Description

TOOL AND HANDLE SET Filed Feb. '7, 1946 3 40 Inventor 40 F/M/vc/s A. 1. uc/A Patented July 22, 1947 UNITED s'rA'rss TOOL. ANDHANDLE SET Francis a. Lucia, Brooklyn, N. Y. v Application February '1, 1946, Serial No. 646,059
2 Claims. ltcl. soc- 35) The invention sufilciently described in the 101- lowing specification that those versed in its art may understand its purposes, its functions and its mode of construction and manufacture, and also shown in the accompanying drawings which are illustrative of at least one form thereof, has for a primary object to provide a tool and handle therefor which cannot become accidentally separated.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing a tool head from flying off the handle.
This invention has for another object to provide a device through means of which a tool head may be permanently secured to a handle against accidental displacement.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may .be resorted to, in actual practiee, if desired.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which: I
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention,
Figure, 2 is a side elevatlonal view oi. the invention, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line l--l of Figure'Z. l
While one embodiment of the invention isillustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that va 'ous changes in construction may be resorted to the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of the device which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while there is stated the primary field of utility of the invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following specification, the same reference char-' acters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which 10 refers to the complete invention which consists of a tool head H which in the instant case consists of a claw hammer, in the passage I 2 of its body l3, the head end H of a handle l5 seats.
Seated across the outer end I6 of the tool and upon the terminal l! of the head l4 and the edges it of said bod I3 is a plate l9 provided with spaced bores 20 and H through which the arms 22 and 23 of an elongated staplelike member 24 project, the head 25 oi which is adapted to seat flush upon the plate l9.
' The handle end it is provided with longitudinal bores 26 and 21 which flare outwardly to meet the inner terminals 28 and 29 of the relatively larger bores 30 and 3i inclining inwardly from the opposite sides 32 an 33 of the handle l5 slightly inwardly of the tool I I.
'I'he terminals 34 and 35 ,of said arm 22 and 23 are screw threaded and said arms are projected through the bores 25 and 21 and into the bores 30 and 3| and have threaded thereon elongated nuts 36 and 31 which seat upon the shoulders 38 and 39 formed by theenlarged bores. After member 24 is drawn as tightly as possible by said nuts the bores 30 and 3| are filled with a plastic 40 and smoothed down as indicated at 4 I.
From the above it will be seen that a handle once attached to the tool head cannot become accidentally displaced.
From the foregoing specification it will become apparent that the invention disclosed will adequately accomplish the functions for which it 5 has been designed and in arr-economical manner and that its simplicity, accuracy and ease of operation are such as to provide a relatively inexpensive device considering what it will accomplish andthat it will find an important place in the art to which it appertains when once placed on the market.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Having now described the invention that which is claimed to be new and desired to be procured by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a tool head having a substantially rectangular-shaped handle recelving bore formed therethrough, a handle for said tool having its upper end reduced to snugly lit the bore in said tool head and formed with seats on its opposite sides engageable with the inner side edges of said tool head, said handle being formed with upwardly converging bores extending inwardly from its opposite sides, said handle being also formed with downwardly diverging bores extending from its outer end to merge with said first-mentioned bores, an apertured cap plate disposed in contact with the end of said handl overlying the adjacent edges of said tool head, a U-shaped staple member positioned to extend through said cap plate and bores having its terminal ends threaded, and securing nuts disposed on said threaded ends receivable in the first mentioned bores in said tool handle.
2. In combination with a tool head having a substantially rectangular-shaped handle receiving bore formed therethrough, a handle for said tool having its upper end reduced to snugly fit the bore in said tool head and formed with seats on its opposite sides engageable with the inner side edges of said tool head, said handle being formed with upwardly converging bores extending inwardly from its opposite sides, said handle being also formed with downwardly diverging bores extending from its outer end to merge with said first-mentioned bores, an apertured cap plate disposed in contact with the end 01' said handle overlying the adjacent edges oi said tool head, a U-shaped staple member adapted to be REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
