A specific example of a car truck bolster that embodies the principles of the present invention is illustrated bye-the accompanying drawings. in which:

A king-pin support 6 is welded beneath the aper` ture 5% in the web of the third channelsection 5' for the purpose of preventing the king-pin from dropping completely to the inside ofthe web of the upright channel section 2. At each end of the bolster a pair of column 45 guides I0 are welded tothe liangesof both of the channel sections I and 2, and a fifth pair of plates II are welded in vertical planes transversely to the insides of both these channel sections between each "oi these pairs of column 50 guides I0 in equally spaced relationship respect- 1 ing the vertical center lines of the. latter. inside ones of these plates l I are strengthened by triangular plates I2 that are welded between them andthe inside of the web of the upright that are-welded between the latter and thel insides of the webs of both the channel sections I and 2. Preferably, in each instance there are two of these plates I3 and they are welded parallel to the longitudinal center line of the two sections I and 2 in equally spaced relationship respecting this line.
The flanges of the inverted channel section I are further strengthened at positions between the ends and center of this section by means of a plurality of plates I4 that are welded transversely to the inside of this section.
Various hand-holds I5 are formed at appropriate positions. Since there is danger of condensed moisture accumulating within the upright ch-annel section 2, the web of this section is provided with properly positioned drain holes IB.
The two channel sections I and 2vare particularly characterized in that they are respectively worked to form from rolled steel plate sections, illustrated by Figures 8 and 9, which in each instance provide longitudinally extending central portions I1 of greater thicknesses than their edge portions I8, so that at least the major portions of the webs of these channel sections include the central portions I1 of these plate sections and at least the major portions of the ilanges of these channel sections include the edge portions I8 of these plate sections.
The chief diierence between these plate sections as they are illustrated by the drawings is the greater extents of the edge portions of the plate section that is used to form the upright channel section 2, this being necessary because of the center deepening of the latter.
The modiiication of the bolster illustrated by Figures 10 through 15 is generally similar to the bolster which has been described, and for this reason similar numerals are used wherever possible.
It will be noted that the aperture 5 in the inverted channel section 5 is bounded by a depending ange 5b formed by displacement of vthe web of this channel section 5. This provides 4a larger bearing surface on which the king-pin may bear.
Furthermore, longer plates 1a and 8e are substituted for the plates I and 8 shown in the case of the iirst described construction, and the ianges of the upright channel section 2 are recessed to form slots I9 beneath the plates 4a and at right angles to the same, other plates 20 being welded in horizontal planes to the bottomsof the plates "la and extending through the slots I9 to the outsides of the iianges of the two channel sections where they are welded to the same.
Likewise, a longer plate I4a is substituted for the plates I4, the flanges of the inverted channel sections I are recessed as at 2| and plates 22 are Welded in horizontal planes to the bottoms of the plates I4, passed through the slots 2| and welded to the outside of the anges of the two channel sections.
Instead of the plates I I being used between the column guides I0, special channel sections 23 are substituted. This section 23 in each instance has a deepened central portion 23a and web projec.- tions 23", and is welded transversely between the insides of the two channel sections I and 2 in an inverted position between each of the pairs of column guides IIJ, the latter and the iianges of at The outside ones of least one of the channel sections I and 2 having 4 slots 24 formed in them in line with the projections 23". 'Ihese projections extend through these slots and are welded to the ilanges of said channel sections. The inside ones of the ilanges of the special channel sections 23 are strengthened by the same triangular plates I2 described previously, while the outside ones of their flanges are strengthened by plates 25 which are associated with the bolster andthese flanges in the s ame manner as are the plates I3 previously described, and which differ only slightly in shape. Practically the only other difference between the two constructions consists in the sharp downward angling, as at I c, of the ends of the webs of the inverted channel section I, this bringing the web against the outsides of the webs of the special channel sections 23 at the ends of the bolster and permitting them to be welded together through the hand-holds at these positions.

A car truck bolster including inverted and upright channel sections having the edge portions of their respective flanges arranged together and interfastened by welding, said inverted channel section having a widened central portion and said upright channel section progressively deepening from its ends to its center and having its flanges shaped to accommodate said widened central section of said inverted channel section, a center plate welded to the top of said widened central portion of said inverted channel section, a pair of plates welded in vertical planes transversely to the inside of said inverted channel section beneath said center plate in equally spaced relationship respecting the transverse center line of said inverted channel section, the flanges of said upright channel section having vertical slots formed therein in line with said plates and the latter having lengthened lower portions that project through said slots and which are welded to the outsides of the flanges of said upright channel section, a third channel section that is parallel to said inverted channel section in an upright transversely to the inside of said inverted channel position beneath said center plate between said pair of plates with its anges welded to the inside of the web of said inverted channel section, the

a second pair of plates Welded in vertical planes transversely to the inside of said inverted channel section in equally spaced relationship respecting the first named pair of plates, and a third pair oi plates welded invertical planes between the rst named pair of plates and said second pair ofplates in line with the longitudinal center line oi said inverted channel section, each of said chantions of their respective anges arranged together 'and interfastened by welding, a pair of column guides welded to the flanges of both said channel sections at least adjacent each of the latters ends, a pair of plates welded in vertical planes transversely to the insides of said channel sections between each of said pairs of column guides and in equally spaced relationship respecting the vertical center lines of the latter and a plurality of plates welded in vertical planes to said pairs of plates and said channel sections parallel to the latters longitudinal center lines, .each of said channel sections being worked to form `from rolled steel plate sections providing longitudinally extending central portions of greater thicknesses than their edge portions, so that at least the major portions of the webs of said channel sections include said central portions of said plate sections and at least the major portions of the flanges of said channel sections include said edge portions of said plate sections.

A car truck bolster including inverted and upright channel sections having the edge portions of their respective flanges arranged together and interfastened by welding, a pair of column guides welded to the flanges of both said channel sections at/ least adjacent each of thel latters ends, a special channel section that has a deepened central portion and web projections and which is welded transversely between the insides of said channel sections in anv inverted position between each of said pairs of column guides, .the latter and the flanges of at least one channel sections at least adjacent each of the latters ends, a special channel section that has a deepened central portion and web projections and which is welded transversely between the insides of said channel sections in, an inverted position between each of said pairs of column i,
guides, the latter and the flanges of at least one of said channel sections having slots formed therein in line with said projections and the latter extending through said slots and being welded to the flanges of said channel sections, and a plurality of plates welded to the outsides of the flanges of said special channel sections and to the insides of said inverted and upright channel sections in vertical planes, each of said channel sections being worked to form from rolled steel plate sections providing longitudinally extending central portions of greater thicknesses than their edge portions, so that at least the major portions of the webs of said channel sections include said central portions of said plate sections and at least the major portions of the flanges of said channel sections include said edge portions of said plate sections.

A car truck bolster including inverted and upright channel sections having the edge portions of their respective flanges arranged together and interfastened by welding, a center plate fastened to the top of the web of said inverted channel section at the latters center, stiiening members welded transversely to the inside of said inverted channel section beneath said center plate, column guides fastened to the outsides of the iianges of said channel sections at positions at least adjacent the latters ends, stiffening members welded transversely to the Yinsides of said channel sections between said column guides, plates Welded in vertical planes transversely to the inside of said -inverted channel section at positions between the center and ends of the flanges of one of the same, said channel sections being recessed to form a slot beneath said plates and at right angles thereto, and other plates welded in horizontal planes to the bottoms of the rst named plates, said' other plates extending transversely of said channel sections through said slots and being welded to the outsides of the i'langes of said channel sections.

A car truck bolster including inverted and upright channel sections having the edge portions of their respective flanges arranged together and interfastened by Welding, a center plate fastened to the top of the web of said inverted channel section at the latters center, stiiening members welded transversely to the inside of said inverted channel section beneath said center plate, stiffening members welded transversely to the inside of each upright channel section in line with the rst named members, the
bottoms of said rst named members'and the tops of the second named members being in contact, column guides fastened to the outsides of the anges of said channel sections at positions at least adjacent the latters ends, stiening members welded transversely to the insides of said channel sections between said column guides and stiiening members welded transversely to the inside of at least one of said channel sections at positions betweenthe center and ends of the same.

A car truck bolster including inverted and upright channel sections 4having the edge portions of their respective anges arranged t0- gether and interfastened by welding, said inverted channel section having a widened central portion and said upright channel section progressively deepening from its ends to its center and having its flanges shaped to accommodate said widened central section of said inverted channel section.
