D. S. LOGAN DISPLAY BOX Filed Nov. 3, 1938 Patented Oct. 22, 1940 PATENT orrlce DISPLAY Box Dougald S. Logan, Pawtucket, R. I., assignor to .Shaw Paper Box Company,.pa corporation of 1 Rhode Island Application November 3, 193's, Serial o. 238,509
3Claims. (01.206544) This invention relates to a display box and has for one of its objects to provide an attractive display box for the merchandise contained therein,
7 whereby the box may be displayed at an angle to,
or inclined, with referenceto the supporting surface upon which the box may rest.
Another object of the invention is to provide a display box by which the angle of incline of the merchandise container may be varied after the box 'is opened, whereby merchandise which may be eifectively displayed at a steeper angle may be adjusted to such angle or to harmonize with the general surrounding or environment in which the display of the box may be had.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be morefully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the display box in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box in open position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective to a difierent incline;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the support member and body of the box alone or separate from the cover;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a different relative position of the body and support members;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cover alone; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the relative position of the parts for assembly.
It isfrequently desirable that merchandise be 1 displayed in the box in which it is housed upon opening the cover of the box, and in order that this display may be more efiectiveI have arranged that the body of the box would be inclined with reference to the supporting surface for the box; and, as it may frequently be desired to support the merchandise at a difierent angle than that to which the body may be inclined upon the opening of the cover, I have arranged that the angle or incline of the body of the box be adjusted such, for instance, as by merely sliding the support member along the cover; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the drawing, invention consists essentially of a body member ID consisting of a bottom wall ll, opposite side walls I2l2 and l3-I3' which extend up from the bottom H view of the box adjusted and form a tray-like body, the opposite walls I2l2' and l3l3' being generally at right angles to each other and atright angles to the bottom II. A cover designated generally I4 consists of a top wall I5 l'il1'; Iii-l6 of distances apart to telescope over and closely fit the sidewalls I2|2' and |3-I3' respectively of the body of the box.
A band-like support member l8 consists of opposite walls I 9-19 and 2020' in rectangular formation, forming substantially a fence-like enhave passed through it the cover l9l9 are substantially the distance apart of the depth of the wall ll-ll' and I 6| 6, while the walls 2020 are a distance apart a little greater than the scopically receive these walls as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 while providing that the band-like support member I8 may he slid along the cover member M from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown'in Fig. 3 when the cover is in open position.
This support member I8 is hinged to the body member ID by a hinge 2! Which is secured along the wall l9 and to the under surface of the bottom wall I I as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5. A tab or handle 22 may be secured to the body ID to assist in opening the same. The support member for the body may be utilized alone in the position parts is'such that when the support member telescopes the cover, and its lower edge 23 is even with the side wall H, the body may then be swung to its closed position within the cover as and opposite side walls walls l6 l6 so as to telein Fig. 4 by dissembling the support memthe depth of the cover is such as to accommodate I the portion 24 of the hinge when ment, however, would enable the support to be slid along the cover to various positions'in order that the body might swing to closed position into the cover with a manipulation of the sliding supthe body which extends beyond in this relation. This arrangewalls to telescope over for the contrast with the remainder of the box and provide a desirable modernistic type of ornamentatio-n therefor, while the cover also may be suitably ornamented on its inner surface to assist in the attractive display of the box.
The ioregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the-privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being de-, lined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a box a body member having a bottom wall and upstanding side walls, a cover member having a top Wall and downwardly extending side the side walls of said body member, and a member of band-like formation extending about the top wall, opposite side walls and across the opening between said opposite side walls and slidable to different positions along said cover member, and means hingedly connecting and incline the body on the one edge of the band member tosaid body member.
2. In a box a body member having a bottom wall and upstanding side walls, a cover member having a top wall and downwardly extending side walls to telescope over the side walls of said body member, and a member of band-like formation extending about the top wall, opposite side walls and across the opening between said opposite side walls and slidable to different positions along said cover member, and means hingedly connecting one edge of the band member to the bottom of said body member at a point on the body member spaced from one edge of the bottom wall.
3. In a box, a body member and a cover member to fit together, said cover having a top wall and opposite side walls, a supporting member comprising a rectangular fence-like open ended enclosure encircling and slidably engaging said top wall and one set of opposite side walls of the cover and adapted to be positioned at different heights along said cover, said body having a portion extending intojsaidcover and having its bottom wall hingedto th iupper edge of the support along a line which is spaced from the edge of said body portion, 'said' supporting member arranged to embrace both bodyand cover members when the partsarein closed position or to permit the cover to beopened to receive a portionof the body support member.
