The ear 23 is frctionally secured between the ears 22 so that the shield and holder may optionally be swung upwardly and rearwardly to an inoperative position. In other respects the holder I3a is similar to the holder I3.

of the holder I3b has a U-shaped member 25 secured to or formed integral therewith which straddles the forward end of the handle IIb and a securing member 26 is extended through the parallel arms of the U-shaped member 25 and may also be extended through the blade I2b of the knife. In practice the securing member 26 may be one of the rivets or pins normally used to secure the handle to the knife blade.
Referring now to Figure 9 there is disclosed another modification of this invention wherein the holder I 3c is provided with clamping arms I9c which are reversed from the clamping arms I9. In other words the clamping arms I9c extend over the top of the shield I IIc. The rear end of the holder I3c includes a base 2'I engaging over the back of the handle II c and secured thereto by a fastening means 28.
In the use and operation of this device, the paring knife may be used in the normal manner for peeling onions or other vegetables and where such vegetables are juicy the shield I4 may be secured to the back of the knife, the clip I8 being slipped over the forward end of the handle II so as to support the holder I3 and the shield I4 along the back of the knife blade l2 with ltheshield disposed in forwardly divergent relation to the edge of the back of the knife, as shown in Figure 2. By having the shield spaced a slight distance from the knife, the latter may be used in thev normal manner for peeling and cutting Preferably the shield is moist or damp when used as the shield when damp or moist more readily catches the fumes and juices that tend to smart the eyes. The provision of the absorbent shield will Apermit the juices to be absorbed and held with respect to the knife, and the shield may be readily cleaned -by inserting the same in water or beneath a This device as hereinbefore described may be xedly secured to a paring knife or may be used as a removable attachment for optional mounting on a knife. Y
I do not mean to confine myself to vthe exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is: l. As an article of manufacture an attachment for a knife havinga handle and a blade, said attachment comprising an absorbent Vshield having substantial length and width, means secured to said shield and extending around the end thereof for supporting said shield lengthwise of and free from said blade, and a split band adapted to be disposed about thehandle, said means being pivotall'y secured to said band, whereby said shield may be adjusted from an operative position lengthwise of said blade to' an inoperative position rearwardly of said blade. I
y Y2. As an article of manufacture an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade, said attachment comprising an absorbent shield having substantial length and width, means secured to said shield and extending around the end thereof for supporting said shield lengthwise of and free from said blade, said means being operatively connected to the handle of the knife.
3. As an article of manufacture an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade, said attachment comprising an absorbent shield having substantial length and width, means secured to said shield and extending around the end thereof for supporting said shield lengthwise of and free from said blade, said means including forwardly divergent clamping bars, said bars being operatively connected to the handle of the knife.
4. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade, said attachment comprising a shield comprised of naturalsponge having substantial length and width, means secured to said shield and extending around an end thereof for supporting said shield lengthwise of but spaced from said blade, and'means connecting said last mentioned means to the handle of the knife.
5. As van article of manufacture, an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade, saidattachment comprising a shield comprised of sponge rubber having substantial length and width, means secured to said shield and extending around an end thereof for supporting said shield lengthwise of but spaced from said blade, and means connecting said last mentioned means to the handle of the knife.
6. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade, said attachment comprising an absorbent shield 'havingsubstantial length and width, means secured.- to said lshield for supporting said shield lengthwise of and free from said blade, said means beingfoperatvely connected to the handle of the knife.
7. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for a knife having a handle and a blade,
