This invention relates to new and useful improvements in leather tools and more particularly to leather roughing tools.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a tool so designed as to roughen and provide grooves in the opposing faces of pieces of leather whereby cement or the like may fill the grooves so that the pieces of leather will adhere properly and permanently when the same are applied in a hot press machine.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a tool including a plurality of toothed blades that are independently removable from the tool for replacement or sharpening.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hand operated leather roughing tool that tears and grooves pieces of leather to a uniform depth.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a leather roughing tool that is simple and practical in construction, strong and efficient in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of one end of the tool and with parts thereof broken away and shown in section;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l represents an elongated shank of preferably metallic material and so shaped to comfortably receive the hand of a user.
Projecting upwardly from each side of the shank at one end thereof, and preferably integrally formed with the shank, is a pair of spaced parallel side members or walls l2 having their outer edges preferably arcuate or longitudinally curved. Extending transversely between the forward ends of the side members or walls l2 and preferably integrally formed with the shank and side walls I2, is a, rearwardly and upwardly inclined end member or wall M.
The numeral l6 represents a plurality of substantially fiat blades I! having their elongated straight lower edges l8 bearing upon one face of the shank, their rearwardly inclined forward edges hearing against the end member or wall l4 and their forwardly inclined rear edges 2 22 bearing against the forwardly and upwardly inclined edge 24 of a retaining block 26 disposed between the side members or wall l2 and removably secured to the shank by a fastener 28.
At the outer edge of the blades are provided a plurality of bevelled teeth 30 the outer eX- tremities of which lie in an arcuate plane spaced parallel to the plane of the outer edges of the side members.
The blades are spaced parallel to each other by removable Spacer plates 32 so that the teeth will out even uniform depth grooves in the face of leather strips or pieces whereby cement will freely flow into the grooves so that a second piece of leather also roughened will permanently adhere to the first piece when both pieces are pressed together.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A leather roughing tool comprising a shank having three walls projecting from one end thereof including a pair of side walls and an end wall, a plurality of spaced parallel blades between said side walls, one end of said blades bearing against said end wall, a retaining block removably secured to said shank bearing against the free ends of said blades, and spacer plates interposed between adjacent blades.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said side walls are arcuate and said blades are arcuate and having their outer edges toothed.
