Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE L. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette cases, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby opening of the lid will effect raising of the cigarettes up within and above the top of the case so as to allow the cigarettes to more easily and conveniently be removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide means incident to the raising means for partitioning the interior of the case so as to hold the cigarettes in divisions therein. The invention further aims to provide simple and economical means for eifecting the objects set forth, and to also provide means which can be easily and positively operated.

Further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following specification.

In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a case 1 of any preferred form is employed having a cover 2, connected thereto 'by a spring hinge 3, all of which are of common form in the art.

The raising device consists of a platform or false bottom 4: on which the cigarettes rest, and a rod or wire member of substantially P-shape. The lower end 5 of the wire is soldered or otherwise rigidly se cured to the under face of the false bottom l, the sides 6 and 7 thereof embracing oppo-' site sides of the false bottom 4:, the upper end portion 8 of side 6 being extended inwardly at right angles and secured to the side 7. This portion 8 of the wire constitutes a partition dividing the cigarettes into two divisions as will be apparent from Fig. 3, preventing same from. rubbing against one another and also serving to ass1st in holdingthe cigarettes upright. The side or leg 7 of the wire is extended upwardly to a point just below the hinge 3, when the parts are in closed position, and the cover has an arm 9 secured at one end to the inner face of the rear side wall thereof, while the opposite end of the arm is offset and pivoted at 10 to the upper end of the extension of leg 7. If desired, one or more coil springs 11 may be employed and are disposed be tween the bottom 12 of the case and the false bottom 4, the sprin being employed so as to urge the false iiottom upwardly when the cover 2 is released, a latch 2 of any form being employed to hold the cover closed.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the latch 2 is released, the cover will be urged to its open position both by virtue of the spring hinge 3 and the spring or springs 11, thereby effecting raising of the false bottom, and the consequent projection of the cigarettes above the top end of the case. However, the invention is operative if a hinge other than a spring type of hinge is employed and likewise if the spring or springs 11 are eliminated, since it will be apparent that with such springs eliminated, both in the instance of the hinge and the springs 11, the user, following release of the latch 2 simply lifts the cover, and since the latter has the arm 9 rigidly secured thereto, it will be apparent that such arm will efiect raising of the extens on 7 of the lifting device and consequent raislng of the platform or false bottom 4 and the aforementioned projection of'the cigarettesabove the top end of the case. The elimination of all springs is of advantage where a very cheap case is to be produced embodying the invention otherwise. The limitlng move ment of the cover in its opened posltion will obviously also limit the extent of upward movement of the false bottom, regardless of whether springs are or are not employed The partition forming member 8 is disposed at a point approximately centrai of the depth of the case so as to separate the cigarettes by engaging same about midway of their lengths.

Having thus described my inventlon, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a cigarette case having a hinged cover, a false bottom, a member having a lower partengaged beneath the bottom and secured theretoand having upwardly extending side members the outer of which is turned at right angles and secured to the inner member to form a partition for dividing the cigarettes into two divisions, the inner member extending upwardly to a point below the hinge of the cover in closed position of the latter, a spring seating on the bottom of the case and against the under face of the false bottom for normally urging the latter upwardly, and an arm rigidly secured at one end to the cover and having its other end ofi'set and pivoted to the upper end of the extension of said inner side 15 member.
