27Claim8- This invention relates to a novel method and machine for making tapered paper cups from a web of paper.
In the manufacture of cups of this type, by the methods now commonly used, it is necessary to first cut the blanks for the cups from a stack of sheets by means of a die in a heavy press. The blanks are then stacked upon a machine and fed individually thereto by an air operated feeding device. Such feeding devices are inherently troublesome and the feeding of the blanks to the machine is affected by atmospheric conditions which frequently create static to such an extent that it will interfere with the feeding operation and also with the operation of the machine itself.
The object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a machine which will produce a cup of this type at a high rate of speed and also with a minimum of labor by eliminating the operation of cutting the cup blanks from a stack of paper as now commonly done.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine for cutting-a blank of correct form, from a web of paper. and to produce a tapered :iup therefrom with a minimum of waste in mate- A still further object is to include, in a machine for making paper cups, a means for arranging the finished cups upon their deliveryeither in a nested or stacked order.

A blank holding shoe 62 is provided for holding the end of the web upon the die plate 39 while the said end is being cut off into the blank 5I by the punch 36, This shoe is mounted, by-
means of a lever 83, upon a rock shaft 64 which is rocked in one direction by a spring 85 to force said shoe downwardly upon said blank. A lever 66 is also secured on said rock shaft 64 and operated by a cam 81 mounted upon the shaft 55 to lift said shoe 62 from said blank.
A feed roll 68 is mounted between the side members 6-45 on a shaft 69 and a pressure roll 19 is mounted thereabove, and in contact therewith, on a bar II which is supported on slide blocks 12 that are slidably mounted between the extensions 13 and forced downwardly by a pair of springs 14.
A guide bar I5, having upturned side portions 15a and an opening 15b through which the roll 70 projects, is supported by means of a bracket 75, upon a supporting bar I1. This bar is mounted'- on the supporting plate 18 which rests. upon members 8-8 and an upper roll mounted upon the shaft 81 rotatable in slide blocks 88 which are slidably mounted between posts 89 and forced downwardly by a pair of springs 98. A pair of shoes II are mounted on said plate I80, spaced therefrom and supportedthereon by means of a bar I92 on which is also mounted, between said shoes, a folding finger I03 having a guide extension I84 positioned below said bar and also spaced from the plate I88.

The entire machine is driven by means .of this pulley through a system of gears and pinions which interconnect the rotatable shafts, as clear- 1y illustrated in Figure 1, on which the various rolls are mounted. also mounted in said frame in contact'with the said gumming roll and a second gum transfer roll I29 which is mounted on a shaft I 2I that is rotatably mounted in the end of the said frame. A pair of driving discs I22 are also mounted upon the shaft I2I. These driving discs rest upon the transfer rolls 94 and are driven thereby'in order to rotate the gum transfer roll I29, and through a train of gears I23, also said rolls I29, II 9, and H8. A. gum scraper I24 is mounted upon the frame H5 and rests in contact with the gum roll H8 to scrape the surplus gum off the said roll during its rotation. It will be noted that the gum roll H8 is longer than the transfer roll H9 which in turn is longer than the transfer roll I29 for the following purpose.
The gum is picked up from the container by the roll H8 and applied to the roll H9 from which it is picked up by the transfer roll I29 and applied to the gumming pad 98 as it passes under said roll and contacts therewith. The surplus gum on the transfer roll I29 will move on the ends of the roll I29 and accumulate upon the overlapping ends of the roll H9. The surplus um on this roll H9 will likewise move off its ends on to the overlapping ends of the gumming 10 of the drawings.

A separate gumming device is provided at the feeding end of the machine which consists of a gum container I25 having mounted thereon a gumming roll I26 and a scraper I2I in contact therewith. This gumrning device is removably mounted upon the supporting bars 21 and 29 and retained thereon, against longitudinal movement, by means of a notch I2Ia in the bottom of. the scraper supporting posts I28 into which the supporting bar 21 fits. 1
An air pump I29 is mounted upon the side of the machine and operated through a pitman I39 by means of a crank I3I which is connected to one of the roll shafts. An air nozzle I32 extends from the end of said pump and is positioned adjacent to the web cutting opening 49.
The operation of my improved machine and the method of making paper cups therein are as follows:
A roll of paper web 9 is mounted on the hangers 8-8, by means of the spindle I9, and passed over the supporting roll II and guide roll 2I so that a portion of said web will hang loosely below the roll 9 in the manner clearly shown in Figure The end of theweb is then pushed through the feed rolls 24 and 39-39 and the machine is operated by hand to cause the punch 36 to cut a small piece of the web off the end thereof and form the front part of the blank along the edge 42 of the die.
The gumming devices, shown in Figures 6 and 11, are then placed in position and the machine is started in operation. The weight of the bar I8 will serve to keep the web roller I2 in driving The feed rolls 3939 will, during their rotation, cause the said web to be engaged between the surfaceof the roll covering 25 and the circumferential feed surfaces 33a, thus moving the end of said web forwardly to the position occupied by the blank 5I and at the same time applying a strip of gum 35 to the edge of the web by means of the gumming disc 34 which receives the said gum from the gum roll I26. At this time the cam 61, on the shaft 55, will permit the spring to force the shoe 62 downwardly upon the said end of the web. The cam 43 will then move the lever 44, rock the shaft 45 and force the punch 36 downwardly, by means of the lever 46, cutting off the end of said blank on the edges 4| and 42 and thus forming the blank 5I. At this time the air pump I29 is operated, by means of the crank I3I, to force a blow of air through the nozzle I32 so as to blow the piece of web, which is cut off, through the opening 49 and into a receptacle which maybe conveniently placed under the machine.
The shoe 62 is now lifted by the cam 43 and the creasing roll 54 will engage the end of the blank 5|, between the creasing edges 58 and the surface of the roll cover 52a, moving the blank forward and at the same time creasing the same on lines, as indicated by the dotted lines 5Ia in Figure 13, which diverge from the theoretical point 5Ib located ofi said blank on the axis thereof.
It will be noted, from the illustration in Figure 8, that the creasing edges 58 will force the blank into the resilient covering 52a of the roll 52;
thus definitely forming creases in the said blank without cutting through it.
During this creasing operation, the sides of the blank will move upwardly but, that side on which the gum strip 35 is containedwill be held away from the shaft 55 by means of the guard 54a in order to prevent the said gum from touching the shaft.
The travel of said blank will be continued, by said creasing rolls, over the plate 18 and under the guide bar I5 until it is engaged between the rolls 68 and I9 by which it is then moved forwardly. While the said blank is being moved by the said rolls 68 and 19, the edges thereof will be engaged by the folding fingers 89 and 82 which will start tofold over said edges on the creases formed by the said creasing rolls. The finger 89 will fold the ungummed side a little ahead of the gummed side of said blank which is folded over it by the finger 82. The forward travel of the said blank will be continued by the said rolls 68 and 19 by which it is pushed under the folding fingers 8| and 83 which will fold the said sides further, and into a position one.upon the other, and guide the said partly folded blank between the pressing and creasing rolls 84 and 86. The said rolls will then grasp the end of the blank and continue its forward travel. The creasing blade 92 on the roll 86, co-acting with the groove 9| on the roll 84, will crease the partly folded blank on the dotted line 5Ic, indicated in Figure 14, while the surfaces of said rolls will squeeze the two sides of the blank upon the central portion thereof, as shown in Figure 7 of the drawings, causing the said two sides to be adhered together by means of the gum 35. 'The said crease, on the dotted line 5Ic, will cause the end 5Id of said blank to assume an upward position as clearly indicated in dotted lines in Figure 9. The travel of said blank is continued by said creasing rolls and the travel continued thereby. The said blank will then pass under the shoes i! .which will engage the sides of the blank to hold the same downwardly upon the plate I00. wardly extending end ld of the blank will move between the said shoes and strike the folding finger 103. The said finger will cause the said end of the blank to be folded backwardly upon the gum I33 during the passage of the blank thereunder. The guide IM' will guide the said end between the pressing'rolls lll5'and H0 which rolls will then press the said end l3'3 upon the partly folded blank to cause it to be adhered in position thereon and move the said blank, which is now in the form of a completed cup, forwardly and deliver the same-upon the trough Ill. As clearly illustrated in Figure 4, this trough is so disposed, with respect to the creasing rolls I05 and H0, that it will hold the finished cups in a position whereby they will be received, as they are delivered upon the trough, one within the other in' a nested form. The said trough may be made of a width suitable to slightly squeeze the sides of the cup together so .as to partly open the cups as they are delivered upon the said trough and thereby facilitate the reception of the cup coming through the rolls into the preceding cup which is already in the trough.
When it is desired to have the cups delivered from the machine in stacked arrangement, the trough may be shaped as illustrated in Figure 5 in which the trough Illa is provided with an upturned portion adjacent to the rolls I05 and.

This upturned portion will tend to lift the end of the cup, as it is delivered from the rolls, so that the following cup will slide underneath it; thus the cups are delivered into the trough one under the other. made of a suitable length and the sides thereof raised gradually in a direction towards its end so that the cups, as they are pushed forward by their delivery from the machine, will also be lifted into a substantially upright position and one behind the other as'clearly illustrated in the Said Figure 5.
For the purpose of aiding in the dispensation of the cups, it is p-r'eferred not to sharply fold the edges thereof for their entire length, but to fold the upper portion of said edges into-.what may be termed as a rolled edge. This is accomplished by the method clearly illustrated in Figure 7 from which it may be seen that the edges of the cup register with the diverging grooves 84a and 86a which will allow the folds of the said edges to remain in a slightly extended position while the central portion of the cup is squeezed together by the rolls.
My improved machine may be constructed, as illustrated in Figure 3, to produce a cup of slightly modified form such as that illustrated 0 in Figure 18. In this construction, the cut-off -'punch and die is made of a-slightly different shape so that the corner of the blank is not cut off with the waste portion; thus producing theblank I34 shown in Figure 3, which is of the The said up- The said trough may be slightly difierent form as compared to the blank 5|. In this modification, the creasing edges" on the creasing roll 54 are diverged on a slightly different angle so that they will crease the blanks on dotted lines I35. 7 The said blank is folded by the machine in the same manner as the blank 5|,
with the result that a cup of the form shown in Figure 8 of the drawings will be produced instead of the cup as shown in Figure 17. I
While I have illustrated and described a machine of the construction shown in the drawings for producing the said cups, it is to be understood that, if desired, this machine may be further modified in its construction without departing from the scope of my invention. For
. instance, a set of cutting rolls may be used, in-
stead of the cut-off device illustrated in Figures 10 and 12, so that the web is cut as it passes through the said cutting rolls without requiring an intermittent movement thereof.
It is also pointed out that the primary object of my invention, which is to produce a cup of the tapered type from a web with a minimum of waste, is accomplished by disposing the mechanism for feeding the web 9 diagonally and at an angle of approximately 45 to the axis of that portion of the machine which comprises the folding mechanism.
Thus a blank which is substantially square in shape, with the exception that it may have either one or two corners thereof cut off, is produced for such a cup by a simple cutting operation and with a minimum of waste; the said blank being. disposed, with relation to the said machine, so that it will be folded thereby on lines diverging from its axis, which axis extends diagonally through said blank.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the character described for forming paper cups from a web, a mechanism for feeding said web to said machine, a cuttingoff device for removing a section from said web and thereby producing a cup blank from the end thereof, and a folding mechanism adapted to move said blank through said machine on a plane with said cutting device and in a direction that is diagonally to the axis of said web and during said movement fold the said blank to form a cup therefrom.
2. In amachine for producing paper cups of the character described from a web, a feeding mechanism, a folding mechanism, said feeding mechanism comprising means for feeding the end of said web at an angle to the axis of said folding mechanism, means for removing a single waste portion of said web at a distance from its end and thereby cutting off the said end and completely forming a cup blank having its axis extending at an angle to the axis of said web and disposed in the direction of travel of the said folding mechanism, and means in the said folding mechanism for creasing the said blanks on lines diverging and at-an angle to the axis.

4. In a machine of the character described for for cutting off the end of said web and thereby portion of said partly folded blank upon the said overlapping sides and thereby complete the folding of said blank into a cup, and pressure rolls for pressing the folded portions of said'blank into forceful contact upon each other, said pressure rolls having grooves in the surfaces thereof to prevent pressure upon the folds forming the side edges of said cup.
.5. In a machine of the character described for producing cups from a web, means for feeding the end of said web to said machine, a device for cutting off the end of said web andthereby forming a cup blank on said machine, mechanism for partly folding said blank into a tapered form while moving thesame through said machine, means for creasing said partly folded blank transversely to its axis and continuing the movement of said blank, and a stationary finger positioned to engage the point of said partly folded blank during the said movement thereof and fold the same at said transverse crease to complete said cup.
6. In a machine of the character described for producing paper cups from a blank, folding mechanism adapted to move said blank through said machine and comprising a creasing roll for creasing said blank on lines at an angle to its axis, means for partly folding the same on said lines into a tapered form, means for positioning the forward end of said partly folded blank at an angle to the adjacent portion thereof, a stationary member positioned to intercept the said forward end during its movement past the said member and fold the same upon said adjacent portion, and means adapted to guide the said adjacent portion in the course of its movement during the folding of said forward end. 7. In a machine of the character described for producing cups from a web, a bed, a device for cutting off the end of said web and thereby forming a cup blank upon said bed with its axis disposed at an angle to the axis of said web, a folding mechanism comprising a plurality of pairs of rolls adapted to engage said blank therebetween and move the same in the direction of its axis upon said bed and during said movement fold the said blank into a tapered cup; said mechanism and rolls comprising a pair of creasing, rolls adapted to crease said blank on lines angularly disposed with relation to its axis, means for partly folding the said blank on said lines with its sides in overlapping position upon the central portion thereof, a pair of pressing and creasing rolls for transversely creasing said partly folded blank and pressing the said overlapping sides into contact with each other, a stationary folding member said transverse crease, stationary retaining members spaced from said bed and adapted'to guide the adjacent portion of said partly folded blank in its movement with relation to said bed while moving thereon during the folding of said end, and a pair of pressing rolls for forcing the said folded end into contact upon said overlapping sides to complete said cup.
8. In a machine for forming paper cups from a blank of sheet material, a folding mechanism comprising a plurality of pairs of rolls for creasing said blank, means for folding the same into a completed cup, and cup supporting means adapted to receive and support the said cups in a position wherein they are nested one partly within the other as they are delivered from the machine.
9. In a machine for forming paper cups from a blank of sheetmaterial, a folding mechanism comprising a plurality of pairs of rolls for creasing said blank and means for folding the same into a completed cup, a trough positioned to receive said completed cups as they are delivered from said machine, and means associated with said trough for tipping the last cup received on said trough in a position whereby its end is disposed to guide the following cup underneath the same and thereby arranging said cups one uncharacter described from a paper blank, folding means for partly folding said blank into a tapered form while moving on a line of travel, means for transversely creasing said partly folded blank and causing the forward portion thereof to be spaced from said line and a stationary member adapted to engage said forward end and fold the same on said transverse crease during the movement of said blank.

creasing said blank on lines diverging with relation to its axis while moving the same in the direction of said axis, folding means for folding the side portions of said blank on said creases in overlapping position of the central portion thereof, means for creasing the said blank transversely to its axis, and separate folding means for folding the forward portion of said partly folded blank at the transverse crease.
12. A machine of the character described for producing cups from a web, means for feeding the end of said web to said machine, a device for cutting off a portion from said end and thereby forming a cup blank upon said machine, a plurality of rolls for moving said blank through said machine in the direction of its axis, means for first folding two corner portions of said blank upon the central portion thereof, means for folding another corner of said partly folded blank, together with a portion of the said two corner portions first folded upon the same to complete a cup, and means for applying adhesive to said blank for securing the same in cup form.
13. In a machine for making paper cups from' a blank of sheet material, a mechanism for folding the said blank into a completed cup, an inclined trough positioned to' receive said completed cups as they are delivered from said machine; said trough having sides adapted to raise said cups from a horizontal to a substantially adhesive to said end of the web before the same is cut oil into a cup blank.
15. In a machine of the character described for making paper containers from a web of paper; a folding mechanism comprising a pair of interrupted rolls, a feeding mechanism for feeding the end of said web to said folding mechanism, a cutting device adapted to cut oil the end of said web to form a container blank therefrom, and a table on which said blank rests during the cutting operation; said table being disposed in a position whereby the said blank is supported with the forward portion thereof in position to be grasped by the said interrupted rolls upon completion of the cutting operation.

In a machine of the character described for forming paper cups from a web of paper, a folding mechanism comprising a plurality of rolls including a pair of creasing rolls 'at the forward end of said folding mechanism, a feeding mechanism adapted to feed the end of a web of paper to said folding mechanism in position to be engaged by said creasing rolls during the rotation thereof, and a cutting device-adapted to cut off the endvof said web to form a cup blank therefrom while in position to be engaged by said creasing rolls; the said creasing rolls being cut away to prevent engagement of said blank while the same is being cut 03' from said blank.

In a machine of the character described for forming paper cups from a web of paper, a folding mechanism comprising. a plurality of rolls including a pair of creasing rolls at the forward end of said folding mechanism, a feeding mechanlsmadapted to feed the end of a web of paper to said folding mechanism in position to be engaged by said creasing rolls; a table on which said end is supported during the cutting off operation, and means for clamping said end upon said table while the same is being cut oif from said blank.

A machine for making cups of the character described from a web of paper comprising a folding mechanism, a feeding mechanism comprising a pair of rotatable shafts, feed-rolls on said shafts for feeding the end of said web to said folding mechanism, a vertically movable reciprocating cutting device for cutting off the end of said web in the form of a cup blank and means on said rotatable shafts for operating said cutting device.

A machine for making cups of the character described from a web of paper comprising a folding mechanism, a feeding mechanism for feeding the end of said blank to said folding mechanism, said feeding mechanism comprising a bed, a cutting die mounted on said bed and comprising a vertically movable reciprocating member adapted to cut oil a portion of said web near the end thereof and projecting said cut oil portion through. said bed, a pair of feed rolls in said feeding mechanism for intermittently moving said web through said cutting device, a pair of rotatable shafts on which said feed rolls are mounted and 'means on said shafts for directly operating. the said cutting device in synchronism with said feed rolls.

21. A machine of the character described for making paper containers from a Web of paper comprising a folding mechanism, a feeding mechanism comprising a pair of rotatable shafts, feed rolls on said shafts for intermittently feeding the end of said web to said folding mechanism,
-a cutting die for cutting off the end of said web into the form of a container blank, and means operable by said rotatable shafts for continuously drawing said web from a roll thereof and maintaining a slack in said web between the intermittently moving portion thereof and that portion which is continuously drawn from the said roll.

In a machine of the character described for making cups from a web of paper, a folding mechanism, a feeding mechanism for feeding the end of said web in position to be engaged-by said folding mechanism, said feeding mechanism comprising a frame, feed shafts mounted on said frame, feed rolls on said shafts for feeding said web, and a cutting device removablymounted as a complete unit upon said frame; said cutting device comprising a bed forming the base thereof, a female die mounted on said base, vertical members on said base, a vertically movable reciprocating male cutting member movable upon said vertical members, and means upon said rotatable shafts for directly operating the said male member of the cutting device in synchronism with said feed rolls.

A machine of the character described for producing cups from a web, means for feeding the end of said web to said machine, means for cutting off a portion from said web and thereby forming a cup blank upon said machine, a plurality of rolls for moving said blank through said machines in the direction of its axis, means for partly folding said blank by folding the two comer portions thereof upon its central portion, means for applying adhesive upon said partly folded blank at a point spaced from the forward end thereof and folding means for folding the said forward end transversely back upon the same and said adhesive. A machine of the character described for producing cups from a web; the said machine comprising a folding mechanism, means for feeding the endof said web to said folding mechanism, a cutting device for cutting off the said end comprising means for folding the side portion of said blank in overlapping position on the central portion thereof, means for creasing the said partly folded blank transversely at points spaced from the forward portion thereof, means for applying adhesive back of said transverse crease and folding means for folding the said forward portion upon said partly folded blank and into contact with said adhesive.

In a machine for producing paper containers of the character described from a web of paper, a mechanism for feeding the end of said web to said machine, means for cutting off the end of said web and thereby forming a container blank, folding mechanism comprising means for partly folding the said blank by folding the side portions thereof in overlapping position upon the central portion of said blank on lines diverging from the axis of said central portion, means for forming a crease upon the said partly folded blank on a line extending across the overlapping area of said side portions, and separate means for folding the said partly folded blank on said crease.

In a machine for making paper containers of the character described, the method for stacking the said containers which consists of delivering them substantially horizontally upon a surface and beneath the preceding containers, moving them forwardlyon'said surface to accumulate them thereon and thereby permit them to gradually rise to a substantially vertical position.

In a machine for converting a webof paperinto receptacles of the character described, the combination of means for feeding the said web lengthwise into said machine, a cutter for cutting off a section of said web, at the end there'- of, and thereby forming a'receptacle blank therefrom, means for holding said section against movement while it is being cut off from said web, and folding mechanism adapted to receive said blank after it is cut off from the said web andfold it into a receptacle;
