' UNITED STATES PATENT "mm:
Application October 11, 1945, Serial No. 621,758
3 Claims.
This invention relates to holders for rolls of toilet paper, and particularly to a holder for a single roll in which the insertion of a fresh roll automatically displaces the tube on which an exhausted roll has been wound.
Toilet paper in roll form is almost universally rolled about a tube and is ordinarily supported in a holder which permits turning of the roll as the paper is removed. The tube remains when the paper is exhausted and ordinarily must be removed before a new roll can be placed.
The primary object of the present invention is:
To provide a roll holder in which the act of inserting a fresh roll automatically releases the tube of an exhausted roll and allows it to drop out, and in which completion of the act of insertion allows the holder to automatically enage and hold the inserted roll.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects are accomplished, and the manner of their accomplishment, will readily be understood from the following specification upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the holder with a roll of paper in place, one-half of the view being in elevation and the opposite half in section on the axial center line of the roll.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder showing the same halves in section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1 along the axial center line of the roll.
Fig. 3 is an additional front view of the holder, half in elevation and half in section, as in Fig. 1, showing insertion of a fresh roll releasing the tube of the used roll.
Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals:
The holder comprises a back I I, to which sides l3, l5 are secured, the side l5 being shown in section in all the views. The facing portions, or
proximate'faces, of the sides are vertically channelled to provide grooves, as the groove ll of the side l5. Disposed in these grooves are floating members I9, each respectively having along its upper portion a downwardly enlarging cam 2|, adapted for engagement and laterally outward displacement by the roll of paper, and a trunnion 23 at its lower end also outwardly displaced by action of the cam.
Each floating member has a closed end slot 25, through which is disposed a pin 21 carried by the side walls of the groove I1, the pin preventing longitudinal movement, and limiting displacement of the member from the groove. Between the back of the member and the bottom of the groove is a leaf-type compression spring 29 which their lower ends the trunnions 23 are separated and the tube 35A of the old roll released and allowed to drop out. Subsequently the inserted roll maintains the separation of the trunnions by the cam engagement, until after the lower portion of the roll is over the trunnions, and
holds them separated by direct engagement, this" holding continuing until the tube 35A of the roll being placed alines with the trunnions and allows spring action to engage them.
It will be understood that the details of construction may be varied from without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it will be distinctly understood that it is not my intention to limit myself to such details except where in any claim they are specifically set out.
I claim:
1. A holder for a roll of toilet paper, including a pair of vertically disposed side members spaced apart to receive the roll therebetween, the proximate faces of said side members being vertically grooved, a pair of floating members respectively disposed in said grooves, each said floating member having a downwardly enlarging cam portion along its upper end portion and a trunnion adjacent its lower end, and intermediate the length of said cam portion being horizontally slotted, a pin disposed through said slot and carried by the side walls of said groove preventing longitudinal movement, and limiting displacement of said member from said groove, and a compression spring disposed between the bottom of said groove and the back of said member.
2. A holder for a roll of toilet paper, including a pair of vertically disposed side members spaced apart to receive the roll therebetween, the proximate faces of said side members being vertically grooved, a pair of floating members respectively disposed in said grooves, each said floating member having a downwardly enlarging cam portion along its upper end portion and a .trunnion adjacent its lower end, means intermediate the length of said cam portion carried by the side walls of said groove preventing longitudinal movement, and limiting displacement of said member from said groove, and a compression spring disposed between the bottom of said groove and. the back of said member.
3. A holder for a roll of toilet paper, including apair of vertically disposed side members spaced apart, to receive the roll therebetween, the proximatefaces of said side members being vertically grooved, a pair of floating members respectively disposed in said grooves, resilient means in said grooves urging outward displacement of said floating members, and means limiting displacement of said members from said grooves, and said floating member having a downwardly enlarging cam portion along its upper end portion and a trunnion adjacent its lower end.
