'I'he invention relates to packages or wrappers for sewing needles and has for its object to provide a construction of needle package and more particularly a wrapper or envelope for sewing needles in which the wrapper proper is made of a single folded sheet of material such as paper having one or more apertures in one face thereof through which the needles, when packaged, are visible. The wrapper, in accordance with my invention, is provided with a slidable strip of transparent material overlying the packaged needles when the wrapper is closed, so as to permit the sliding of such strip of transparent material longitudinally along the inner face of the wrapper to uncover the packaged needles and to facilitate the withdrawal or removal of the needles individually, when the strip of transparent material may again be slid back into its needle covering position and the wrapper enfolded to maintain the packaged needles in proper position within the wrapper.

In my novel construction of needle packages, utilize a single sheet of material, such as paper, of substantially elongated form, having two longitudinal strips folded along the edges of the sheet, part of the sheet constituting a backing and a part a front face, the latter being preferably provided with a pair of apertures, the portion of the sheet which is to constitute the front of the package being preferably folded over the back and provided with an end flap having a tab adapted to be tucked through a transverse slit provided at an appropriate point in the back portion of the sheet.

In its broadest aspect, the novelty of my improved needle package comprises the provision of a sheet of transparent material such as Cellophane, which is slidably mounted within the folded-over edges of the sheet constituting the package, so as to be readily movable from a position in which it overlies the battery of needles to a position in which the needles are uncovered, the folded-over flaps constituting tracks for the sliding movement of the transparent sheet, and retaining such transparent sheet within the package at all times, so that when the needles are withdrawn and removed from the package one by one, the transparent covering sheet may be drawn back to its position overlying the needles.

A specific embodiment of my novel needle package is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a plan view of a blank of sheet material, such as paper, from which the wrapper is to be formed;

Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which similar reference characters identify similar `parts in the several views, the wrapper for the needle package constructed in accordance with my invention is constituted of a blank Il] 0f sheet material, such as paper, of elongated form, the longitudinal edges II and I2 of which are turned inwardly so as to overlie the longitudinal edge portions of the body of the sheet throughout the length thereof. The blank is then provided with score lines I3 and I4 forming a backing part I5 25 and a face part It, respectively, and a ap Il. The flap is provided with a tab I8 extending upwardly from the central portion thereof, which tab is adapted, when the wrapper is folded, as hereinafter described, to be inserted into the slit I9 provided in the backing portion I5. The front portion I6 is preferably provided with a pair of substantially rectangular apertures 20 and 2 l Positioned upon the backing portion I5 and secured thereon in any suitable manner, for instance by an adhesive, is a support 22 of paper, felt or similar suitable material, having a horizontal pocket formed by a bridge member 23 within which pocket are supported a battery of needles 24 in conventional manner. superimposed upon the support, with its battery of needles, and so as to have the same slidable within the tracks formed by the folded-over longitudinal edges of the wrapper, is a strip 25 of transparent sheet material such as Cellophane, of sucient width to be capable of sliding freely within the wrapper along the tracks formedby the folded-over edges and of a length substantially equal to the length of each of the back and front panels I5 and I6.

The complete needle package, in its folded condition, is illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the former showing a front view thereof and the latter the back. When it is desired to remove one or more of the battery of needles 24, the Wrapper is opened by disengaging the tab I8 from the slot I9 and un- 55 Cil folding the ap ll and the two parts l5 and i6. After this operation, the package will assume the condition shown in Fig. 2, in which the strip of Cellophane 25 overlies the battery of needles. Such strip may then be slid upwardly to an extent sufficient to uncover at least a part of the battery of needles, preferably the portion thereof which includes the heads and adjacent portions of the needles. A single needle or a plurality of needles may then be removed from the battery and the strip of Cellophane may then be slid back to its position in which it overlies the remaining needles. This entire operation is accomplished with ease and facility and with an assurance that no disturbance of the battery of needles will take place. The package may then again be folded as hereinabove indicated and made ready for storage, and the removal of other needles from the battery as required.

It will be noted that by means of my novel construction of needle package, the needles are protected from unintentional separation and yet are at all times visible through the apertures 20 and 2l forming windows, so that the user has before her at all times, without necessity of unfolding the package, a clear indication of the remaining number of needles, their type, and size. My novel needle package, besides facilitating the removal of the needles one by one, is effective to provide a neat and attractive looking article of commerce and protects the package of needles from outside influences such as moisture and dust.

While I have described a particular embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that various changes may be made therein, particularly in the size, configuration, and disposition of the various elements thereof, for instance, of the windows, tab, folded edges, etc., without departing' from my invention.

I claim:

l. A needle package comprising an elongated strip of iiexible sheet material folded along transverse score lines to form a back portion and a front portion, and having its two parallel longitudinal' edge portions folded over throughout the length of said strip to provide guideways, a support secured to said back portion and carrying a battery of needles and a strip of transparent material positioned for sliding movement within the guideways formed by the folded-over longitudinal edges of the elongated strip, whereby such transparent strip may be slid from a position overlying the battery of needles to a position in which at least a portion of such needles is uncovered.

2. A needle package comprising an elongated strip of flexible sheet material having its two parallel longitudinal edge portions folded over throughout the strip to provide guideways and having a score line extending transversely of the elongated strip dividing the strip into a back face and a front face, a support secured to said back face and carrying a battery of needles, means for securing the back and front faces together in overlying position so as to form a closed wrapper of the elongated strip, and a strip of transparent material positioned for sliding movement within the guideways formed by the folded-over longitudinal edges of the elongated strip, whereby such transparent strip may be slid from a position overlying the battery of needles to a position in which at least a portion of such needles is uncovered.

A needle package comprising an elongated strip of flexible sheet material having its two parallel longitudinal edge portions folded over throughout the strip to provide guideways and having a pair of score lines extending transversely of the elongated strip dividing the strip into a back face, a front face, and a flap extending from the front face, a tab extending from the flap, the back face having a horizontally disposed slit adapted to receive said tab when the elongated strip is folded upon said score lines, a support sesured to said back face and carrying a battery of needles, and a strip of transparent material of the approximate length of one of said faces positioned for sliding movement within the guideways formed by the folded-over longitudinal edges of the elongated strip, whereby such transparent strip may be slid from a position overlying the battery of needles to a position in which at least a portion of such needles is uncovered.

4. A needle package comprising an elongated strip of flexible sheet material having its two parallel longitudinal edge portions folded over throughout the strip to provide guideways and having a pair of score lines extending transversely of the elongated strip dividing the strip into a back face, a front face, and a flap extending from the front face, the front face having a plurality of apertures therein, a tab extending from the flap, the back face having a horizontally disposed slit adapted to receive said tab when the elongated strip is folded upon said score lines, a support secured to said back face in carrying a battery of needles, and an elongated strip of transparent material, of the approximate length of one of said faces and slightly narrower than said faces, positioned for sliding movement within the guideways formed by the folded-over longitudinal edges of the elongated strip, whereby such transparent strip may be slid from a position overlying the battery of needles to a position in which at least a portion of such needles is uncovered.

5. A needle package comprising an elongated strip of flexible sheet material having its twov parallel longitudinal edge portions folded over throughout the length of said strip to provide guideways and having a pair of score lines extending transversely of the elongated Strip dividing the strip into a back face, a front face, and a flap extending from the front face, the front face having a plurality of apertures therein, a tab extending from the flap, the back face having a horizontally disposed slit adapted to receive said tab when the elongated strip is folded upon said score lines, a support secured to said back face and carrying a battery of needles and an elongated flat strip of transparent material of the approximate length of one of said faces and slightly narrower than said faces positioned for sliding movement within the guideways formed by the two foldedover parallel longitudinal edge portions of the elongated strip whereby when said package is in the open position the back face, front face and flap lie substantially in one plane and the transparent strip may be slid from the position in which such needles are covered to a position where such needles may be uncovered to any extent or the transparent strip completely slid out of said guideways.
