(Cl. 128-460) The present invention relates to a brassiere construction, and it particularly relates to a double wall brassiere construction, and it particularly relates to a nursing brassiere which, although designed to be used in connection with maternity wear, also will find considerable use as a support garment.

It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a simple, readily fitted, light-weight, comfortable brassiere which, while giving adequate support, will enable ready use by mothers in connection with nursing activities.

Another object is to provide a brassiere which may be readily applied and removed and used for nursing purposes without removal of the brassiere or loss of its supporting function.

Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.

In accomplishing the above objects it has been found most suitable to utilize a brassiere with a main double section front cup portion, one for each breast, with a central separation or attachment enabling the two breast cup portions to be connected together across a middle vertical line of the garment and at the front thereof.

Interiorly of the front breast cup sections fit two rear breast cup auxiliary sections having simple openings for nursing which also will have upper breast cup sections and lower breast cup sections. Each of these breast cup portions will have elastic members extending laterally across the bottom edges thereof, with the front section having a double width or thickness, as compared to the interior breast cup structure.

The size may consist of trapezoidal panels extending around the sides of the body which terminate in an elastic strap having a plurality of hook and eye adjustments thereon, adjustable for size.

It has been found most satisfactory to provide the breast cup sections with a vertical and horizontal bias, both for the interior and exterior breast cup structure, and to provide junction lines between the upper and lower section of each breast cup, whether interior or exterior, which will extend substantially across the nipples of the breast cup structures.

Desirably, the lower breast cup sections of both the interior and exterior structure, as well as the upper breast cup sections of both the interior and exterior structure,

expand from relatively narrow edge sections upwardly along both the upper and lower edges to a maximum width and peak at a vertical line extending through the nipple portions.

At the front of the exterior breast cup structure there will be a hook and eye attachment so that these sections may be detached from the interior sections.

Generally, the exterior and interior breast cup sections will be joined together at their vertical side edges under the arm pit sections and also along the top outside edges as they ascend to the peaks above the nipple portions. Otherwise, the exterior and interior structures will be free of attachments to one another.

Desirably, the cut of the exterior structure is such that it will fit more loosely than the interior structure and so that a tight fit of the interior breast cup structures will tend to bulge out the exterior breast cup structures.

With the foregoing-and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a brassiere garment according to the present invention, showing the top straps and the exterior breast cup structure.

Referring to FIGS. 1 to 4, there is shown an exterior breast cup structure with the upper exterior cup portions A and the lower exterior breast cup sections B.

Each of these breast cup sections has shoulder strap attachments C and an elastic lower edging D. The entire breast cup structure is shown best in FIG. 3 with the upper breast cup sections E, the lower breast cup sections F and the nursing openings G.

The front or exterior breast cup structure A--B has the separable attachments H at front of the garment and the adjustable attachments J at the rear of the garment mounted in connection with the elastic band K.

The upper breast cup sections A of the exterior structure have a vertical and lateral bias and they have tape edgings at 11, 12, 13 and 14 with an open stitch connection 15 to the upper edge of the lower section B. These sections A have a maximum height at their middle portion 16 where they reach a peak .17 directly above the nipple portion 18 of the exterior breast cup structure The lower breast cup sections also are connected by the open stitching 18 to the lower edges of the upper sections B and they reach a maximum height at 19 directly below the nipple portions 18 and have a minimum width at 20 adjacent the fastening H and at 21 adjacent the side edge 23.

The exterior breast cup sections AB are joined together by the hook and eye fastening structure H (see FIG. 3), which has the eyes protected by the backing strip 31 and the hooks 32 protected by the cover edge strip 33.

The cover strip 31 is a flannel or felt portion which will fit smoothly against the interior breast cup structure and in which the roughened face thereof will grip such structure to eliminate relative vertical movement.

The entire breast cup structure has a central connection stitched seam at 34 extending vertically.

The upper sections E are joined together at their narrowest inside portions 35 and they ascend to a peak at 36 at their widest portions, where they are joined to the ends 37 of the shoulder straps C, together with the similar peaks 17 of the exterior upper cup sections A.

The upper outside oblique edges at 38 of the interior top sections E are stitched directly to the corresponding edges 39 (see also FIG. 1) of the exterior structure, and the side edges of both the interior structures EF, as well as the exterior structures AB, are stitched together at the side edges 40 extending downwardly from under the arm pit sections.

The shoulder straps C are attached to the rear sections 41 adjacent the connections to the elastic strap K at the points 50, as shown in FIGS 1 and3, and these straps have the adjustment buckles 51 adjacent the peaks 36 and 17 at the front'structure of the garment.

The openings G will have the double folded fabric tape edging 52 which will extend acrossthe edges 54 and 55 of the transverse seams 56 and 57 extending horizontally across the nipple portion or peak portion of the breast cups.

In the alternative structure of FIG. 5, the interior breast cup structure has an overlapped construction with the portion adjacent the outside side seam being devoid of a transverse horizontal seam to consist of an overlap end portion 65 and other portion 66, both of which are stitched together at the side seam 67.

This overlap structure permits greater pliability and flexibility at the sides of the interior breast cup structure It is thus apparent that the present applicant has provided a novel double function brassiere, giving a double support to the breasts whichis particularly useful for maternity purpose by ready removal and unhooking of the fi'ont exterior breast cup structure for nursing purposes.

The rear structure is readily adjustable and also has a detachable elastic strap connection which permits ready fitting on and removal of the entire brassiere structure. The brassiere, in spite of its double exterior and interior construction, is quite comfortable to wear, will not unduly constrain the body and will give adequate support Without discomfort.

As many changes could be made in the .above brassiere construction, and many widely different embodiments of this invention could be madewithout departure from the scope of the claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the, above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

In the embodiment of FIG. 5 correspondingly functioning par-ts are indicated by the same letters and numerals primed as in FIGS; 1 to 4.

The inner breast cover structure F has overlapping sections and 66 the edges of which are covered by the spirally attached tape 102 on section 65 and 103 on sec.- tion 66. The top section 65 will extend from the peak 36' down to the waistband L, while the under section 66 will also extend down from under the armpit, as indicated at 11 in FIG. 1 to the waist band F. This overlapping construction will give greater play to the opening G.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, What is claimed is:

A double front breast cup structure nursing brassiere having an exterior breast cup structure with upper and lower breast cup sections, having a separable fastener con-- nection extending vertically across the middle front portion of the brassiere, and an interior breast cup structure with upper and lower breast cup sections and said upper breast cup sections leaving oblique top and outside edges and said cup sections being joined at the side seams and having a vertical front seamed connection and a central opening extending across portions of the interior of each breast cup structure, the interior cup sections having overlapping side portions adjacent the sides of the brassiere. and secured together at the side seams of the brassiere, V
