9/6 g /Q/F/ 1NVENT0R= i PIETRO FORCELLA MMM AT'TORNEY Patented Aug. so, 193s 2,128,770 RAIL JOINT Y Pietro Forcella, Rome, Italy Application August 5, 1936, Serial No. 94,313 In Italy August 8, 1935 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a method of jointing rails by means of cheeks and lateral weld-blocks.
It is already known to provide cheeks for this purpose which are apertured for receiving welding material.
According to this invention the cheek is apertured at the connecting zone of the ange with the web of the rails and is therefore of angular form to permit welding by means of weld-blocks simultaneously of the portions of the flanges and webs of the contacting rails uncovered by said angular opening. By Weld-block I referto a quantity or mass of .welding material located in the zone subjected to shearing stresses and having a sufficient cross sectional area to resist external stresses; said weld-blocks are appliedy to the surface of the members to be joined and against the edges opposed to the junction plane of large openings or recesses formed in the cheek.
With this arrangement it is possible to damp by one opening and the same blocks simultaneously the lateral spreading of the anges and the vertical spreading of the webs of the rail. The. top of the cheek may be bifurcated, the branches being adjacent to the heads of the rails to be jointed and enclosing weld-blocks.
This arrangement obviatesY any Ybutt Welding either of the flange or web of the rail.
The accompanying drawing shows, byv way of example, a construction of the joint embodying a spliced cheek according to this invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View.
Figure 2 is a side view and Figure 3 is a section on line III-III of Fig. 2. Referring to the drawing, l and 2 denote the adjacent ends of two usual tramway rails to be jointed. The ends of the rails are brought close to each other and connected by means of the cheeks 3, adhering to the lateral faces of the rails and formed at their top edge with branches 4 laterally embracing the rail head.
The cheek 3 is formed below with a flange 5 which is superposed to the rail flanges and has in turn -a flangeia, laterally adjacent to the rail flanges. In the connecting zone between the body 3 of the cheek and flange 5 a more or' less elongated opening 6 is formed which leaves uncovered a flange portion and a web portion of the adjacent rail ends.
Between the branches 4 weld-blocks 1 are provided at the sides of the rail heads and on the inner sides of theY branches; these weld-blocks can be either separate from one another or integral in the plane 8 of the rail joint; As shown (ci. zas-164) in Fig. 3 the left-hand cheek is not in contact with the lower portion of the rail heads. Therefore with the weld-blocks l insert welds Il) are formed underneath the heads. A similar arrangement may be employed also for the right` cheek. In the angular opening 6 weld-blocks 9 are fitted which are adapted to connect together the surrounding Walls of the opening with flange and web portions adjacent to the rails.
With the arrangement of the angular opening 6 according to this invention, theV weld-blocks 9 resist the spreading both of the rail flanges in the horizontal plane and of the rail webs; in the vertical plane. When the joint is submitted to exceptionally high loads, besides the opening 9 further openings may be provided coaxial thereto and a block-weld fork may beprovided on the lower edge of thercheeks.
In special cases the weld-blocks between the .branches and in the angular openings instead of being separate may be made integral as stated above.
The cheeks are held in place safely enough by the weld-blocks alone, or tie bolts may be provided as Vin ordinary sh-p-lates.
It will be obvious that the form and constructive details of' the joint may vary according to requirements without departing from the scope of this invention.
What I claim is: 1. A1 rail joint comprising a pair of metal cheek plates adhering to the lateral faces of the rails to be joined and conforming to the shape of the sides of the heads and Webs as well asv the under sides of the heads and the top sides of the flanges of said rails, each of said cheek plates having a wide opening located wholly within the edges of the cheek plates and extending adistance up on the webs and down upon said anges of said rails, weld blocks forming welded masses of metal located within said openings and within the edges of said cheek plates and disposed against` the edges of said openings which are generally opposite to the plane of the rail junction, each of said weld blocks being applied partly upon the Webs and partly upon the flanges of said rails, there being upwardly extending spaced integral branches upon the upper portions of said cheek plates adhering to the lateral sides of the heads of the rails, and weld blocks forming welded masses of metal between the branches upon each cheek plate and disposed against the inner edges of said branches and applied against said lateral sides of the heads upon said rails, the weld-blocks in the openings within the edges of the cheek plates and between the branches upon said cheek plates being spaced apart sufficiently to allow clearances for the abutting ends of the rails.
2. A rail joint comprising a pair of metal cheek plates adhering to the lateral faces of the rails to be joined and conforming to the shape of the sides of the heads and Webs as well as the under sides and lower portions of the lateral sides o-f the heads and also the top sides of the flanges of said rails, each of said cheek plates having a Wide opening located Wholly Within the edges of the cheek plates and extendingV a distance up on the webs and down upon said flanges of said-` rails, Weld-blocks forming welded masses of metal there being upwardly extending spaced rigid pro'- jections on the upper portions Vof the cheek plates disposed against the lateral sides of said heads of the rails,V and Weld blocks upon said lateral sides of the heads of saidrrails located between .and secured toi the projections on said upper portions of said cheek plates.
