Feb. 20, 1951 G. A. SCHWARTZ DECORATIVE WINDOW FIXTURE Filed March 7, 1946 VIII/I IIIIIIA INVENTORY GEO/Q6514. SUI WETL- ATTOIQNEH.
Patented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Y 2,542,714 I F DEC( )RA'I.IV!:. WINDOW George A. Schwartz, Woodmere; N. Y. Application March 7, 1946, Serial No. 652,677
' The present invention relates tov a window valance-and-drape fixture.
The use of ornamental cornices to conceal rods and other curtain and drapery fixtures has become a common feature of interior decoration. These cornices are generally made of telescoping sections to enable them to be used on windows of various widths. These have certain utility which is limited to the purposes indicated. It is often desired to frame or decorate a window along the sides as well .as at the top, either to carry out preconceived decorative schemes or to conceal the plainness or unattractive lines of windows but, so far as I am aware, there is no fixture which enables this to be effectively carried out.v
One of the objects of my invention is to provide for the first time, a window fixture/which will,
dow fixture which will ornament the sides of a' window as well as the top thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window fixture of the character described which will fit a-wide variety of window sizes.
12 cla s. (01. 160-38) Other and further objects and advantages will i be appreciated by those skilled in this art or will be apparent or pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 shows a window fixture embodying the Fig. 5 shows a corner construction of a fixture constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 6 shows a modification of Fig. 5. Figs"? and 8 illustrate other forms of corner medallions.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view of a modified valance arrangement.
Fig. 10 is a section taken Fig. 9.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will beseen thatmy new window fixture comprises Ltwo valance pieces In, a valance medallion or centerpiece H and two drape pieces 12 secured to or integral with the corresponding valance piece l0. These may be made of .any suitable material but are preferably composed of thin plywood or other Fig. 3 applied to a' composition. They ma be suitably colored and may be surface-decorated with painted effects or' decalcomania transfers, if desired.
Each valance piece Ill may have a mitred end to cooperate with the mitred end at the top ofeach drape piece to which it is secured. The valance pieces are suitably mounted or secured in place in any convenient manner (such 'as by brackets): and? are of suchxlength that 'they'l'can be used on windows of various widths without the necessity of being 'cut to exact size or measurement. The space between the confronting ends-iscovered by the ornamental medallion l I, already referred to, andwhich hangs over the valance. piece ends (see'Fig'; 2), due to the bar l3. and: back-piece l4 Wl'liCl'iBXtBl'ldS down almost to the top of the angle piece l5 with'which the valance? pieces 10 and Nb are-provided. .Thebar .lland' backpiece It may be se'curedfltov the medallions as by. nails l3a' or any other suitable means. The: medallion may vary greatly in size and shape and may either harmonize or contrast with the valance pieces depending on the effect to be obtained? The drape pieces l2 are each provided with an angle piece [5 similar to angle piece I5 and brackets I! connect the angle pieces l5 and 16 with the lintel and vertical window jambs l5aT respectively. Drape pieces l2 may extend to the" bottom of the window as shown in full lines, to the fioor as shown in dotted lines or to any inter-- mediate point. The inner edges of the valanceand drape pieces are preferably scalloped or otherwise contoured in a continuous design. The outer edges are preferably plain. At spaced points the angle pieces l6 may, if desired, be provided with supporting blocks l8 for glass shelves l-9 which are designed to receive plants, bric-a-brac, objets dart or other articles.
As shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the medallion Ila" has been shown and described as made up of two mitered pieces, i. v e. the .valance piece I 0 .andthe drape piece I2, but it will be understood that these pieces may be joined by a butt joint or in any other manner to produce an integral structure for each side of the window opening.
If it be desired to utilize the principles of the invention, but still to use a single valance piece, then the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 may be resorted to.
In this case, the valance piece lOb is in one piece and a space exists between the ends of valance piece lb and the upper ends of drape pieces l2b. Corner medallions 2| may be employed in a modified form of the invention as shown. The medallions are provided with a right-angled back piece 22; which constitutes an attaching connection on the rear thereof similar to back piece l4 shown in Fig. 2, and which back piece fits over the corner of the valance piece and' drape pie'ces to cover the space between them, as shown. These corner medallions may take various' shapes" and designs such as the rosette Hunt-Fig; 6,=theshield;
Zlb of Fig. 7 and the heart-shaped piece 2| c'of Fig. 8.
Here, too, the adjacent ends of the valance piece-arid thedrape' pieces are shown as mitered but they'need not be so'constructed since other shaped ends will produce equally good results.
Thefoi'egoing presented as illustrative and not-as limitativ'e as other var'iat'ionsmay berethe -free ends of 1 the valance? portions confront:
ing each other? eachsection comprising a drapery portion" and' a valance" portion secured to the upper end" of the drapery portion, and amedah liondispose'd over' 'the" confronting ended the valance p'ortionsan'd-covering thespace there between.
