part of the garment;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 6-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line- 5-5 of Fig. 2, the pocket being I sewed into the garment.
Referring now particularly to the figures,=l0 representsgenerally a pair of shorts having leg portions H and I2 and a waist band it with an overlapping end l4 having a buttonhole opening !5 adapted to be fastened to a button It on the opposite'end of the waistband. A button i1 is provided on the inner side of the waist band 13 and when the waist band is fastened, this button will be received by a button hole 18.
The trouser leg portion I2 includes a rear panel l9 and a frontpanel 2t which are stitched together along line 21 up to a point indicated at 22. A pocket 23, shown in Fig. 3, is connected to the rear panel alongits side edge 21% by a stitching 25, and its inner rear portion 26 which has the edge 24 will serve as a part of the leg portion and is connected along its upperedge 2'! to the band It as indicated at 28.
A front portion 29 is connected to the rear portion 26 of the pocket by a hem Bil which extends down the inner sideof'the pocket and around the bottom thereof as indicated at (Hand upwardly on'the outer side of'the-pocket to the point 22.
The upper edge of the front portion is out on a bias as indicated at 32 to conform to the shape of the frontpanel 20 of the leg portion I2. This front panel'is cut-as indicated at 33, and the front portion 29- of the pocket is sewed along its inclined edge 32 to the cut edge 33 of the front panel 28 of the leg portion I2 as indicated by stitching 34.-
The upper edge of'the front portion 29 of the pocket which-is relatively'narrow as indicated at 35- and including one strip 36 of a slide fastener device. Another slide fastener 3! is connected along the inner'edge of the pocket under the hem 39 and these slide fastener elements 38 and 31 thus lie on the front portion of the pocket. They are separated and closed by a slide 88 having a handle 39 thatis accessible from the inner side of the'pocket:
2'! but is connectedwith the edge 35 to the front panel 29 under the waist band;
t will be seenthat the'slide fasteners lie wholly in the-front portion 29'iofthe'pocket and on the side of the pocket away from the skin 'of' the wearer of the garment. Accordingly, it is unnecessary to provide any protection beyond the protection which is had from the rear portion of the pocket in order to keep the slide fastener away from the skin of the wearer. The slide fastener is accessible from the inside of the The upper end of zipper fastener 31 as indicated at 40 is loosefrom the rear edge pocket and lies on the outer or front side of the pocket and away from the skin of the wearer. Inasmuch as it is unnecessary to provide a placket over the slide fastener to protect the wearer, as would be the case would the slide fastener be provided on the rear portion 26 of the pocket, the expense and cost of producing trousers, shorts and the like with pockets is reduced.
l Also, the rear portion 26 of the pocket will form a part of the front panel 26, that is the part that is connected to the rear panel l9 as indicated at 25 and has its upper edge connected to the end of the waist band it as indicated at 28.
The slide fastener device extends only part way down the front portion of the pocket, leaving the bottom of the pocket free to receive articles. The pocket can be used, and the hand placed in the bottom of the pocket without interference from the slide fastener, as the slide fastener is located close to the inner side of the pocket and upwardly away from the bottom thereof.
A belt 12 can be passed through loops :3 and 3% on the waist band, and after the waist band has been connected together by the bottom buttons l6 and ll, the belt t2 can be fastened. End 45 having hoies will thus be slipped through buckle i! and fastened in the usual manner. The slide handle 3:? will be pulled upwardly to cause the slide 33 to close the slide fastener elements 35 and El. The slide handle 39 of the slide can be thereafter looked upon itself in the usual manner.
To remove the garment the belt 42 can be released, thereafter the buttons 55 and I? will be released, and the slide fastener handle 35-) will be pulled downwardly by reaching inside the pocket and pulling downwardly on the handle 39. The completion of this operation renders the shorts easy to remove.
On the opposite side of the shorts, an ordinary pocket 48 may be provided, as there is no necessity to open the shorts at two locations. However, it will be understood that a similar pocket can be fashioned at the opposite sides of the shorts, if it is desired to open the shorts at two locations. A pleat 49 is provided in the front panel 20 of the leg portion l2 and a similar pleat 5!) is provided in the front of the leg portion H. The leg portions of the shorts can respectively have the usual cuffs 5i and 52 respectively, and the seat of the shorts can be formed in the usual manner.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a garment construction wherein the pocket is built into the garment, the rear portion of the pocket becoming a part of the front panel 1 of the pocket and the separable part of the front panel of the leg having the front portion of the pocket connected thereto so as to be adjustable therewith upon the slide fastener device being released. The slide fastener device is, as will be seen, a part of the front portion of the pocket and is thus away from the skin of the wearer. It will also be apparent that the pocket is so formed at its rear portion that the wearer is protected from the slide fastener. If the slide fastener had been provided in the rear portion of the pocket, it would have been necessary to provide an extra placket and stitching operation upon the pocket. It will thus be seen that the pocket construction has been considerably simplified for garments of this type.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A garment construction comprising a waist band portion having separable ends and leg portions depending therefrom, one of the leg portions having front and rear panels, said front panel having its top part separable from the side of the rear panel. along the side of the leg portion whereby to provide a space for a side pocket, a pocket structure having a rear portion connected to the rear panel of the leg portion along the side thereof and along its upper edge to one end of the waist band, said pocket further having a front portion connected to the separable part of the front panel of the leg portion, said front portion of the pocket being severed vertically parallel to the inner edge of the pocket in front of the rear portion and having slide fastener elements on the severed parts and lying in front of the rear portion and a slide element accessible from the inside of the pocket, whereby the rear portion serves as a guard to protect the wearers skin from being in ured by the slide fastener elements.
