ADJUSTABLE STRAP FOR LEGGINGS, GAI'I'ERS, AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 29, 1936 a- Z QgZQM A iforriey Patented Jan. 4, 1938 UNITED STATES ADJUSTABLE STRAP FOR LEGGINGS, GAIT- ERS AND THE LIKE Louis Horowitz, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor of onehalf to Abraham Wilkow, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application September 29, 1936, Serial No. 103,180
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to leggings or gaiters and has for its principal object to provide a strap adapted to extend under the arch of the wearer for securing the legging in place and embodies means for adjusting the position of the strap relative to the heel of the shoe of the wearer. It is well known that many persons, particularly children are required to wear orthopedically fitted shoes having heels of different.
sizes for the purpose of providing a stronger support for the arch of the foot. Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide a strap for gaiters or leggings which may be adjustably secured in position to the lower end of the legging or gaiter when such instances require the placing of the strap forwardly from the position in which it is usually worn.
A further object is to provide a strap of this character which is interchangeable to the right or left garment, which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:--
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view of the lower end of a left legging showing one of the adjustable straps in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the inner side of the other adjustable strap.
35 Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 1 showing in dotted lines the strap of Figure 2 applied to the left legging.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed 40 a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a left legging or gaiter split longitudinally as shown at 6 and connected by a separable fastener of a type well known in the art and indicated at I. To the side of the legging opposite from the split side 6, and adjacent the lower edge thereof is a buckle 8 to which the free end of a strap 9 is removably secured, said strap being designed to extend transversely under the shoe of the wearer at a point beneath the arch thereof in the usual manner.
The opposite end of the strap 9 is formed with a lateral extension It), said lateral extension being substantially at right angles to the remaining portion of the strap. At each end of the extension lll is secured one part of a pair of snap fasteners H, the other portions of said snap fasteners being secured to the legging adjacent its lower edge and at each side of the split portion 6, as indicated at I2.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the strap 9 is capable of being secured to the left legging in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawing whereby the arch portion of the strap 9 will be placed in a forward position to permit the strap being worn with a shoe having a large heel, or if desired, the straps shown in Figure 2 may be secured in the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawing to the left legging whereby the arch portion of the strap 9 will occupy a relatively rearward position. It is to be understood that the straps are preferably constructed of leather and are similarly finished on each side and are entirely removable from the leggings and are interchangeable to permit of the strap shown in Figure 1 to be used either on a right legging or a left legging, and the strap shown in Figure 2 to be used either on a left legging or a right legging for the use in the manner indicated.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:--
1. In combination, a legging having one part of a pair of snap fastener sets secured thereto adjacent its lower edge, said snap fastener parts being arranged in spaced relation and a strap having one end removably attached to the side of the legging opposite from said snap fastener parts and adapted to extend under the arch of the foot, an angular extension on the other end of said strap and having the other parts of said snap fastener sets secured thereto adjacent the ends of said angular extension, said last mentioned fastener parts being capable of securing the strap to either a right or left legging each of which has its fastener elements correspondingly arranged for selectively positioning the strap forwardly or rearwardly with respect to the arch of the wearer 2. A legging having a buckle on one side adjacent its lower edge, a strap extending under the legging and having one end secured to said buckle, an angular extension on the other end of the strap and extending laterally from one edge thereof, and cooperating fastening means carried by the legging and said angular extension for detachably and reversibly securing the same to either a right or left legging each of which has its fastener elements correspondingly arranged in a manner to selectively position the strap forwardly or rearwardl'y with respect to the arch.
3. In a strap for leggings, a strap member of L-shaped formation and arranged with its base and upright elements in an inverted position, means for detachably and reversibly securing the base end of the strap adjacent the lower end at corresponding sides of either a right or left leg ging to selectively position the strap forwardly or rearwardly under the arch of the foot of the wearer and means for detachably securing the other end of the strap to a relatively opposite side of the legging.
