TOILET PAPER HOLDER Filed June 50, 1952 Patented Nov. 10, 1953 Earl J. Hill, North Durham, N. 0.; William Tippett Hill, administrator of said Earl J. Hill, deceased, assignorof one-half to George W. Ferrell and one-half to .Zackariah T. Hampton,
Durham, N.
Application June 30, 1952, Serial No. 236,298
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements and structural refinements in toilet paper holders, and the principal object of the invention is to positively eliminate wastage of paper, this being achieved by providing a holder which permits only a few sheets of paper to be severed from the roll at one time and which prevents the roll as a whole to be removed from the holder. l i
Particularly, the inst-ant invention is an improvement on a similar device for which United States Patent No. 2,582,036 was granted to me on January 8, 1952. While constructing and using the device disclosed in my previous patent, I found that the same lends itself to certain structural simplifications and improvements, which are embodied in my present invention.
As in my previous device, an important feature 1 Claim, (01. 242 552) of this invention resides in the provision of means for locking the holder so that the roll of paper thereon cannot be removed until such time as the paper is completely unwound and used from the roll, at which time the holder may be readily unlocked so that the supply of paper may be replenished.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in its closed position, a roll of paper being illustrated in position in the holder by dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention in its open position;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional detail, taken 1y connected at 20 to the stationary member I2, the member 18 being swingable from an open position shown in Figure 2 to the closed position shown in Figure 1, wherein the tapered free end portion lid of the member is overlaps the truncated free end portion I2a of the stationary member l2.
It will be noted that the portion ll8ll is provided with convergent side edges 22 and with a perpendicular end edge 24, while an angulated locking tongue 26, slightly narrower than the end edge 24, extends inwardly from the end edge, as is best shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The end portion We of the stationary member I2 is formed with a transversely extending recess or slot 28 to receive the tongue 26, whereby to lock the movable member I8 in its closed position.
Moreover, a pair of convergent, elongated guards 3B are provided at the opposite side edges of the truncated portion l2a, these guards being disposed at the opposite sides or ends of the recess 28 and at the opposite side edges 22 of the portion l8a, so that the guards constitute guiding elements for the portion [8a when the latter is being swung to its closed position to engage the tongue 26 with the recess 28.
The members l2, [8 are preferably in the nature of straps having a width substantially equal to the major diameter of an elliptical core 32 of a roll of paper 34, so that when the roll is installed in the holder, it cannot be rotated and paper must be removed therefrom by unwinding a few sheets at one time.
It will be observed that the tongue 26, recess 23 and guards 30 are disposed substantially centrally between the ends of the roll 34 inside the core 32, so that once the roll is installed in the holder, the locking means 26, 28 cannot be separated to release the roll. To prevent any possibility of tampering with the lockin means, the distance between the convergent ends of the uards 30 is substantially equal to the width of the end edge 24, whereby the guards prevent a screw driver, or the like, from being inserted between the overlapped portions [2a, l8a for the purpose of withdrawing the tongue 26 from the recess 28. Of course, when the supply of paper on the roll is exhausted, the core 32 may be torn open and the holder unlocked for installation of a new roll.
It is to be understood that when the holder is in its closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the members I2, I8 possess suificient resiliency so a to sustain the tongue 26 in the recess 28,
If desired, an opening 36 may be provided in the member I2 in alignment with one of the screws 16 to facilitate installation thereof, the other screw, of course, being readily accessible when the member I8 is open.
It is believed that the advantages and use .of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary. 7
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may beresorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: r
Locking means for a paper roll holder of the type having a stationary member for insertion in one end of the 1'01]. and a pivoted member swingable laterally and endwise into the other end of the, roll, said locking means comprising a free fiat end portion on said stationary member having an aperture therein and a pair of lateral straight, fiat guards thereon upon opposite sides of said aperture, a fiat free end portion on said pivoted member laterally swingable and endwise movable in between said guards into overlapping flat engagement with said first named end portion, said guards converging relatively in the direction of endwise movement of said second named portion and said second named portion having relativeIy convergent edges engageable flush with said guards by lateral and endwise swinging of said second named portion, and a terminal right angled tongue on said second named portion engageable with said first named portion by lateral swinging of said second named portion and slidable thereon by endwise swinging of said second named portion into registration with said aperture to be snapped into said apertune by lateral swinging of said second named portion when said edges are engaged with said guards, said guards and edges preventing said end portions from being pried apart.
EARL J. HILL.
