This invention relates to curtain and drapery holders and it has particular reference to a new and useful device adapted to be aflixed to the-facing of a window or other opening and on which is suspended window curtains or draperies.

The principal object of the invention is to provide not only a device for holding back curtains and draperies in a pleasing manner but likewise defines a recess in which the edges of the window shade may lie in order that the curtains or draperies will not interfere with free and unrestricted movements of the window shades.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified which is pleasing in appearance, simple and inexpensive and so constructed that with but little modification, hold-back may be provided for both single and double windows. The invention further. eliminates unsightly and unsanitary cloth tie-backs and substitutes therefor the more sanitary and neat appearing hold-back for curtains.

With the foregoing objects as paramount, the invention has particular reference to its salient features of construction and arrangement of parts which will become manifest as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:-

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a window in elevation showing the curtains and shadewith the invention in mounted position.

Figure 2 is a view on lines 22 on Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a detail view in perspective of the invention, and

Figure 4 is a modified view showing the construction of the invention as applied to a double window.

Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawing, 1 designates the sill and 2 the jambs of a conventional window.

Heretofore, draperies and especially curtains made of light material, when held back to the jambs or facing of the window, interfere with movements of the window shade inasmuch as there has been provided no means to prevent direct contact of the curtain with the shade at the point where the curtains are embraced by the conventional type of holdback. The present in vention is comprised of the device shown in' Figures 3 and 4 in detail which may be constructed of metal although it may be preferred that they be constructed of hard rubber, bakelite or any other flexible or resilient material in order that they will not be injured by objects striking them since they may then yield to such objects. Moreover, they may be suitably decorated to correspond with the pattern or color of the curtains or draperies which they have been designed to support.

The single device shown in Figure 3 is comprised of a curved portion a, a portion 1) and a mounting portion 0 in which there is provided screw holes 3 by which the device may be secured to the facing of a window in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will be observed that since the curved portion a is spaced from the mounting portion 0, a recess A is provided to embrace the edges of the window shade 4 and thus distinctly separate the same from the curtains 5 at the point where the latter are caught up and suspended by the curved or looped portion a of the invention.

It is apparent from the foregoing that the peculiar construction of the device through which the recess A is defined, protects the edges of the shade against wear by coming frequently into contact with the curtains and draperies during movement thereof. In addition to this, it obviates the annoyance caused by the interference of the shade by the decorative hangings of the Window.

The modified form of the invention shown in Figure 4 embraces the same principle as the structure shown in Figure 3 except that it is double and accommodates the adjacent curtains of a double window. In this case, the looped portions a. face each other and are spaced from the mounting portion b by the right angle bends 0, thereby defining a space B in which the edges of adjacent shades may be freely moved. In double windows, a single device such as shown in Figure 4 is affixed to the mullion 6 and two of the devices such as shown in Figure 3 are provided, one being secured to each of the opposing jambs of the window. Accordingly, the edges of both I shades are protected.

Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of some modification and such modification as is considered within the scope and meaning of the appended claims is also considered within the spirit and intent of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a holder for window hangings comprising a member having a curved portion to embrace said window hangings and a mounting portion from which said curved portion is spaced and arranged to be affixed to the casing of a window, said curved portion extending outwardly from said window and toward the center thereof to define a recess to receive theedge of a window shade.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a holding device for window curtains and draperies comprising a member having a mounting portion and a curved portion spaced therefrom to receive and hold a window curtain, said mounting portion 8 being arranged to be aflixed to the casing of a defining a recess to receive the edge of a window shade whereby to separate the same from said window curtain. 4

4. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain holding device comprising a strip of material having a series of spaced bends and a looped .end to embrace a window curtain and to provide a mounting portion by which .the device is secured to the casing of a window, the space between the bends of said strip of material defining a recess for receiving the edge of a window shade whereby to separate the same from said window curtain.
