Patented Apr. 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,466,783 HOLDER FOR oosME'iio's Rosalia Zumpano sane,- New York, N. Y. Application February 11, 1947 Sr'ialNol 72?,869
This invention is an improvement in holders or casings for cosmetic substances, particularly rouge or face powder and the like; and adapted further to contain a device or implement by which the beautifying preparation can be employed in the required way when needed.
An object of the improvement is to provide a neat and compact holder divided into compartments to receive the cosmetic and the implement by which it is administered to the owners features; and so designed as to include a mirror to facilitate the use thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention are set out in the following specification and the novel features are precisely defined in the appended claim. But this disclosure is by way of example only, and the construction showing the best form of the invention now known to me can be altered in various ways without deviating from the principle of the invention, or omitting any of the essential parts.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment of my invention, showing a casing with a cover in open position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a cosmetic brush holder for insertion into the casing.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of said holder with the brush ready for operation.
Figure 4 shows the brush holder in section.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 1.
The body I of the casing or holder in the form shown on Figures 1 to 5 has a hinged lid or closure 2, with a reflecting surface 3 on the inner face to act as a mirror. In the body just below the upper edge is a horizontal partition 4 and under this partition is a large compartment 5, open at one end of the casing and intended for the lodgment of a brush holder 9 having a flanged head l0, which abuts the exterior of the casing I when the holder or handle 9 is inserted into the compartment 5.
The head III of the member 9 has a, cavity or recess on its inner face to mount therein a cylindrical element or sleeve l l. The end of the element fits this recess tightly to hold against rotation in the head ID, and telescoping into the open outer end is a brush carrier l2 with bristles H in the extremity thereof. The carrier or brush tip I2 is cylindrical over part of its length, but tapers somewhat towards the bristles I3 and adjacent its inner extremity it mounts a cross-pin [4, which projects into a longitudinal slot in the sleeve H. In the head 49 and surrounding the sleeve II is an annular shoulder l6.
1 Claim. (Cl. 132-83") against which abut the'ends of a pair of tubular sections I l and i8, the latter enveloping the former, and the ends thereof engaging the shoulder I6 surrounded and covered by the rim 19 of the head. The inner section has a spiral slot 20 into which the pin I 4 projects but this slot is concealed by the outer section or element I8. The two sections fit together tightly enough, or are otherwise connected so that rotation of the section l8 will turn the section ll. These two sections can be rigidly connected by working a bead 2| around the rim of the section I1, and overturning the rim of the section I8 against said bead.
Therefore, by rotation of the section l8 with the fingers, the slot 20 pushes the brush carrier I2 out or pulls it back. When the bristles are withdrawn into the end of the sleeve H, the brush holder or handle 9 canv be put into the casing as shown in Figure 5. When taken. out, the handle can be manipulated to cause the bristles to project, to be dipped into the contents of the cells tray 4.
The casing l is round, and it flares or expands at one end 22, which is closed by the inside partition 4. This makes an upper compartment for a small round tray 23 to contain a cosmetic preparation. The round holder 9, head 10 and rim I9 are inserted at the opposite end of the casing. The rim part makes a shoulder at the head and always fits the casing I snugly so that the brush and handle will not drop out. The large flaring end 22 is closed by a cover or lid 2, with an inside mirror surface 3. The closure 2 co-operates with a catch consisting of a spring projection 26 with a. projection 21 on the body of the casing to engage a retaining element 28 on the inside of the rim of the closure. The projection 25 is worked by a small protuberance 29, extending through a slot 30 in the rim of the closure. Both the projection 26 and the protuberance 29 are attached to a spring strip 3i on the inside of the rim of the casing, held in place by a rivet 32.
The casing is therefore attractive as well as eflicient. The casing and mirror are held in one hand and the brush handle in the other, for use when desired; and the invention is well calculated to serve its purpose in a most satisfactory manner.
Figure 4 shows the brush carrier l2 with the bristles in its tapered front end separated from the casing, and-includes the cross pin [4 which engages slots I5 and 20.
