2 Claims. (Cl. 283-4) My invention relates to an improvement in book reference calendars wherein it isdesired to provide a reference book embodying a calendar which may be detached if desired at the end of the year.

It has been recognized that for many purposes, a reference book is exceedingly helpful in combination with a calendar so that certaindata may be recorded in conjunction with the calendar and may be retained at the end of the year. It is usually not necessary to retain the entire calendar as the indicia printed upon the calendar is ordinarily not of interest at a later date, but it is often desired to retain a diary of events or certain facts which occur on certain dates during the year. Furthermore, if the book is printed with household information, recipes, or the like, it is usually desired to retain this book for reference at a later date.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a simple type of book which may either be printed or may be designed to contain Written indicia and which embodies in a particular manner a calendar. When the book is linished, the calendar is in folded form, and the device simulates the appearance of a common type of book or magazine. When the calendar is used, hcwever, the calendar portion is unfolded from-within the body of the book and depends below the body. When in this position,-my device provides an attractive display calendar.

It is a feature of my invention that the book may be printed with a budget system arrangement so that the income of the family may be budgeted and a denite record kept of expenditures. The book may also be printed to provide a diary or a record of appointments or engagements during the year. The book may also be printed with household hints, recipes, or other information useful in the household or in an office in which the calendar is desired for use.

It is a feature of the present invention that the calendar pad may be removably pivotally secured to one of the cover sheets of the book in such a manner that when the calendar is hung upon the wall the various leaves of the book are interposed between the sheet supporting the calendar pad and the supportingwall. By this construction the book sheets may be held in iiatl condition and the tendency for the various sheets of the book to curl at the corners and present an unsightly appearance is obviated.

It is a feature of my invention that the rear cover page of the book may in preferred form be used to support the calendar pad. This construction has several advantages. It should first be noted that by having the calendar pad hinged to the rear cover sheet, the pages at the front of the book are not bulged outwardly sufliciently to be unsightly when the book and calendar are in folded condition. Furthermore, by thisconstruction the front of the bookl may be printed to simulate a common book or magazine, while 'at the same time, the rear surface of `the book may be printed with a calendar display suitable vto provide an attractive appearance throughout the year when suspended upon a wall. In the third place, this construction holds the front book or magazine cover tightly against the surface of the wall, thus preventing this surface from becoming soiled or damaged throughout the year. At the end of the year the front surface of the book is unmarred and unsoiled and may be used as a reference book.

An added feature of my invention resides in the provision of a calendar having a, series of sheets pivotally connected along 'one side edge and having a central opening in the rear sheet of the series-next to the wall through which a supporting means may extend. The remaining sheets of the series are provided with a series of transverse vslots one end of which registers with the opening in the rear. sheets and which extend away from the hinged edge of the sheets. Thus a supporting means may extend through all of the sheets and project outwardly from the front sheet without interfering with the turningvof the various sheets. The slot in the sheets permits the sheets in front of the rear sheet to be pivoted with respect to the rear sheet while the .book is'being supported by a nail or the like without injury to the sheets. i

These and other objects and novel featuresof my invention will Ibe more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.

The cover sheet I I includes a front .cover mem-V ber I4 and a rear cover member I5. The sheets I are of substantially the same size as the front cover member I4. The Yrear cover I5 is longer than the remaining sheets Ill and the front cover I4 to form a downwardly projecting tab 0r portion I6. This extended portion Itis connected to the remaining portion of the rear cover sheet I5 along a perforatedline I1. This perforated line I1 preferably is in substantial alignment with the lower edges of the remaining sheets I0 and the front cover sheet-I4, so that when thetab or projecting portion I5 is torn 01T along the perforated line all of the sheets are of the same' size.

A calendar pad I9 including a series of sheets each bearing calendar indicia 2| is attached to the projecting tab I6 on the rear cover sheet f .I5. This pad may be attached in any suitable manner as by staples 22. The calendar pad I9 is thus rmly attached to the projecting portion I6 which is removably secured to the .lower edge of the rear sheet I5 of the book. i

In folded form the projecting tab I6 is folded upwardly over the inner surface of the rear cover sheet I5 along the perforated line I1 so as to be contained within the confines of the vari-ous sheets I0. When it is desired to use the calendar, the projecting tab I6 is unfoldedand permitted to vdrop into the position illustrated in Figures 1,

2, and 6. When in this position, the calendar pad is in display position, and the calendar indicia may be readily seen. Y

The front cover sheet I4 is provided with a pictorial illustration indicated by the reference numeral 23 which simulates in appearance a book, pamphlet, or magazine. The rear cover sheet I5 is provided on its exterior surface with a pictorial illustration 24 which cooperates with the calendar pad to form an attractive calendar display. It is obvious that when the calendar is being used, the rear cover sheet of the book is visible rather than the front cover sheet I4 thereof.

In order that the calendar may be suspended by means of a nail 25 or other suitable supporting means upon a wall such as indicated at 26 in Figure 6, I provide an opening 21 in the front cover sheet I4 which is of sucient size to permit the head of the nail or other attaching means A25 to extend therethrough. Each of the sheets III overlying the front cover is providedwith an elongated slot 29, one end of which extends into registry with the opening 21 and which extends transversely away from the binding edge I2. This construction permits the calendar to bel supported with the supporting means extending through a relatively small aperture in the front cover sheet which holds the supporting means 25 centrally located with respect to the book calendar- A. The elongated slots 29 in the remaining sheets permit the leaves of the book as well as the rear cover sheet I5 to be pivoted into open position without danger of the various sheets catching upon the supporting means 25 and becoming torn. It is obvious that it would be always necessary to remove the calendar from the supporting Vmeans 25 to open the book unless slotssuch as 29 were provided.

When the calendar is sent out the calendar pad I9 upon the tab I6 is folded into the position illustrated in Figures 3, 4, and 5 of the drawing. When in this position my structure resembles a book or magazine. Any desired type of indicia may be printed upon the various sheets I0 and upon the inner surface of the cover sheet Il. Budget information or a diary or appointment calendar may be printed thereupon, -or the pages may contain household hints or information, office suggestions, or recipes or the like.

The person receiving the calendar folds the Vcalendar pad downwardly into the position ndicated in Figures 1, 2, and 6 of the drawing and hangs the same upon a suitable support 25 with the rear cover sheet I5 outermost providing an attractive calendar display. The various sheets may be opened at vany time because of the arrangement of the aperture 21 and the slots 29. At the end of the year, the depending tab I6 and the' calendar pad securedthereto may be torn off along the -perforated line I1 and the book portion of the device may be retained for future use. With this construction it will be noted that the leaves II) of the book and the front cover sheet I4 are interposed between the rear cover sheet II containing the depending tab IE and the surface of the wall 26, This arrangement obviates the danger of having the various sheets I0 and the cover sheet I4 curling at the edges and presenting an unsightly appearance. Furthermore, it preserves the appearance of the front of the book so that the book will 'be as attractive as ever at the end of the year.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction of my calendar; and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that this is only illustrative of a means of carrying out my invention, and that obvious changes may .be made within the 'scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. For use with a calendar, a series of sheets, means connecting said sheets along a line to fold as a book, one outer sheet having a small aperture and the other sheets having a slot aligned with said aperture and transverse to said fold line.

2. In a calendar, a series of sheets, a back and front cover, means connecting the sheets and covers along a line to fold as a book, the front cover having a small aperture, and the back cover and the sheets having a slot aligned with the aperture and transverse to the fold line, a foldable tab on Said back cover, and a calendar pad on said foldable tab, said tab being on the rear surface of said tab in unfolded position.
