This invention relates broadly to the art of pens and in its more specific aspects it relates to a drawing pen for drawing with ink; and the nature and objects of the invention will be readily recognized and understood by those skilled in the arts to which it relates in the light of the following explanation and detailed description of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I at present believe to be'the preferred embodiments and mechanical expressions of my invention from among various other forms, arrangements, combinations and constructions, of which the invention is capable within the spirit and scope thereof.
It is a fundamental object of my invention to provide a pen for use with ink which is specifically adapted for use in drawing, although it may be satisfactorily and successfully used in various types of work, such as in design work, the drawing of cartoons, musical writing, and even for ordinary writing purposes.
It is an equally important object of this invention to provide a pen of this character which carries within itself a charge of writing ink providing a supply sufficient for a considerable period of time.
A fundamental character and advantage of my invention resides in the provision of a pen of this character which receives its supply of writing ink by mere immersion of the pen within an ink reservoir, or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a drawing pen which receives a charge of writing ink by merely immersing the pen in an ink reservoir, such charge being supplied by the pen solely by the immersion in the ink, the charging of the pen in this manner not requiring any type of mechanical filling devices, parts or the like which is usual in the conventional fountain pen.
And yet another object of my invention is to provide a pen of this character which is strong, durable, and of maximum structural simplicity, and is so designed and constructed that it does not scratch the paper being worked on.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pen of this general character which may be cleaned with facility at frequent intervals without causing deterioration of the pen.
I have devised the pen of this invention so that the charge of ink within the pen will not dry up nor can the charge of ink escape from the pen except at the point thereof, and by this construction I have avoided the risk of spoiling the work being done thereby.
With the foregoing general objects, features Cuba November 21, 1946 1 Claim. (Cl. -1095) and results in view, as well as certain others which will be apparent from the following explanation, the invention consists in certain novel features in design, construction, mounting and combination of elements, as will be more fully and particularly referred to and specified hereinafter. Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the handle of the pen.
Fig. 2 of the drawings is a view in rear elevation of the writing elements of the pen.
Fig. 3 of the drawings is a view in front elevation of the writing elements of the pen.
Fig. 4 is a View in vertical section of the writing elements of the pen.

Referring to the accompanying drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 5 thereof wherein I have used the numeral l to designate the handle of my pen with which the writing member is removably attached, it will be recognized that at the end 3 of the handle I I provide a projecting screw 2 to which the writing element is removably attached.
The writing member which I have designated in its entirety by the numeral 5 is of generally conical form and is provided at its base end with a generally cylindrical prolongation 4 which is internally threaded. The writing member 5 which comprises the body member of the pen and which, as I have hereinbefore pointed out, is of substantially conical configuration is of hollow construction throughout the major portion thereof. However, the point or writing end is solid as will be particularly apparent by consideration of Fig. 4 of the drawings. While I do not wish to limit my invention to the following sizes or relative dimensions of parts of my invention, I have found that the pen functions very satisfactorily when the hollow portion of the body 5 comprises substantially two-thirds of said body portion starting from the base end thereof, and
the solid point or writing end of the body portion 5 comprises approximately one-third of the length of the body portion.
I provide in the wall of the hollow portion of the body 5 an aperture 6 which is preferably though not necessarily of pear shape in general conformity with the outline of the entire body portion 5. I preferably form the aperture 6 in the conical body portion at a point therein above the mid-longitudinal point of said hollow portion, so that the aperture is closer to the base end of 3 the body than to the solid portion thereof. The purpose of this particular disposition of the aperture will become apparent as the description and operation of my invention proceeds.
In the solid point end of the conical body portion 5 I provide an axially extending conduit 1 which provides means for escape or flow of the writing fluid during a writing operation, from the interior of the body 5 to the exterior thereof at the writing point of the pen. The conduit 7 is of small diameter and, as will be evident, is disposed or formed in the body portion to extend from the bottom of the hollow portion of the body of the writing member to the Writing point. The point of the Writing member adjacent to and surrounding the outlet of the conduit 1 is rounded so that the pen will not scratch the it slides thereover in a writing operation.
When the writing member 5 is in operative p sition attached to the handle I, the screw 2 being, threadedly received in the cylindrical projece tion 4, the pen assembly is in condition ready for receiving a charge of writing fluid. ,In order to supply a charge of writing fluid to my pen it is only necessary to submerge or immerse the conical body portion within a supply of writing fluid, the fluid will flow into the hollow portion of the body 5 through the inlet aperture 6 to thereby fill the pen with a charge of writing fluid which is suflicient for a considerable amount of drawing work. When the conical body 5 is charged with, writing fluid the fluid will not flow throu h the conduit 1 until the point is applied to the writing surface, this is due to the small diameter of the conduit 1 and the superficial tension and adherence of liquids. By forming aperture 6 in the upper portion of the hollow body part it will be recognized that a sizable ink charge may be carried by the pen without danger of leaking or spillin I claim:
A pen having a, substantially conical body, an
paper when elongated internally threaded open ended cylindrical projection of reduced diameter relative to said body extending from one end of the body, the other end of the body tapering to a point forming the writing end of the pen, said body being hollow for substantially two-thirds of the length thereof starting at the first mentioned end of the body and the body opening into said cylindrical projection, the writing end of the pen having relative thickness to form the substantially solid one-third portion of the body, the substantially solid portion of the body having an axially disposed conduit therethrough for flow of writing fluid from the hollow portion to the writing end of the body, said body having a constantly unobstructed aperture in the hollow portion thereof formed therein a greater distance from the solid part of the body than from the first mentioned end of the body for flow of writing fluid into the body when the pen is immersed in a body of writing fluid, the aperture being of substantially pear shape, and the remaining walls of the body being imperforate, and a handle for the pen threadedly received in said cylindrical projection.
