INSPECTION WRAPPER FOR NEGKTIE SETS Filed NOV. 25, 1956 Patented Jan. 11, 1938 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFMIE.
INSPECTION -WRAPPER, FOR NECKTIE SETS Oscar'Markowitz, New York, N. Y.
Application November 25, 1936, Serial No. 112,633
7 8 Claims.
'This invention relates to wrappersfor neckties that are sold in sets to retailers, and has particu- "lar reference to inspection devices "for such wrappers. V r
In the sale of neckties to retailers, the neckties are generally sold in sets of one-half dozen, those of each sethaving the same design, but each necktie of the set being in a different color. Certain retailers'will not take the set, ibutwill send it back, if it contains one or more-colors which they do not favor. It is therefore desirable to "facilitate inspection o'f'the colorsof all theneckties while the latter arehoused in the :wrapper. Otherretailers make it a practice to examine thelining and'the insidelabel, if any,"of the neckties, as well asto count the necktie's. It is therefore desirable 'that adequate means be provided forsuch inspectionofthe'neckties without requiring the dismantling -or destruction of the special wrapper, and possible soiling'orc'reasing "of the 'neckties if the set is to'be returned-"to'the manufacturer. V V
. It is there-fore an object of the invention to provide a device having improved means to facilitate inspection of the neckties while normally preventing soiling or'creasing thereof.
Another object of the inventi'oniis the provision of a particularly simpleand cheap improved 'one piece necktie wrapper which shall conveniently *andcompactly house a series of neckties for easy and reliable handlingand shipment thereof.
Other objects and advantages of theinvention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
With the aforesaid objects in view, the-invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangeme'nts of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, anddllustrate'd in'the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the "several views.
In the drawing:
.Figure l is aperspective isometric view of a device embodying theinvention, in position for inspection of the design ofthe necktie setas well as of the colors and. other qualities of the individual neckties.
,Fig. 2.is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan-view of-a blank embodyingthe invention, with a necktie :shown in dot-dash ,lines.
4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the -tdevice:shown'in 1 :in fully closed position,
with the series of neckties indicated in dot-dash lines.
The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realizedwhen all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, l0 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same may include'a'wrapper H for a series of neckties I2. I
The wrapper mayinclude a one piece member of sheet material such as paper. Preferably the said material is relatively stiff, and it may con sist of a rather heavy wrapping paper, for instance, of the type known in the trade as 80 pound paper.
The member I I may have a plurality of spaced preformed fold lines l3, l4 and I5, which define longitudinally extending sections I6, l1, l8 and Hi. All of these sections may in general taper toward one end of the wrapper, in accordance with'the width andtaper of-the neckties.
Preferably certain of said sections successively increase in width. For example, the section I8 is wider than the section l9. The section I! is wider than the section l3; the section i6 may be regarded as a longitudinal closure flap. Hence thepart l9 may constitute the inner or insert section for the series of folded neckties, about which the other sections can be enwrappingly folded.
The insert section 19 may have an end portion -atqits small end cut away as at 20 from the fold line I5 to the edge of the member II to accommodate thefold portions 2| of the neckties l2.
Foran immediate inspection of the design of the set of neckties, the section I 7 may have a cut out orwindow opening 22, since this section I! normally constitutes the front of the device ill. To prevent accidental soiling of a necktie at the window 22, and for the additional purpose of releasably locking the wrapping H closed, a loop element 23 may be slipped over the package ID from the small end thereof, and may consist of transparent material so that, if positioned over thewindow 22, it closes the same while permitting a-view of the necktie design. The element 23 may be arranged to snugly engage around a the wrapper at the region of said window. The element 23 thus accomplishes a double purpose.
However, the window 22 is insufficient for inspection of the colors of the neckties of the package [0, since it permits a view of only the outer or topmost necktie. Nor is access available through said window to all the neckties, and without seriously disarranging and distorting them. Of course, any structure must be arranged to provide for ample strength in the package, compactness, and ease of accessibility to all of the neckties.
Hence I provide an inspection means 24, which may be formed by making a slit 25 transverse to the section l6, up to the fold line [3, and relatively near to the large end of the package. There thus results a tongue 26, which with the :ad-
jacent portion 21 of the section I! may consti tute a flap that is foldable back as shown in Fig. 1. The portion 2! may be defined by a fold line 28 extending from the closed end of the slit 25 to the diagonally opposed corner of the section 11, whereby the part I! is in the nature of a triangle whose altitude is substantially equal to the length of the flap 26.
If the element 23 be moved down to overlap the means 24, it may serve to hold the same as well as the entire package closed.
The inspection means 24 may include a suitable closure or locking means, for instance, a tongue 29 formed on the inner end of the flap 26 and adapted to lock into a slit 30 in the section 18 when the wrapper is folded up.
In use, a set of neckties of like design but of different colorsare placed above one another in stack form, this stack being centrally folded as at 2|, with the folds lying in the cut out 20, as the stack is laid about the insert section l9. This may be done with the latter section overlying the section I 8. Hence the front ends 31 of the neckties lie above the insert section [9, and the rear ends between the said section and the section l8. Then the section I! is folded over the front ends of the neckties, and the section IB is folded under the section 19 to thus provide a. four ply relatively stiff package. Then the element 23 is slipped in place, and the tongue 29 locked into the slot 30. The successively increasing width of certain of the wrapper sections permits the neckties to lie smooth without accidental creasing at the fold lines of the wrapper.
The design of the neckties may be inspected through the window 22 and closure 23. For individual inspection of the neckties, the tongue 29 is released, and the means 24 opened as shown, to permit the colors to be viewed, and the necktie front ends to be successively folded over as shown for inspection of the lining, the label and the like If the package is to be shipped back, repacking is unnecessary by the retailer or manufacturer.
I claim:
1. A packaging device for folded neckties, including a one piece member of relatively stiff paper and having preformed fold lines extending from end to end thereof to define fold sections that taper generally toward one end of the member to fit the neckties that are folded around one of the members as an insert for the neckties, said member being open ended in the folded condition thereof, and the insert section having a cut out at the small end of the member to accommodate the fold portions of the neckties, and one of the fold sections having a slit forming a flap that can be opened to expose the neckties without opening the device.
2. A packaging device for folded neckties, including a one piece member of relatively stiif paper and having preformed fold lines extending from end to end thereof to define fold sections that taper generally toward one end of the member to fit the neckties that are folded around-one of the members as an insert for the neckties, said member being open ended in the folded condition thereof, and an endless band removably sleeved over the member in the folded condition so as to extend transversely around the member, the different sections mutually bracing each other with the endless band located intermediate of the ends of the package and serving to hold the member in reliably folded condition, and one fold section having a slit defining a flap at the large end of the member to permit the latter to be opened to expose the neckties without otherwise opening the device.
