POWDER BOX Filed Sept. 10. 1941 [mam filaam M Israel flioom INVENTORS.

Application September 10, 1941, Serial No. 410,250
4 Claims.
The invention here disclosed relates to holders for face powder and the like.
Objects of the invention are to provide simple and practical means for supporting a powder puff in such a holder, clear of the powder therein but in convenient relation for application of the powder as may be desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support for the puff, which may be adapted and used for holding either a small or large size pufi.
The foregoing and other desirable objects are attained by certain novel features of construction, combinations and relations of parts, all as hereinafter set forth, illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing and broadly covered in the claims.
In the drawing, there is shown one practical commercial embodiment of the invention, but structure may be modified and changed as regards this particular illustration, all within the true intent and broad coverage of the claims.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a powder box incorporating the features of the invention, this View being taken across the center of the holder as on the diametrical line ll of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is an underneath or bottom plan view of the cover, showing the puff support carried thereby and, indicating the movable arm of the latter swung open to support a small size puff.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the movable puff support swung closed, when not required, for supporting a pufi of larger size.
The body of the powder box is here shown in the nature of an open top jar 5, and as having a dome-shaped cover 6, with a dependent annular flange I, to fit down in the mouth of the ar.
The support for the pufi is shown as consisting of a bar 8, of plastic or other suitable material, suspended by angularly bent end portions 8, curved to fit the inside curvature of the cover flange and having at the outside extension lugs 9, curved to fit over the rounded lower edge of the cover flange.
As shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, the puff supporting bar at the hanger portions 8, is of a length to just fit inside the annular flange of the cover at one side of the diametrical center line. This fit preferably is so close as to require a forcing of the curved ends up within the flange of the cover, where they will then be held more or less in wedged engagement, at the one side of the diametrical center of the flange.
To permanently secure the pull supporting bar in its fitted, bridging relation across the underside of the cover, a suitable securing cement may be used between the contacting portions of the bridgepiece and cover flange, substantially as indicated at H].
For a large size puff, such as represented by the broken circular line I l in Fig. 3, the supporting bar, at one side of the cover center may provide adequate support.
For supporting a smaller size puif such as represented at l2, in Fig. 2, the supporting structure may be extended by means of a flat lever or arm i3, pivoted intermediate its ends on the cross bar 8 at It, and adapted when swung open as in Fig. 2, to extend beyond both edges of the fixed supporting bar.
The swinging support l3, which may be of flat sheet material, similar to the bar 8, may have one edge turned down angularly as indicated at IE, to serve as a handle and to serve also as a stop for limiting the swinging movement of the piece in both directions, the end of this angled flngerhold engageable with the edge of the supporting bar to limit swinging movement in the opening direction, Fig. 2, and the flat side of the flngerhold engageable with the edge of the supporting bar to limit movement in the closing direction, with the two bars in substantial alignment. The opening movement is shown limited to positioning the swinging bar substantially at right angles to the supporting bar and thus in the fullest possible extended relation.
The device is particularly simple and inexpensive. The two supporting members may be of flat sheet or strip stock, of plastic, or the like, with the ends of the longer piece shaped as by molding to form hangers which will wedge inside the flange of the cover and the twobars pivoted together as by a simple rivet before the longer bar is pressed and cemented in place in the cover. The extensions or lug portions 9, by engagement with the edge of the cover flange definitely position the supporting bar in :proper relation, bridging the underside of the cover and prevent the bridging piece from being forced inwardly into the covertoo far, as to such an extent as to bend the angled ends 8, so as to impair their supporting or hangerlike properties. The fiat bar structure while providing adequate support, leaves the underside of the puiT uncovered, to a large extent, thus to permit adherent powder to drop oii into the jar.
What is claimed is:
1. A powder box, comprising a cylindrical box structure having a removable cover, said cover having a dependent annular flange at the outer periphery and substantially the full diameter of said cover, said flange fitting down inside the rim of the cylindrical box structure and a flat bar of a length to bridge entirely across the cover within said flange, said bar having upturned ends curved to fit the inside curvature of the cover flange at one side of the diameter of the cover flange, said upturned curved ends having a forced fit within said annular flange and disposed to one side of the flange diameter and whereby said bar will be held wedged in place, dependent from the cover flange and said upturned ends being of a length to support said bar below the edge of the cover flange to thereby provide easy entrance for a powder puffbet-ween said flange and bar.
2. A powder box, comprising a cylindrical box structure having a removable cover, said cover having a dependent annular flange at the outer periphery and substantially the full diameter of said cover, said flange fitting down inside the rim of the cylindrical box structure and a flat bar of a length to bridge entirely across the cover within said flange, said bar having upturned ends curved to flt the inside curvature of the cover flange at one side of the diameter of the cover flange, sai'd' upturned curved ends having a forced fit within said annular flange and disposed to one side of the flange diameter and whereby said bar will be held wedged in place, dependent from the cover flange, said upturned ends having projections at the outside engageabl'e over the lower edge of the cover flange and terminating short of the inner surface of the cylindrical'box structure.
3. 4; A powder box, comprising a cylindrical box structure having a removable cover, said cover having a dependent annular flange at the outer periphery and substantially the full diameter of said cover, said'flange fitting down inside the rim of the cylindrical box structure and a flat" bar ofa length to bridge entirely across the cover within said flange, said bar having upturnedend's curved to fit the inside curvature of the cover flange at one side of'the diameter ofthe cover flange, said upturned cui'ved'ehd's having a forced fit' Withil'i said annular flangeahd disposed to One side of the flange diameter and whereby said bar will'be held wedgedin piece, dependent from the cover flange and an extensime puff suppo'rt' pivoted on said bar and provided with a flngerhold el'igag'eable with the edge of said bar to limit Swinging movement of' 'the extensible support in both directions.
