4 Claims.

This invention relates to novelties such as accessories for hand bags and the like articles, adapted to be carried about the person.

An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described in the form of a container for one or more articles of utility, and having closure members attached to said articles and supporting the same within said containers, whereby said articles may be withdrawn from the container for use upon removing said closure members.

A further object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, a closure member or cover for the container, having means for releasably gripping the article, whereby the latter may be removed from said cover and replaced, the construction of the cover, furthermore, permitting the same to serve as a handle when using said article.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a hand bag having an accessory of the character described, serving as a handle for opening the bag.

Another object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and durable device of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, which may be made in a large variety of decorative shapes, for example, letters of the alphabet, and which shall yet be attractive in appearance, and practical and efficient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, [0 designates a ladys hand bag provided with an accessory I I embodying the invention, here shown for the purpose of illustration only, in the form of a handle for said bag.

The bag I 0 may be of any suitable construction and the body thereof is preferably split at the top, forming portions l2 and i3. Hinged to the top outer edge of bag portion I3, as at I4, is a plate l5 overlying the top edges of the bag portions l2 and I3, and being provided with an edge I5a adapted to snap over ridge I 6 on said bag portion l2 to hold the bag in closed position.

The device I I may be attached to plate I 5 in any suitable manner, and comprises a plate or strip ll fixed to said plate as by a member l8 soldered to said plate and having edges l9 folded over the edges of said strip. The strip I! may be formed with spaced pairs of slots 2| for the purpose hereinafter explained. Attached to said strip l! is an elongated tubular member or container 22 having soldered or otherwise fixed thereto, aligned, longitudinal strips 24 having end portions 25 extending through said pairs of slots 2| and bent inwardly underneath strip ll.

The tubular member 22 is preferably open at the opposite ends 26, 2'! thereof, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, may be tapered. The larger end 21, however, is preferably cylindrical for the purpose hereinafter explained. Fitted over the open ends of member 22 are covers or closure members 28, similar in construction, the cover at one end, however, being larger than the other. Each cover 28 may be in the form of a part spherical hollow member 30, greater, preferably, than a hemisphere. Attached to the bottom of each hollow member 30, as by a rivet 3| is a spring 32 made of sheet metal and having a plurality of radial, curved fingers 33 disposed within said hollow member. Upon fitting each cover onto an end portion of the member 22, the edge 30a of said cover frictionally grips the outer surface of said end portion. The fingers 33 of the spring fit within said end portion and may also frictionally contact the same. The covers are thus removably held on the ends of the tubular member. It will 7 support.

Fitted into the spring 32 is one end 35 of an article of utility 36, such as a pencil,'lipstick or the like article. The spring fingers grip the end 35, and the article 35 is hence removable with the cover 28. The covers 28 may thus serve as handles for the articles 36. The lipstick, for exampleymay be held by the cover 28 when lip rouge is applied to the lips. The portion 2'! is cylindrical to provide a frictional contact with edge 30a of the larger cover 35 as the same is pushed onto said cylindrical portion.

Although the drawing shows a lip-stickfanda pencil within container 22, it will be understood that any suitable articles of utility may be supported by springs 32. Said articles are elongated and disposed within the tubular container'and are removable from the covers 28. V

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent:

1. In a bag, a member mountedthereon provided with a tubularportion'having an open end portion, a hollow cover frictionally fitted over said end portion, a spring havinga plurality of curved fingers fixed to the bottom of saidcover,
