Description

Oct. 31, 1950 c, w, KENDRlcK 2,528,059
KNIFE CASE Filed April 13, 1948 4 l2 l6 24 X 34: Fig 5 Inventor Corr/nae W. Kendrick Patented Oct. 31 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates .to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in knife cases, and the principal object of the invention is to cover the sharp cutting edge of a knife when it is not being used, thereby preventing possible injur to the person carrying the knife, as well as protecting the cutting edge from possible damage.
This object is achieved by the provision of a case or sheath which is removably receivable on the blade of the knife, and an important feature of the invention lies in the provision of means for removably retaining the case or sheath in position.
An additional feature of the invention resides in the provision of a knife case which is simple in construction, which may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from the knife blade, and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view, showing the invention in situ on a knife;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the subject shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an underside plan view of the subject shown in Figure 2, and;
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 55 in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a knife case designated generally by the reference character 10, the same being intended for use in association with a knife 12 including a handle [4' and a blade H5.
The cutting edge N3 of the blade it usually projects beyond the adjacent edge 2!! of the handle 14, thus creating what may be referred to as an outward step 22, the utilization of which will be more fully hereinafter described.
The case Ill embodies in its construction a suitable sheath 24, more-or-less conforming in configuration to the blade l6 which it is intended to receive, and the essence of novelty in the invention resides in the provision of means for releasably retaining the sheath in position on the knife blade, and will be now described.
This means assumes the form of a substantially specification and L-shaped catch 25, the relatively short arm of which is pivoted by a transverse pin 28 to a pair of transversely spaced bearing blocks 29 provided at the open end of the sheath 24, matters being so arranged that when the sheath is posi-. vtionedon the blade 46, the catch 25 may be swung to its closed position, in which its relatively long arm will frictionally engage the handle [4, while its relatively short arm is engageable with the aforementioned step 22. The long and short arms of the catch 26 are designated by the reference characters 36, 32 respectively in Figure 5, and it is to be noted that while the long arm 30 engages the handle l4, the catch is prevented from accidental or unintentional opening.
However, when it is desired to remove the sheath 24 from the blade [6, the catch 26 is simply swung to its open position indicated by the phantom lines 34, as will be clearly under- 7 stood.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
The combination of a knife including a handle and a blade projecting to one side of said handle to provide a perpendicular step at the junction of the blade and handle, a removable sheath positioned on said blade and having an open end disposed adjacent said handle, a pair of spaced bearing blocks provided integrally at the open end edge of said sheath and protruding beyond said step, a pivot pin mounted in said blocks, and a substantially L-shaped catch including a relatively long arm and a relatively short arm, the short arm of said catch being mounted on said pin between said blocks whereby the catch may be swung from an open position to a closed invention, what is I position wherein the long arm thereof abuts said handle and its short arm abuts said step.
