Be it known that l, Moses B. DisxIN, a 'citizen of the United States, Vresiding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Applying Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a machine for applying tape to boxes and other objects.
The object of the invention is the provision of such a machine embodying a novel mechanism for feeding the boxes or other objects and tape, and means for cutting the tape and pressing it down on the boxes or objects.
.- A further object is the provision of such a mechanism which is so constructed and operable thatit can be adjusted for boxes or objects of different sizes, and to apply pieces of tape of different lengths.
The invention also includes novel features of construction to enhance the utility and efficiency of the machine, and to render the construction and operation comparatively simple.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The machine embodies a table l mounted ona suitable frame l', and a magazine 2 for the folded cardboard or paper boxes, Vor other objects, is provided on the table near the rear end thereof. transversely on the table, and the upright rear members 5 adjustable longitudinally on the table, said members 4 and 5 being adapted to behadjusted for boxes, blanks, or objects of different sizes. Although the machine is particularly intended for pasting tape over the meeting edges of folded box blanks to attach the walls of the box together at one corner, it is a-pparent that the machine can be used for various other purposes when it is desired to apply a tape l to an object for one purpose or another. The folded boxes or blanks 6 are placed in a stack in the magazine 2 .on the table and are-fed forwardly under the wall 3 longitudinally over the table for the taping operation.
In order to feed the boxes 6 forwardly from under the stack in the magazine, a feeder slide 7 'is mounted for longitudinal movement inna slot 8 in the table l under the magazine, and this slide 7 has longitudinal slots 9 in which are mounted for longitudinal adjustment the blocks 10 having the fingers 11 to engage the rear edge of the 'lowermost box and shove it forwardly when the slide 7 is moved in that direction. The blocks l0 can` be adjusted to different longitudinal positions along the slide 7, such as by means of an adjusting screw 11 or the like. This enables the fingers 11 to be adjusted for boxes or objects of different sizes, and also enables the feeder to be regulated so as to move the box or object forwardly the desired distance withrespect to the tape applying mechanism. Thus, if the fingers 1l are adjacent to the boxes when the slide 7 is in its rearmost position, then the box will be fed forwardly the maximum distance, whereas if the fingers 11 are shifted rearwardly of the slide 7 so that the slide 7 will move forwardly a certain distance before the fingers 11 contact with the lowermost vbox in the magazine, then the box will not be fed forwardly the same distance.
In this way, the feeder is not only adjustable to feed blanks of different sizes, but vis The feeder above described is for the purpose of moving the blanks or objects from under the stack in the magazine to a position for the application of the tape, and a second feeder is employed for feeding the blanks or objects after the forward end of the tape is put down on the blank. Thus, a feeder wheel 16 is mounted on a transverse shaft 17 below the table 1 and its upper portion extends through an opening in the table so that the blanks pass over and rest on said wheel, in order that when the blanks are pressed down on the wheel and the wheel rotated, said wheel will feed the blanks. The wheel16 is rotated a predetermined amount, and it has an intermittent forward rotation, the amount of rotation of which can be regulated for blanks of different sizes. A pinion 18 secured on the shaft 17 meshes with a gear wheel 19 mounted on a shaft 20, and an oscillatory arm 21 is carried by the shaft and has pivoted thereto a gripping` member 22 sliding on an angular flange 23 provided on one side of the gear wheel 19, said member 22 sliding loosely on said flange, when the arm 21 swings rearwardly, and gripping said flange and turning the wheel with the arm when the arm moves forwardly. The arm 21 is connected by a link 24 with a wiist pin 25 carried by a block 26 adjusted for radial movement in a disk 28 mounted on the driving shaft 12, said block 26 being adjusted by means of a. screw 27 or the like to vregulate the throw of the arm 21. This enables the amount of movement of the arm 21 to be regulated from a minimum to a maximum amount,`in order to regulate the amount of peripheral movement of the feeder wheel 16 according to the distance it is desired to move the blank or object during the application of the tape thereto. Coming to the tape applying and cutting' devices, there is a frame 29 overhanging the table 1 and supported at one side thereof for the passage of the blanks under said frame. A slide 30 is mounted for vertical movement in a guide in the frame 29 above the wheel 15, and carries a tape applying roller 31, the position of which with respect to the blank 30 is adjusted by means of a screw 32 or other well known means. This roller 31 when moved downwardly will press the tape down on the blank, and also press the blank down on the wheel 15 so that the blankwill be fed by said wheel and the tape pasted on the blank during its' movement. Immediately in rear of the roller 31, the frame 29 has a vertical guide 33 with a'shear bar 34 at its lower end, and a slide 35 is movable vertically in the guide 33 and has a cutter 36 at its lower end to shear past the shear bar 34, to sever the tape where it passes over the shear bar 34.

F rom the roller 38, the paste passes over guide rollers 40 and 41, and thence downwardly under a roller 42 supported by a pair of guide rods 43 projecting rear- A slide 44 is movable on the rods '43, and is connected by a link 45 with a rearwardly extending lug 46 on the slide A35, whereby the vertical movement of the slide 35 will move the slide 44 horizontally or longitudinally on the rods 43. The link 45 has a turn buckle 47 for adjusting it to regulate the movement of the slide 44. lt will be noted that when the slide 35 moves upwardly, the link`45 in being pulled with the slide 35, will pull the slide 44 forwardly, and when the slide 35 moves downwardly, the link 45 willshove the slide 44 rearwardly. This slide 44 has hanger 43 with rollers 49 between which the tape extends forwardly from the roller 42,A and said rollers 49 holding the tape therebetween, and pulling it forwardly with the slide 44. v The hanger 48 also has a forwardly extending finger 50 projecting over the shear bar 34 to support the forward terminal of the tape. Thus, when the slide 35 is raised, and the slide 44 moved forwardly,v the tape will be pulled with the rollers 49 and moved across the shear bar 34 to a point under the clamping roller 31 Vto be pressed down thereby onto the blank.
A series of pressing rollers 51 are disposed in a longitudinal line iii front of the roller 31, and are forced down tightly onto the tape and blanks by means of the screws 52 or the like, in order to press the tape tightly down on the blanks to adhere thereto.
Tn order to press the tape into the crevice cr slit between the adjacent edges of the blank, a longitudinal wire or rod 53 is disposed under the rollers 51 which are provided with vannular grooves partially receiving the wire, which extends downwardly.V slightly from the peripheries of therollers over the meeting edges of the blanks so as to press the tape down between its edges into the space or crevice between the edges` of the blanks. The rear end of the wire 53 has an upwardly projecting shank 54 slidable in a lug 55 provided on the frame 29,
and a spring 56 pressesthe-shank 54 down Y to hold the wire snugly on the tape, and permit it to yield upwardly. TheY downward movement of the wire 53 at its rear end is limited by an adjustable collar 57 on 54 to seat downwardly on the One lever K link 61 with a lever 62 that engages a cam groove 63 of a cam wheel 64 on the shaft v12. The groove 63 is so shaped as to swing the lever 58 in one direction when the lever 14 is moved forwardly and the armV 21 moved rearwardly, and to move the'lever 58 in the opposite direction when the movement of the lever 14 and arm 21 is reversed, the
movement of the lever 58 occurring when the lever 14 and arm 21 change their direction of movement at the ends of their strokes. A lever 65 is also fulcrumed, as at 66, to the .frame 29 and has one arm connected, as at 67, to the slide 30 for moving said slide up and down, and the other arm of the lever 65 has a pin or stud 68 projecting within a slot 69 in the lever 58, whereby the lever 65 is operated by the lever 58 with a limited lost motion. Vhen the lever 58 is swung to raise the Slide 35, it will move the pin 68 upwardly so as to move the roller 31 downwardly, and when the lever 58 is swung to movethe slide 35 and cutter 36 down'- wardly, the lever 65 is swung to raise the roller 31, so that the roller 31 and cutter 36 alternate.
kGrages or guides 70 are mounted on the table 1 at the opposite sides and are adjustable transversely to guide the blanks or objects in the proper longitudinal line of movement, so that the meeting edges of the blanks pass centrally under the tape applying means. v
The operation of the machine is as follows:
`Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the mechanism in position to start the operation, the slide 7 being ready to move forwardly, with the wheel 31 raised. Then, as the shaft 12 completes one half of a revolution, the lever 14 is swung forwardly and the arm 21 rearwardly, the gripping member 22 sliding loosely back on. the flange 23 so that the wheel 16 remains at a standstill, while the slide 7 will move the lowermost blank in the magazine forwardly the desired distance to bring the particular point of the blank on which the forward end of the tape is to be applied, under the center of the roller 31. The feeder Vslide 7 thus moves the blank forwardly to the proper position for the application of the forward end of the tape to the blank. Then, as the forward movement of the slide 7 is completed, and the lever 14 and arm 21 start to reverse, the cam 64 will swing the lever 62 so as to pull the link 61 downwardly, thereby raising the slide 35 and cutter 36, and as the cutter is raised, the slide 44 is moved forwardly, thereby feeding the tape forwardly with the finger 50 to bring the forward end ofthe tape under the roller 31. The forward end of the tape thus projects under said roller 31 beyond the end of the finger 50, and this movement takes place before the lever 58 has moved sufficiently to move the lever 65, and during the completion of the movement of the lever 58, the lever 55 is swung to move the roller 31 downwardly, thereby pressing the forward end of the tape down on the blank. At this moment, the slide 7 starts its rearward movement, and the arm 21 moves forwardly, the member 22 gripping the flange 23 and turning the gear wheel 19 with the arm 21, whereby the feed wheel 16 is rotated, therebyfeeding the blank which rests onsaid wheel by the pressure exerted by the roller 31. The amount of peripheral movement of the wheel 16 is controlled, as above eX- plained, by the position of the wrist pin 25, and this will also control the length of the piece of tape applied to the blank. The wheel 16 thus rotates a predetermined amount during the forward movement of the arm 21 and the rearward movement of the slide 7 to place a desired length of tape on the blank, and as the parts resume the position illustrated in F ig. 2, the cam 64 swings the lever 62 to raise the link 61. This swings the lever 58 to move the slide 35 and cutter 36 downwardly, thereby cutting or shearing the tape 37, and withdrawing the finger 50 from over the cutting edge of the shear bar 34 before the cutter 36 comes into operation, because the slide 44 is moved rearwardly as the slide 35 is moved downwardly. As the slide 35 completes its movement, the lever 65 is moved by the lever 58, thereby raising the roller 31, so that the parts are restored to the position shown in Fig. 2, to repeat theioperation.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed asnew is 1. A tape applying machine embodying tape applying means movable to present the end of a tape and press it against an object, means` for feeding objects past said tape applying means and operable to move the objects to a predetermined position with respect to the tape applying means for the application ofthe tape and to then move the object a predetermined distance according to the length of tape to bel applied to the object, and means for cutting the tape at a lselected point of the object after the object has been moved as last stated.
2. A tape applying machine embodying means for feeding objects to a predetermined position, means movable for applying the end of the tape to the object in said'position, means for feeding the object after the tape is applied for a predetermined distance according to the length of tape to be applied,
and means for cutting the tape at a selected point of the object after the object has been moved the predetermined distance.
3. A tape applying machine embodying tape applying means, means for feeding objects to. and past said tape applying means and operable for feeding an object to various predetermined positions with respect to the -structed and adjustable for feeding the objects to various predetermined positions, tape 'applying means for applying the end of a tape to the object in the predetermined position, feeding means operable for feeding the objects after the tape is applied and constructed and adjustable to move the objects various predetermined distances, and means for cutting the tape at a selected point of the object after the object has moved the predetermined distance.
5. A tape ,applying machine embodying means for, feeding a tape to be applied to an object, means for feeding objects to a predetermined position with respect to the tape and then moving the object a predetermined distance, means for pressing the tape against the object in the predetermined position, and means for cutting the tape at a selected point of the object when the object has moved a predetermined distance.
6. A tape applying machine embodying tape applying means for applying a tape to an object in a predetermined position, feeding means constructed and operable for moving the object a predetermined distance after Vthe tape is applied according to the length Vof the strip of tape to be applied, and means for cutting the tape at a selected point of the object after the object has moved the predetermined distance.
7. A tape applying machine embodying a feeder wheel, means for feeding a tape to an object bearing against said wheel, means vfor pressing the tape against the object and the object against said wheel to apply the tape to the object and simultaneously feed the object, and means for cutting the tape when aid wheel has` rotated a predetermined amount in moving the object.
8. A tape applying machine Vembodying means for feeding an object a predetermined distance, means for feeding a tape to the object, means forpressing the tape when fed against the obj ect and bringing the feeding means into operation, and means operable for cutting the tape when the object has moved the predetermined distance.
9. A tape applying machine embodying a feeder wheel rotatable a predetermined amount for feeding an object, means for pressing a tapeagainst ythe object and the object against said wheel to feed the object a predetermined distance, means for feeding a tape between said pressing means and object, and means for cutting the tape vwhen the object has moved the predetermined distance. j Y v 10. tape applying machine embodying means for feeding an object, means ior pressing atape against the object, acutter for cutting the tape, tape feeding means movable back and forth and having a portion to move past the cutter for bringing the end of the tape between .the object and said tape pressing means, and means for retracting the tape feeding means when Lthe cutter is brought into operation and for retracting the cutter when the tape feeding meansl is advanced.
