1 Claim. (Cl. 12d-38) This invention relates to mechanical pencils and particularly to eraser caps therefor.
This invention has for its salient object to provide an improved eraser cap construction andk mounting'so designed that the cap can be made of non-yieldable materials, such as a suitable plastic, and is so arranged that it can bereversed and Will be effectively held on the pencil body or barrel in either position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable and reversible eraser cap so constructed that it will be firmly supported in the pencil when inserted in the 'barrel both whenA the eraser is exposed for use and is concealed in the barrel. l
Another object of the invention is to provide an eraser lcap so constructed that the eraser will be firmly held in the cap and can be used when the eraser cap is removed from the pencil body or barrel.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in eonnection with the drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal elevation, partly in section, of a mechanical pencil having an eraser f is shown a mechanical pencil comprising a barrel I0 vhaving a tip Il and having a tapered end as shown at I2.
The eraser cap comprises a member I5 having a. recess I6 for receiving the eraser I1. The member.l5 has Va tapered surface I8 on the portion provided with the recess IB and also has a correspondingly tapered surface I9 at the opposite end thereof. The tapered surfaces I8 and I9 are so dimensioned as to fit tightly in the tapered surface I2 of the barrel I0 so `as to hold the cap in the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the eraser is disposed .inside the barrel or in the position shown in Fig. 2 in which the eraser is disposed outside the barrel or in a position for use. Al-
though a straight line or conical taper is illustrated, it should be understood that the tapered surfaces may be slightly curved, if desired, and
`the term tapered is intended to embrace such a, construction. The tapered surface I9 may, if desired, be provided with annular grooves 20 which have an ornamental effect when the cap is positioned as shown in Fig. 1 and enhance l the gripping effect when the cap is reversed as shown in Fig. 2.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claim.
What I claimis:
In a pencil, a barrel having an elongated tapered recess in one end and an eraser holder hav.. ing an elongated recess at one end to receive an eraser, and having its outer surface tapered from its transverse median line outwardly to opposite ends, the tapered ends of the eraser holder being dimensioned similarly to the taper ofthe recess in the barrel te fit tightly in the tapered recessy
