Feb. 22, 1949; J. c. MOORE BATTERY- CABLE CLAMP Filed March 5, 1946 Imientor Jkm esf'a zvzizj foaz'e.
Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BATTERY CABLE CLAMP James Calvin Moore, Wichita, Kans.
Application March 5, 1946, Serial No. 652,055
2 Claims.
The invention disclosed in the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings has for its primary object to provide a simple, inexpensive and rapid means by which a cable terminal may be disconnected from a battery post.
This invention has for another object to provide a clamp including a fixed jaw and a hinged jaw and means whereby the jaws will be forced apart as a connecting bolt is unscrewed.
A further object of this invention is to provide a two joint battery post connection comprising a pair of jaws each having a pair of arms and a bolt having a fixed enlargement on its threaded terminal seating between one pair of the arms and a nut threaded therein seating between the other pair of arms whereby upon rotating the bolt in one direction the sets of arms will be forced apart to spread the jaws.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention,
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the invention,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1 and considerably enlarged, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a bolt for activating the clamp jaws.
While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention. of the device which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while there is stated the primary field of utility of the invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which It, refers to the complete invention which consists of a battery cable terminal tube II to the outer end 12 of which is an integral semi-cylindrical jaw I4 and to said end is hinged as at IS the inner end {6 of a movable jaw I! which is also semi-cylindrical. The jaws l4 and H are adapted to be clamped around the post [8 of a battery l9.
Projecting at right angles from the free ends 20 and 2| of each of the jaws l4 and i! are sets of arms 22 and 23, and 24 and 25, respectively. The arms 23, 24and 25 are all provided with aligning bores through which a bolt is projects. This bolt has a fixed enlargement 21' on its end 28, which enlargement seats within the space 25 between arms 22 and 23 of jaw l4 and threaded upon the bolt 26 is a nut 39 which is seated in the space 3| between the arms 24: and 25 of jaw I1 whereby when the bolt is rotated in one direction the jaws will clamp upon the post is and when rotated in an opposite direction they will be pushed apart from one another to release the post completely.
From the above specification it will be obvious that to release the cable 32 from the battery post it will only be necessary to apply a wrench to the head 33 of bolt 26 and turn the same anticlockwise whereby said jaws Id and i! will be instantly sprea'd apart, the member 2i bearing against jaw I4 and the nut 39 pulling the jaw II. From this arrangement there will be no reaction upon the post I8 to ultimately loosen it permitting leakage from the battery and corrosive resulting therefrom.
From the foregoing specification it will become apparent that the invention disclosed will adequately accomplish the functions for which it has been designed and in an economical manner and that its simplicity, accuracy and ease of operation are such as to provide a relatively inexpensive device considering what it will accomplish and that it will find an important place in the art to which it appertains when once placed on the market.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described the invention that which is claimed to be new and desired to be procured by Letters Patent is:
1. A battery cable terminal comprising a fixed jaw and a coacting jaw hinged thereto, one of said jaws having a pair of registering terminal arms, one of which arms is apertured, a bolt having an enlargement on one end thereof inserted between said arms, the other of said jaws having a pair of arms with apertures therein to receive 3 said bolt and having a nut therebetween operatively associated with a threaded portion of said bolt to cause the opening and closing of said jaws when said bolt is turned.
2. A battery terminal for a cable comprising a fixed jaw and a coasting jaw hinged thereto, each of said jaws having a pair of registering terminal arms, a bolt having an enlargement on one end thereof receivable between the arms on the end of one of said jaws, and a nut threadedly associated with said bolt and held between the arms on the end of the other jaw, three of said arms being apertured to receive said bolt, said enlargement being cylindrical and rigidly secured to said bolt, whereby the bolt is permanently associated with the jaws and the jaws are opened and closed by turning said bolt,
