Referring now in detail to the drawing, I [l designates a ladys hat embodying the invention, the same comprising generally of a crown l! and a brim !2. The crown Il may be of any suitable shape and construction. It is here shown for the purpose of illustration as comprising a fiat top panel 13, to the outer end of which is attached as by stitching l4 an annular tapered panel l5. A stiffening panel It such as buckram is located inside Panel [5. A wire H may be inserted into the upper end of the hat, and about which the panel 15 is folded. The stitching I4 serves to stitch the panels I3, I 5 and [6 together at the top. The lower end of the panel i5 is folded *beneath the lower edge of the panel l5 and is stitched thereto by a line of stitching l8.
The brim 12 comprises a top flexible annular panel or sheet 19 of cloth or other flexible material, stitched to the lower edge of the crown by said line of stitching l8. Stitched to the underside of the inner portion of the brim I9 is an an nular stiffener panel 20 of buckram. Underlying the panel 20 is a cloth panel 2|, likewise stitched thereto by the line of stitching [8. The panels 28 and 2| are stitched together by a line of stitching 22.
The stiffener 2B and the underlying panel 2i 7 of cloth or other flexible material may be somewhat crescent shaped, being of greater width at the front than at the back. A size band 23 may be stitched as at 24 to the inner edges of the panels 20, 2|.
The brim I2 further comprises a lower flexible annular brim panel, cloth or sheet 25 stitched to the panels Zll, 2! by said line of stitching 22. The brim panels [9 and 25 are stitched together at their outer periphery by a seam 26. The panels 19 and 25 maybe wider at the front than at the back, gradually becoming narrower toward the back, as shown in Fig. 1. However, as the lower panel 25 is secured to crescent shaped panels 20,
and 2| by stitching 22, the width of the lower panel with respect to'the upper panel 19 increases toward the back. The upper panel I9 is formed portion of th crown.
stiffener 30. The stiffener 30 may comprise an intermediate resilient flexible semi-stiff strip 3| of any suitable construction, such as is used for example as a stay or bone in a corset. The outer ends thereof may be covered by sleeves 32 of cloth which would harmonize with the cloth of which the hat is made. Stitched to the outer ends of the stiffener 30, as at 32a, are loops 33.
It will be noted that the stiffener 353 extends all around the inside of the periphery of the brim adjacent the seam 26. The outer or looped ends 33 of the stiffener are located at the back of the hat adjacent the opening 27. The stiffener thus expands the entire brim of the hat to give the ap- I pearance of a large brim hat.
Attached to the front of the hat, on opposite sides of the crown, are a pair of ornamental button 34 of any suitable material. On opposite sides of th line of stitching 23 the upper and lower brim panels or sheets [9, 25 are stitched together with an elastic strip as at 35.
In order to change the style of "the hat from that shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, one end of the stiffener 39 is pulled out through'the opening 2? and drawn sufficiently so that it can be wrapped around the crown of the hat, and'the loop 33 thereof engaged with one of the buttons 34. As that is 'done' one side of the: hat iscollapsed, contracted or constricted, and the constricted portion due to the presence of the clastic strip 35, will be drawn in and drape about the lower. portion of the crown of the hat over the top of the stiffener brim panel 20. If desired'the style shown in Fig. 3 may be produced by drawing both ends of the stiffener out through the opening 21, wrapping them about the crown of the hat and'engaging both buttons 54; When that is done the entire sleeve portionof the brim is contracted or drawn in and the elastic strip 35 will drape the constricted brim about the lower Referring to Fig. 2 it will be noted that either one or the other ends of the stiffener 30 may be drawn in so that the hat will have a large brim on either the left side or the right side.
In Fig. 11 there is shown a hat l0a embodying the invention and illustrating a modified construction. The hat I [la is the same as the hat l0 except that the stiffener 300. has male and female snap fasteners 40a, 4021 at the outer ends respectively, thereof, which may be snapped together as shown at 40 in Fig. 11, at the front of the hat when the ends of the stiffener are drawn out. The part of the stiffener which is wrapped around the front of the hat may be held in position by a loop 4| which is attached to the front of the hat by a rivet or other fastening member 42. The latter of course may be decorated, as by a button, at the front if desired. The stiffener 30a is shown in Fig. 12 and the snap fastener portions 40a, 4017 are at the ends thereof, as illustrated.
In Fig. 13 there is shown a hat [0b embodying the invention and illustrating yet another modifled construction. In Fig. 13 the stiffener 30b is a continuous one piece member, that is, it is not severed at the back. The part which is drawn out through the rear opening may be brought up and tucked into one of the two loops 50 which are stitched to the top of the crown of the hat. Furthermore, stiffener 30b may comprise a core 52 having a colored piece of cloth 53 wrapped therearound and stitched together as at 54 to form a piping. The contacting portions of the binding strip may be inserted be- In Fig. there is shown a hat lilo embodying the invention and'illustratingyet another modifled construction. The net lflc'is the same as the hat it with the exception that the stiffener .300 is provided at the outerends thereof with spaced eyelets'liti. The outer ends of thestiffener may be .pulled out of the opening v2l. .At-
tached to the 'backof the hat at the lower end of the crown and just above'theopening 21 is a .hook v(SI which may be engaged in a pair of overlapping eyelets '50.
Thus the stiffener 300 may be drawn to :various-adjusted degrees and en gaged with the hook 6|, The protruding ends of the -stiifener may be :tucked within the brim.
In Fig. 18 there is shown yet anothenmodified form 'of the invention, comprising a hat Nd.
The hat led has a curved crown Hi. It-has a brim similar to the brim of the hat Mia. The stiffener may be a one piece continuous stiffener designated by numeral 1 I. However, there is attached to the rear of the crown of the hat, adjacent the opening 2'! through which the stiffener is pulled out, a loop 13. The portion of the stiffener H which is pulled out of the opening 21 may be passed through the loop 13 so as to be held in the drawn condition.
While the invention is applicable to womens hats it is also applicable to girls, juniors and childrens hats or any millinery.
