Description

Sept. 4, 1945. E c. E v 2,384,274 'LICENSE PLATE HOLDER Filed Dec. 10, 1942 INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 4, 1945 LICENSE PLATE HOLDER (lalvin Bean, Sykesville, Pa.
Application December 10,194,2,s vant.468,450 I (o1. 40-10) 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in card holders, and more particularly in card holders employed for displaying hunting licenses or other advertising or identifying indicia, and, it is among the objects thereof to provide a card holder having double display windows of a transparent ma terial joined by a flexible material such as leather, and having a slotted opening for the insertion of the display card, with a sealing flap for holding the display material in place.
I am aware that heretofore different forms of display card holders, and'particularly such for use as license plate holders, have been manufactured, such devices being provided with attaching means for securing them to a garment of the wearer, and such devices serve their purpose mainly because it is necessary to expose only one side of the holder.
Because of the need for carrying. the license bearing the signature ofthe licensee in addition to the license tag, the prior art devices require that the licensee remove the license holder, or remove his coat to which it is attached, to gain access to the license.
In accordance with the present invention, the license holder is viewable from two sides so that anyone desiring to inspect both the license tag and written license can do so by merely turning up the end of the holder. The double display window holder hereinafter described is practical because of its construction for Sealing the display material therein, which will become more evident by reference to the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
Fig. l is a top plan view of a display holder embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 an edge elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 a rear elevational view of the display holder;
Fig. 4 a vertical section taken along the line 4-4, Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 a cross-section taken along the line 55, Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 a cross section similar to Fig. 5 showing the position of a sealer flap when a display card is inserted in the holder.
As shown in the drawing, the holder consists of a pair of square or rectangular shaped pieces of flexible material such as leather designated by the reference numerals I and 2. Windows 3 and 4 of transparent material are attached to the leather frame members I and 2 by sewing or cementing them thereon. The holder, as shown in the drawing, is provided with a pair of snap buttons 5 by which it may be attached to the garment of the user, and the back of the holder is provided with a slit 6 at one side for the insertion of the license tag or other display material therein.
It is to be noted from Fig. 3 of the drawing that the slit is well within the margin of the holder andis in length somewhat of greater dimension than the height of the window 4. If a license tag or other display card were inserted in the slit 6 to fill the space covered by the windows 3 and 4, it could work itself out of the holder.
To overcome this difliculty, a flexible flap 1 is provided below the insert slit 6. The flap may be a piece of leather or other suitable material, and is of substantially the length of the insert slit 6. It is assembled with the edge pieces of the holder and joined integrally therewith by sewing along the line 6a.
To insert the license tag or other card in the holder, the flap 1 is drawn through the slit 6 and folded upward as shown in Fig. 6. The card is then inserted between the window elements by simply lifting the innerpiece Ia of the leather adjacent the slot. The flap 1 can be reinserted into the slit of the holder and covers a substantial portion of the edge of the card as hown in Fig. 5.
The holder, when closed, holds the flap 1 against displacement by the display card or license tag under all conditions, such as a license tag holder might :be subject to, as it is impossible for the card or tag to work out of the flap 1 because the fiap is held in place :by the pressure of the leather on the side Id of the slit adjacent the display window.
The device, of course, is suited to the insertion of more than one display tag. Thus, one may be turned face up to the outside of the holder when it is attached to the coat or garment of the' wearer, and the signed license may be turned with the signature exposed through the window on the opposite side of the license tag.
The upper portion of the leather holder is of such width as to freely hinge when the holder is lifted to inspect the license through the inner window. It is, therefore, unnecessary to remove the holder from the garment to inspect both sides of the display windows,
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
Iclaim: 1. A display holder comprising a pair of rectangular cover members joined around their outer periphery to form a flat pocket, each of said members being cut out to form a window, flexible transparent material placed beneath said windows and attached to said cover members, one of said cover members having a slit on one side of the flexible window for receiving a display card inserted-thereinto be visible through one of said windows, and a flexible-flap of substantially .the length of said slit disposed between said cover members and secured to the holder at the outer;
edge with its free end extending beneath the slit and toward the window to overlap the edge of the card insert a substantial distance.
2. A flexible license plate holder comprising a pair of flexible sheets constituting cover members having cut-out windows and having a wider margin above said windows than the remaining portion of the cover members, attaching means secured to the wide margin portion for attachment of the holder to the wearing apparel of the user, said holder having a sheet of flexible transparent material secured in each window to seal the interior to form a flat pocket and a slit on one side of one window extending the full height of the window for insertin the license tag to be visible through one window and for inserting the license'with the licensees signature to be visible through the other of said windows, and a flexible flap disposed between said sheets secured at one edge of the holder and extending beneath the slit'to overlap the edge of the license tag and license to prevent their accidental displacement from the license holder.
