Application April 22, 1952, Serial No. 283,671
1 Claim. (01. 2-49) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in bibs for infants, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a bib including a horizontally projecting tray at the lower end of the usual body portion thereof, so that such a tray may not only catch particles of food dropping from the infant's mouth, but may also be used for receiving various items within easy reach of the infant.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a bib which is designated generally by the reference character Ill and embodies in its construction the usual upwardly extending body portion 12 provided at its upper end with a neck receiving recess l4 and with coacting tie cords l6, whereby the entire bib may be attached to the neck of an infant.
In addition, a pair of waist encircling straps I8 are secured to the opposite side edges of the lower portion of the body l2 as indicated at 20 in Figure 2, these straps having snap fastener means 22 for separably and adjustably connecting the same together at the back of the waist of the infant.
The essence of novelty in the invention resides in the provision of a horizontally disposed, forwardly projecting tray panel 24 which is preferably formed from the same material as the main body portion of the bib and is stitched at its rear edge to the lower edge of the body portion l2, as indicated at 26. The rear edge 26 of the tray panel 24 is preferably of an arcuate configuration so as to conform to the curvature of the body portion I 2 when the bib is in position on the infant.
The tray panel 24 is equipped with an upstanding marginal flange 28 which extends aroundthe front and sides of the tray panel and isstitched thereto'as indicated at 80.
The flange 28 is preferably made from a double thickness of material and has a stiffener strip 32 embedded therein, whereby the flange is not only sustained in an upstanding position, but whereby a certain amount of stiffness is provided for the panel 24 itself.
The ends of the flange 28 are secured at 34 to the opposite side edges of the body portion l2, so that the entire tray is supported in a forwardly projecting, horizontal position, as shown.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A bib comprising a vertically elongated and transversely arcuated body portion adapted to be positioned on the chest of a user and affording a pair of rearwardly extending wings at the opposite sides of the lower end portion thereof, a pair of neck encircling tie cords provided at the upper end of said body portion, a forwardly projecting horizontal tray panel having an arcuate rear edge coextensive with .and secured to the lower edge of said body portion and Wings, said panel being substantially wider than said body portion and projecting laterally to opposite sides thereof beyond said wings, an upstanding marginal flange provided on said panel and having its end edges secured to rear edges of said wings, a stiffener strip embedded in said flange, and a pair of waist encircling straps secured to rear edges of said wings adjacent the upper edge of said flange and extending rearwardly therefrom.
