Description

Nov. 21, 1950 N. CLINE ADJUSTABLE CORNICE FOR DRAPERIES AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 16, 1949 INVENTOR.
Norman Cline Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE CORNICE FOR DRAPERIES AND THE LIKE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to adjustable window cornices. It is a general rule that in rented homes and apartments, window cornices are put up by the tenants, and since the windows of the various homes and apartments vary in size, therefore, it is necessary for tenants to put up new window cornices each time they move.
It is a prime object of my invention to provide an adjustable window cornice that may be adjusted to fit various widths of windows and that is easily attached thereto and easily removed therefrom.
A further important object of my invention is to provide adjustable window cornices that have an adjustable range to cover windows of different widths. The said window cornices are decorative in appearance and may be covered with fabric covering material to match the window drapes.
A still further object of my invention is to provide adjustable window cornices that are simple in design and that may be economically produced in quantity.
Other objects and advantages embraced in my invention will be disclosed in the following description and the accompanying illustrations, wherein like parts are designated by like numerals and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention shown attached to a window frame drawn in phantom lines and also showing in phantom lines an adjusted position of the window cornice on a smaller sized window.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view, showing the means of attaching and supporting the central panel of my invention to the end cornice elements thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the resilient panel supporting bracket used to hold the central panel against the end cornice elements.
Referring to the illustrations, my invention is generally designated 4 and consists of end cornice elements 5 and 6, havin front portions 8, top portions 9 and end portions I0, forming open box-like structures, which are mounted by cornice attaching eyes H, upon the top portion of window frame l6.
The said end cornice elements 5 and 6 are designed to cover the top portion of the window drapes l8 and have extended decorative edge portions 20. A slidable central panel 1 is designed to fit against the inner surface of front portion 8 of the end cornice elements 5 and 6 and is held in position by resilient panel supporting brackets I 2. The said resilient panel supz porting brackets 12 are attached by flattened attaching portions l3 by attaching holes 22 and screws 23 on the underside of top portions 9, in such a position that an offset panel engaging portion M will engage the lateral groove [5 formed on the inner surface of central panel I.
The offset panel engaging portion M has rounded end portions l9 to facilitate the sliding movement of the offsetpanel engaging portions M within lateral groove I5.
Since the panel supporting brackets 12 are of resilient construction such as wire, the said offset panel engaging portions M are maintained firmly in contact within later groove [5 to hold central panel I tightly in place between end cornice elements 5 and 6, forming a complete front section to the adjustable window cornice 4.
Fig. 1 illustrates in solid and phantom lines two of the adjusted positions of the adjustable window cornice 4, showing that it may be mounted on wider and narrower widths of windows merely by sliding the end cornice elements 5 and 6 toward each other or'away from each other.
Edges 20 of front portions 8 and the bottom edge 2| of panel 1 may be of decorative scrolled design if desired and fabric cornice covering material l 1 may be attached over the front portion 8 and the front of central panel I to match the design in the window drapes l8, which are shown in phantom lines in Fig. 1.
The end cornice elements 5 and 6 and the central panel 1 would preferably be made of wood such as plywood forlightweight and durable construction.
A great advantage of my adjustable window cornices is that they may be easily and quickly moved from one window to another within a home or apartment regardless of the width of the window, or they may be taken from one home or apartment to a different home or apartment, having different sized windows.
A most particular advantage in connection with my adjustable window cornices would be for a person or family living in small hotel apartment or rooming house who is obliged to move frequently and who therefore wishes to have cornices that are removable and that are adjustable.
Although I have herein described rather suc cinctly the nature and. use of my invention so that persons skilled in the art will have no difficulty apprising themselves of the teachings thereof and, inasmuch as the disclosure is susceptible of various alterations, modifications, and improvements, I hereby reserve the right to all modificaing a pair of end cornice elements, a central panel element provided with a longitudinabgrgoveeona the interior thereof, and resilient panel support-- ing bracket means secured interlorly ofpthe said. end cornice elements and provided with -"aresil-' ient ofiset panel engaging portion slidably-fitted.
