This invention relates to fan-fold typewriting machines, in which, besides the fan-fold work-web, there remains in the machine a condensed record sheet or web upon which are manifolded close together the entries fronra long succession of fan-fold forms. The fansfold web is considerably narrower than the condensed record-web. This wide record-web therefore is held by means of its side margins during manipulation of the overlying relatively narrow web.
This wide record-web is usually held in front of the platen by means of rolls or clamps. It has been found that when the platen was lifted for web-straightening and carbon-stripping purposes respecting the fanfold web, it often happened that the rear of.

Co-operating with the aforesaid clamps there is also provided a separate table or plate at the intake side of the platen be' tween the platen and the introductory shelf over which the fan-fold runs. Provision is made for clamping the following end of the record-web to this auxiliary table. The web is therefore clamped both at its front end and at its rear end, and in this condition is held upon the platen so that, during the raising and lowering of the platen, said recordweb cannot become displaced or foul the fanfold web or any part of the machine.

present invention in manifolding asuccession of sets of extra short carbon-interleaved forms constituting a fan-fold web, and making a condensed record thereof. Such. forms usually contain only one line of data, and
are oftentoo short to be eficiently handled in a usual continuous billing typewriting machine, since using it would require too many carbon-stripping operations. it is a feature of the present invention to provide means for efliciently typing short forms and making a condensed record of the data typed thereon with a minimum of carbon-stripping operations. To this end, device sare provided for raising the platen slightly which co-operate with the work-sheetclamping means of the present invention which grip a condensed record-web securely taut at both sides of the platen against being kinked or dragged forward while the overlying form-bearing work web is pulled ahead, to bring a new form to printing position. Thereafter the carbons are stripped from several typed forms at one operation.
Other features and advantages will here inafter appear.

The parts described hereinbefore may be of the same construction as usual in an Underwood standard continuous billing typewriting machine.
A typewriting machine embodying the present invention may be advantageously used for manifolding a line of data on each of a series of sets of short forms 31 previously printed on the web 23, and making a condensed record of such data on a wider underlyin record web or sheet 32, laterally ositioned on the platen by means hereinafter escribed, so that both of its side-edge portions extend out beyond the side edges of the web 23. For doing this kind of condensedrecord work expeditiously with a minimum of operations, it is a feature of the present invention to provide means whereby it is convenient to type several sets of the forms 31 before stripping the carbons therefrom and severing the typed forms, instead of stripping the carbons from each set immediately after it is typed, which has usually been done heretofore.
Tothis end, means are provided for holding the record web stationary on the platen while a typed set of forms is pulled ahead relatively to the record-web for bringing an other set of forms to typing position. One embodiment of the record-web-holding means includes an auxiliary rear paper-table 35 for the record-web, above the usual paper-table 24, over which the work-web 23 is conducted. The table 35 is supported by two forwardly and downwardly extending arms 36, each being integrally joined to an inreaching anglepiece 37. The an lei-piece forms an integral part of an upwar ly and rearwardly extending bracket-member 38, fastened on each end plate of the platen-displacin g frame. A portion 39 of each angle-piece 37 is disposed in a plane which intersects the axis of the platen at a right angle, and is positioned for serving as a side-edge guide for the record-web.
To co-operate with the table 35 and to grip thereagainst the record-web 32, two clam ing arms 40 are provided, each havin a rubber shoe 41 at its lower end, and eac being adjustably fastened to a rock-shaft 42 journaled in the brackets 38. The arms 40 extend downwardly and slightly forwardly from the shaft 42, and are urged toward the table 35 by fastening a forwardly-extendin arm 43 and a like arm 44 on the right and the left end of the shaft 42, respectivel Two tensile springs 45 each have one end astened to a screw 46 in the adjacent end plate on the platen-displacing frame, the upper end of one spring being fastened to the outer end of the arm 43, and the upper end of the other spring being fastened to a right-hand portion of a laterally-disposed pin 47, fast in the forward end of the arm 44 on the right side thereof. The pin 47 passes through the arm and has a portion disposed on the left side of the arm 44 for a purpose to presently appear.
It is a feature of the present invention to provide devices which will clamp the recordweb at the delivery side of the platen in c0- operation with the clamping arms 40, thereby holding the record-web 32 securely taut on the platen, regardless of its movement upwardly when displaced, or the movement of the work-web 23 over the record-web. To this end, a paper-table 50 is fastened between the end plates 13 and 14 at the delivery side of the platen for conducting thereover both the web 23 and the record-web 32 as the typing proceeds. For gripping the side edges of the record-web 32 against the table, clear of the side edges of the web 23, two downwardly and forwardly extending clamping arms 51 are loosely mounted on the shaft 42, and have inreaching extensions or tabs 52 provided with rubber friction shoes 53, which are arranged for engaging squarely against the table 50. For urging the tabs downwardly toward the table, two helical springs 54 are coiled around the shaft 42, one spring being positioned adjacent each arm 51, inwardly therefrom. The inner end of each spring 54 is fastened to a collar 55, which may be riveted .to the shaft 42. The other end of each spring 54 terminates in a forwardly-extending portion disposed alongside the adjain the locking notch cent arm 51, and having aninreaohing hook 57which engageslover the top elge of the arm. By arranging each spring with a small amount of initial tension, it is effective for urging theadj ace'nt arm downward, and permits the tabs 52 toengage against the table 50 independently of the engagement of the arms 40 against the table 35.
It is another feature ofthe present invention to have the clamping means atboth the introductory side and the delivery side of the plateircontrolled by a single operating instrumentality. To this end, a forwardly-extending liftingarm 58 is fastened on the shaft 42 outward from each clamping arm 51 and adjacent thereto. An inreaching lug 59, on the end of each arm 58, is disposed for engaging against the lower edge of the adjacent arm51 and raising its tab 52 from the table 50 upon clockwise rotation of the shaft 42, which rotation it will be noted is also effective to swing the clamping arms 40 up from the table 35.
During normal t ping' operations, the clamping arms 40 and 51 are locked in released or ineffective condition above the tables and 50, respectively, by instrumentalities including a locking lever generally designated as 60, which is pivoted against the right face-of the left-hand bracket-member 38 on a screw 61 positioned forwardly from the shaft 42. The lever 60 has an upwardly extending operating arm 62 terminating in a leftwardly-bent finger-piece 63, and has a short rearwardly-extending arm 64 whose rear end is provided with a concave locking notch 65.
In effective condition of the clamping arms and 51, aroller 66, revolubly mounted on the left-hand end of the pin 47, is disposed in the corner of the arms 62 and 64 (Figure 1), and bears down against the upper edge of the arm 64. A depending toe 67, on the loweredge portion of the arm 64 adjacent the rear end thereof, engages against the upper edge of the lefthand end plate 14 and limits the downward movement of the arm 64, due to the pull of the left-hand spring on the pin 47. A heel 68 on the lever is arranged for enga ing against the end plate 14 and arresting the counterclockwise movement of the arm 64 when it is in looking position.
To release the record-web-clamping arms 40 and 51 and lock them in releasedposition,
the finger-piece 63 is pulled forward. his swings the arm 64 counterclockwise, and the rol er 66 will be cammed upward and will ride rearwardly over the upper edge of the arm until it reaches the outer end and is seated It will'be noted that the shaft 42 and screw 61 are fixed relatively to each other, which construction prevents the force of the spring 45 from pushing the shaft and screw apart by m ans of the togglejoint action of the arms 44 and 64. The copermits the arm 44 to then be pulled downward as the arm 62 swings to the rear.
It will also be noted that due to the much greater length of the arm 62 relative to the arm 64, and further because of the camming action of the latter arm upon the roller 66, a light pull forwardly on the fingerpiecc is sufiicient to raise the clamping arms 40 and 51 and lock them in inelfective positions.
According to one use of acontinuous billing typewriting machine embodying the present invention, a plurality of the sets of short forms 31 are typed one after another before any set is severed from the web 23. To make a condensed record on the sheet 32 of the data typed on the forms 31, the operation is as follows. After typing a line of data, the clamping arms 40and 51 being normally released, both the web 23 and the record-web 32 are line-spaced ahead by the line-spacing ratchet-wheel 17, enough to give the :desired condensed record spacing on the web 32. The clamping arms 40 and 51 may then be made effective to grip the record-web by the operative conveniently pushing the finger-piece63 rearwardly with the middle finger of her left hand until the lever '60 is stoppedby the toe 67 coming against the end plate 14. At that point in the movement of the'finger-piece 63, the operatives first or index finger is closely adjacent a finger-piece- 70 of a locking lever generally designated as 71, which maybe pivoted about a shaft 7 2 in the carriage 16., and is eifective'to lock the platen-displacing frame 15 down by means of a notch 73, which engages about a pin'74 in the endplate 14 of the platen-displacing frame. The lower edge of the notch 73 may be constructed to serve as a cam, so that rearward movement of the finger-piece 70., by said indenfinge'r of the operative will press the pin 74 upward and raise the platen 11 off the feed-rolls 22 (Figure 5). The construction and principle of operat-ion'of the lever 71, except as hereinafter noted, may be the same as is disclosed in 'my co-pending application No. 202,631, filed June 30, 1927.
The lever 71 is provided with means for arresting its rearward swing, which means includes a novel integral hook 7 5 formed on the lower edge of the notch .73 for engagement against the pin 74. It will be noted that the finger-piece 70 extends rightwardly whereby the finger-piece 63 may be'moved snbt tantially alongside it.
The lever 71 is normally urged forward by alpring'device (not shown) and a portion 71* positioned above the notch 73 has a camedge 71" for engagement with the pin 7 4 when it: isilowered subsequently to the raising of githeplatento carbon-stripping position. The

Each 25 bracket has an upright portion 78 which may substantially align with the angle-piece ga eportion 39, and serve as a side-edge guide or the typedportion of the record-web as it is 4 bed rearwardly.

In cases where ver short ms 31 are employed, it may be esirable that the last typed form is not severed with the preceding typed forms, but left connected to the succeedmg untyped forms for gag- 5 ing purposes.
A usual knife 86 serves as a guiding means for the work-web 23, but will ordinarily not be used for severing the web 23, according to the above-described use of my inventlon, with short forms. It can be readily seen, however, by those skilledv in the art that a continuous billing typewriting machine embodying the present invention can be used in many cases for ordinary continuous billing work, and in such cases the knife will be used in the usual way.
After severing a grou of typed forms, the platen will be lowere to normal ping position, and the clamping arms will reeased, and the next cycle of operations performed as described above.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and ortions of the improvements ma be used without others.
Having thus escribed my invention, I claim:
1. In a web-manifolding carbon-stripping typewritin machine, the combination of a platen-disp acing frame, a revoluble laten 1n said frame around which may be fe from the rear a multiple-ply, form-bearing, carbon-interleaved work-web and a wider underlying record-web having both side edges exposed, lower feed-rolls, a clamping device on said frame for clampin said record-web at the introductory side 0 said platen free of said work-web, a clamping device on said frame at the delivery side of said platen arra'n d for clamping the side ed es of said recor -web clear of said work-we and releasable instrumentalities effective for locking said clamping devices in ineffective positions to permit said record-web to be line spaced ahead with said work-web as the typing proceeds, said clamping devices eflective togri said record-web and hold it taut aroun said platen upon elevating the latter for stripping said carbons, whereby said record-web will be held against falling down onto said work-web and being kinked or otherwise fouled.
2. In a web-manifolding carbon-stripping typewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen around which may be fed from the rear a multiple-ply, carbon-interleaved, form-bearing work-web and a wider underlying record-sheet having both side edges exposed, means for displacing said platen upwardly for stripping the carbons from one form of said web to a succeeding form, a clamping device at the delivery side of said platen for ripping said record-sheet, and a clamping evice at the introductor side of said laten for gripping said recor sheet, said 0 amping devices being movable with said platen and effective to grip said record-sheet and hold it taut around said platen when the latter is in its displaced position, whereby said record-sheet is pre vented from dropping on said work-web and ord 'web and movement of the without effect enthe position of said record being thereby wrinkled or otherwise fouled. 3. In a web-manifolding carbon-stripplng typewriting machine having an upwardly displaceable platen-frame, the combination of a revoluble platen in said frame around which may be fed from the rear a multipleply, carbon-interleaved work-web and a wider underlying record-sheet having both side edges exposed,- a clamp-device mounted on said frame at the delivery side of said platen effective for gripping said recordsheet. at each side of Said web, and a clamp device mounted on said frame at the introductory side of said platen effective for grlp ping said record-sheet free of said work-vveb, said clamp-devices cooperating to hold said record-sheet taut around said platen in its upwardly displaced position and fast against movement by the friction of said work-web when moved ahead relative to said recordsheet.
4. In a typewriting machine of the class described, the combination of a platen around which may be fed from the rear a multipleply work-web interleaved with carbons and a wider underlying record-sheet having both side edges exposed, means for displacing said platen upwardly for straightening said web under said platen and stripping said carbons, and means for clamping said record-sheet on each side of said platen free'of said workweb to hold said sheet against falling by gravity away from said platen onto said workweb when the platen is displaced upwardly 7 away from said work-web.
5. In a web-manifolding carbon-stripping typewriting machine, the combination of a platen-displacing frame, a platen in said frame around which maybe fed from the rear a multiple-ply, carbon-interleaved work-web and a wider underlying record-sheet having both side edges exposed, a paper-table mounted on said frame at the delivery side of said platen, over which both of the work-pieces pass to the rear, a paper-table on said frame at the introductory side of said platen over which said record-sheet is conducted to said platen, said work-web passing below said lastmentioned table, a clamping device c0-op'erating with said first-mentioned table for gripping the side edges of said record-sheet clear of said work-web, a clampingdeviceon said frame effective for gripping said record-sheet against said second-named table, said clamping devices being normally released, and means supported on said frame forrendering each of said clamping devices effective at one operation preliminary to the upward displacement of said platen, whereby said record 'sheet is held against falling on said rec latter ahead is sheet relative to the printing line. i
6. The structure described in claim 5, characterized by said means which controls both of said clamping devices, including a later a1 rock-shaft on sa d frame having said clamping devices operatively fastened thereto, and a lever-system effective for rotating said shaft against spring tension to clampreleasing position.
7 In a web-manifolding carbon-stripping" rear a multiple-ply, carbon-interleaved workweb and a wider underlying record-sheet having bothside edges exposed, a paper-table mounted on said frame at the delivery side of said platen, over which both of the workpieces pass to the rear, a paper-table on said frame at the introductory side of said platen over which said record-sheet is conducted to said platen, saidwork-web passing below said last-mentioned table, a clamping device cooperating with said first-mentioned table for gripping the side edges of said record-sheet clear of said work-web, a clamping device on said frame effective for gripping said record-sheet against said second-named table, said clamping devices being normally released, means supported on said frame for rendering each of said clamping devices effective, at one operation preliminary to the upward displacement of said platen, whereby said record-sheet is held against falling on said record-web and movement of the latter ahead is without effect on the position of said record-sheet relative to the'printing line, said means which controls both of said clamping devices including a lateral rock-shaft on said frame having said clamping devices operatively fastened thereto, and a lever-system effective for rotating said shaft against spring tension to clamp-releasing position, said lever-system including instrumentalities for latching said shaft in a position which will hold said clamping devices in ineffective feed-rolls engaging against said platen, a v

14. In a typewriting machine of the class described, in combination, a platen around which may be fed a work-sheet, lower feedrolls engaging said work-sheet against said platen, a clamping device at the introductory side of said platen normally ineffective, instrumentalities including a lever which are effective whensaid lever is disposed in its forward-position to lock said clamping devices in ineffective positions, said instrumentalities being arranged for rendering said clamping devices effective upon movement of said lever rearwardly, and a second lever effective for raising said platen by movement rearwardly, said first-named lever when moved to its rearmost position being disposed in convenient proximity to said secondnamed lever, whereby an operative may first operate said first-named lever and thereafter said second-named lever with one hand in substantially one continuous operative movement.
15. In a typewriting machine of the class described, the combination with a revoluble platen around which a work-sheet may be fed, of a clamping device for gripping said work-sheet at the introductory side of said platen, a clamping device for gripping said work-sheet-at the delivery side of said platen, and instrumenta-lities including a lever-system effective for moving each of said clamping devices toineffective-positions, said leversystem carrying means effective to lock said clamping devices automatically inineflective position, 7
16. The structure described in claim 15, characterizedbythe locking means including a lever-arm having a notch in its end, a second spring-urged lever-arm oppositely disposed to said first-named arm in an adjacent parallel plane, and devices carried by said secondenamed lever-arm arranged to be seated in said notch upon operative movement of said first-named arm to locking position, whereby the latter lever-arm is looked against spring-urged movement.
17. The structure described in claim 15, characterized by the locking means including a lever-arm having a notch in its end, a second spring-urged lever-arm oppositely disposed to said first-named arm in an adjacent parallel plane, and devices carried by said second named lever-arm arranged to be seated in said notch upon operative movement of said first-named arm to locking position, whereby the latter lever-arm is locked against spring-urged movement, said devices on the second-named arm including a lateral pin and roller, and further characterized by the notch in the first-named arm being formed to permit said roller to ride out of said notch upon releasing movement of said first-named arm.
18. In a typewriting machine of the class described, in combination, a carriage, a platen around which may be fed from the rear c a Work-sheet, means for displacing said platen upwardly, including an upwardly-extendmg lever on said carriage mounted ad acent the left hand of said platen and having a rightvvardlyextending finger-piece, springpressed clamping devices effective for clamping said Work-sheet at the introductory and delivery sides of said platen, said clamping devices being normally locked in ineffective position, and instrumentalities for unlocking said clamping devices whereby they may be 7 returned by spring-pressure to effective position, said instrumentalities including an upwardly-extending lever positioned forwardly from and in a leftwardly-adjacent plane relative to said first-named lever, said last-named lever having a leftvvardly-extending fingerpiece so positioned that upon movement by an operative of said last-named lever rear- Wardly adjacent said first-named lever with the middle finger of her left hand, the first finger of'her left hand is brought approximately into engagement with the finger-piece of said first-named lever.
19. The structure described in claim 17, characterized by means for stopping the .notched lever When it has low moved to a position wherein the devices are'seated in the notch.
