This invention relates to typewriting machines particularly fan iolded or continuous billing machines, and is an improvement in the machine disclosed in application Serial No. 127,684, filed February 25, 193"! by C.- H. B'eiderbecke.
The broad object oi. the present invention'is to provide novel means to hold the carbon stripping carriage in retracted position.
An object is to provide automatic latching mechanism which is rendered effective when the platen is raised preparatory to straightening the forms for the purpose of shifting the carbon sheets to the nextset of forms.
Another object is to provide a latching mechation or novel combination of parts present in the embodiment of the invention described andshown in the accompanying drawings whether within or without the scope of the appended claims and irrespective of other specific statements as to the scope of the invention contained herein.

The present invention, for convenience in description, is illustrated in the drawings as applied to the fan fold billing machine disclosed in the above application. However, it will be understood that it is not limited to the specific form of machine shown but may be applied to other fan fold billing machines equally as well.
Since the machine described in the aboveapplication is now well known in the art, it will not be described in detail, but a very brief description will be given herein of the construction and operation of the machine.
The numeral II in Figs. 1 and 3 designates generally thetypewriting machine which may be the well known International" electric writing machine, formerly known as the Electromatic".- The carriage is generally designated II and is mounted in a well known way upon grooved rails I2. Pivoted upon extension plates I3 secured to the carriage end plates are arms I 4 which at their forward ends rotatably support the platen I5. Normally, the platen is latched in writing position by means of two latches I6 pivotally mounted on the arms I4, which latches I6 eng'age lugs Ila formed in adjustable brackets Il secured to the end plates of the carriage. The latches Ii are released to raise the platen by means of a hand lever I8 having a pin I811 engaging one of the latches whereby the initial lifting movement upon the hand lever I8 first releases both latchesv I6 and thereafter rocks the arms It on their pivots Ila. When the platen is in fully elevatedposition the arms I4 abut stop lugs I3a on the extension plates I3. Only one hand lever I8 is provided which is located at the left hand end of the carriage and the latches I6 are both secured to a rod ISa. journaled in arms l4 whereby both latches are released simultaneously when the lever I8 is raised by hand. The platen I5 is held in elevated position partly by its own weight and partly by counter-balancing springs I! which are hooked around the edges of the arms I4 and the edges of tension spring I3, respectively.
Adjustably secured to the base of the typewriter at 20 (Fig. l) is a framework 2| made of tubing. This framework supports a rail 22 on which is movably mounted the forms carrier. The forms carrier includes a plate 23 which is removably secured to the platen by means of a bracket 24 and the rod 25 mounted in extension plates I3. The plate 23 is slidably mounted on a rod 22 by means of rollers 26 (Figs. 1 and 2) on a bracket 21 secured to the underside of the plate 23 whereby the plate 23. travels with the carriage. The plate 23 has its longitudinal edges bent upwardly and outwardly to provide divergent flanges 23a which act as tracks to guide the ribbon stripper carriage 28 for movement toward and away from the platen I5. The carbon strippercarriage 28 (Fig. 2) comprises a flat plate on which is mounted grooved rollers 29 engagingthe flanges 23a. The right hand pair of rollers 29 is mounted on avtruck 30 which has a pivoted and sliding movement 0 with reference to a stud 3| carried by the carriage 28 which truck is actuated by means of a spring 32 to cause the right hand pair of rollers 29 to engage the right hand flange 23a. A bar 33 is removably mounted upon the carbon stripper 55 carriage 28 and has secured thereto posts 34 which project through slots a in the carbon.

For the purpose of retracting the carbon stripper carriage 28, there is provided a coil spring 31 (Figs. 1 and 2.). This spring is anchored to a pin 39 on the carbon stripper carriage and extends rearwardly, around a pulley 40 on a stud 4| mounted on the top surface of the rear end of the plate 23, and forwardly, parallel with the right hand flange 23a, and is anchored at the forward'end of the plate 23. Thus the spring 31 normally has a tendency to draw the carbon stripper carriage rearwardly away from the platen. that is, to the right in Fig. 1.
As the typing of a set of forms with interleaved carbons proceeds, the operation of line spacing the forms wrapped around the platen causes the forms, the carbon stripper carriage 28, and the carbons anchored thereto to be drawn forwardly, that is, toward the platen I5 thereby progressively tensioning the spring 31. When the typing of a set of forms is completed, it is necessary to shift the carbons from the completed set of forms to the forms immediately following. For this purpose, the'platen is raised by means of hand lever 18 which releases the forms permitting spring 31 to retract the carbon stripper carriage. Naturally the forms and carbon sheets are also retracted.
The present invention contemplates that the stripping operation shall take place after the spring 31 has retracted the carriage 23 until it strikes an adjustable stop and contemplates the provision of a latch which is rendered potentially effective, when the platen is raised, to latch the carriage 28 in retracted position. In order to limit the retracting movement of the carbon stripper carriage 28, there is provided a stop 42, best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, consisting of a hub to which is secured a member 43 having a resilient cushion 44 in the plane of the plate comprising the carriage 28. The hub 42 is provided with a thumb screw 45 which engages a'flat formed in the top of the rod 46 supporting said hub. The rod 46 is mounted on the top surface of the plate 23 and extends parallel 53 which is angular in section and is pivoted at 54 (Fig. 1) to front and rear ends of the plate 23. It will be seen that when the carbon stripper carriage 28 is retracted, the lug 52 will ride along top surface of bar 53 adjacent the left hand edge thereof (Fig. 2) until ultimately the latch snaps over the lug 41 as in Fig. 4, Normally, however, the latch 48 is held in elevated position to preventlatching engagement thereof with lug 41 and this is accomplished by means of bar 53 through connections to the platen raising mechanism.

In this position, lever 51 is engageable by the right hand platen supporting arm I4 so as to be rocked slightly clockwise (Fig. 1) whenever the platen is raised and arms I4 are brought against the stop lugs Ila. The other arm of the lever 51 extends substantially parallel with bar 53. Adjacent the end of the rearwardlyextending arm of lever 51, the bar 53 is provided with a downwardly extending arm 59 (Fig. 3) formed in a bracket secured to 'the bar 53. The arm 59 and the lever 51 are interconnected flexibly by means of a spring which is hooked in a hole formed in the bracket :59 and is also hooked around the rearwardly extending arm of lever 51.
Normally, when the platen is in lowered position, the spring 53 holding arm 51 against the lug formed on bracket 24 also holds the left hand edge of the bar 53 (Fig. 2) in elevated position thereby preventing engagement of the latch 48 with the lug 41 of the stop 42. When the platen is raised preparatory to retracting the pack of forms with interleaved carbons, the left hand arm 14 engages the lever 51 and rocks it clockwise (Fig. 1) thereby, through the spring 60, rocking the bar 53-in a direction to depress the left hand edge thereof. This causes the .latch 48 to move downwardly to a position to permit the said latch to engage the lug 41 when the spring 31 draws the carriage 23 against the stop 42, thereby latching the carriage 23 in its retracted position. The leading edges of the forms may now be grasped and pulled forwardly into engagement with the usual leading edge gage 5| which is adjustably mounted on rod 52 fixed to the framework of the typewriter.
Since the carbon carriage is rigidly held while the forms are being drawn forwardly, a relative shifting movement will occur between the carbon sheets and forms whereby the carbon sheets are shifted to the next set of forms. The platen may now be lowered and the typed forms severed from the succeeding set of forms by means of the tearing knife usually provided for that purpose.
During the initial part of the movement of theplaten to typing position, the spring 58 will rock the lever 51 in a counterclockwise direction (Fig. 1) thereby elevating the left hand edge (Fig. 2) of the bar 53. This lifts the latch 43 out of engagement with the lug 41 and thereby frees the carbon stripper carriage for movement toward the platen when the typing of the next set of forms takes place.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single embodiment it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the inven tion. It is the intention, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of. the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a continuous billing machine, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine; a forms carrier attached to said carriage and movable therewith, said forms carrier includ inga retractable carbon stripper carriage; latching mechanism for holding the carbon stripper carriage in retracted position, a platen displaceably mounted on the typewriter carriage so as to be movable from a typing to a non-typing position. and means operative upon the, displacement of the platen for rendering said latching means elective.
2. In a continuous billing machine, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine, a platen movably mounted in said carriage so as to be displaceable from a typing to a non-typing position, 'a forms carrier connected to said carrier soas to be movable therewith and including a reciprocatory carbon stripper carriage, a stop for limiting reciprocatory movement of said carbon stripper carriage away from the platen, latching mechanism for holding the carbon stripper carriage against said step, and means responsive to movement oiithe platen from its typing to non-typing position for rendering the latch elective.
3. In a continuous billing machine, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine, of a platen, platen displacing mechanism for moving the platen from a typing to a nontyping position whereby to permit straightening forms wrapped around the platen, a forms carrier connected to said carriage so as to be movable therewith and including a carbon stripper carriage movable toward and away from the platen, said carbon stripper carriage having means to anchor carbon strips interleaved with said forms, an adjustable stop for limiting movement of the carbon stripper carriage away from the platen; means operative when the platen is raised to automatically draw the carbon stripper carriage, the forms and carbon strips supported thereby rearwardly of the platen so as to bring said carbon carriage against said stop, a latch adapted to hold the carbon stripper carriage against said stop, a release bar extending-from said latching mechanism to a point in rear of the platen, said release bar when operated disengaging said latch permitting forward movement of the carbon stripper carriage, and means controlled by the platen raising mechanism for operating said releasebar when the platen is moved to typing position.
4; In a machine of the class described, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting 'machine, of a platen, means for displacing the platen from atyping to a non-typing position, a reciprocable carbon stripper carriage movable toward and away from the platen, means to limit movement of said carbon stripper carriage away from the platen, means for automatically retracting said carbon stripper carriage when the platen is displaced, a latch for holding the carbon stripper carriage in retracted position, and means responsive to movement of the platen displacing mechanism for releasing said latch.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with the carriage, of the typewriting machine, of a platen, means for movably mounting the platen on said carriage for displacement from a typing to a non-typing position, a carbon strip anchoring device movable toward and away from said platen, means operative upon a'displacement ofthe platen to non-typing position for moving the carbon strip anchoring device away from said platen,'means for holding said device in its-retracted position to permit a relative shifting movement between forms and the carbon strips interleaved withthe forms and anchored to said device, and means operative upon a movement of the platen to its typing position for releasing said latch.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine, oi a platen, means for displacing the platen from a typing to a non-typing position to permit straightening of forms wrapped around the platen, a supporting frame mounted in the rear of the typewriter, a track connected to the typewriter carriage and movably supported by said frame so as to travel with said carriage, a carbon stripper carriage movably mounted on said track so as to be reciprocable toward and away from the platen, latching means adjustably mounted along said track and including a stop for limiting retracting movement of the carbon stripper carriage, a latch operating bar'cooperating with said latch and extending parallel'with said track to a point adjacent the carriage of the typewriter, and connections between the platen displacing mechanism and said bar for operating the latter to release the latch when the platen displacing mechanism is operated. I

In a machine 01 the classdescribed, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine, of a platen displaceably mounted in said carriage for movement from atyping to a non-typing position, a device for supporting one end of a carbon strip and movable toward and away from the platen, means to hold said device in retracted position, and means operative to release the holding means when the platen is moved to typing .position.

In a machine of the class described, the combinatlon with the carriage of the typewriting machine, a platen mounted in said carriage for displacement fronra typing to a non-typing positionfa carriage movable toward and from the platen, said carriage having means to anchor carbon strips interleaved with forms wrapped around the platen, means for limiting movement of the carbon strip carriage in a direction away from the platen, a spring for retracting said carbon strip carriage when the platen is displaced to non-typing position, means to hold said carbon strip carriage in the position determined by the limiting means, and connections between said latch and the carriage of the typewriter whereby said latch is released by displacement of the platen.

In a continuous billing machine, the combination with the carriage of the typewriter, a carrier for continuous forms movable with the carriage; said carrier including a retractable member movable transversely of the line of travel of the typewriter carriage, on which member the continuous forms are supported, with means to attach a strip impregnated with transfer material to said member;,means for holding said member in a retracted position, a platen movably mounted on the typewriter carriage so as to be displaceable to and from a typing position, and means operative upon adisplacement of the platen in one direction for rendering the holding means effective and upon displacement in the other direction to render the holding means ineffective.

In a continuous billing machine, the combination with the carriage of the typewriting machine, a platen mounted on said carriage for displacement to and from a, typing position, 3. forms carrier device mounted rearwardly of the carriage and including a carbon sheet anchoring device movable toward and away from the platen, means to limit reciprocatory movement of the carbon sheet anchoring device in a direction away from the platen, means for holding the carbon sheet anchoring device against said limiting means, and means responsive to displacement oi the platen for rendering the holding means ei-- fective.
