My invention relates to a garment and has special reference to the type of childrens clothing known as leggings.
One object of my invention is to provide a garment of this type which will be relatively veasy to manufacture and which can be quickly put on the child and quickly taken off.
Another object is to provide a garment which may serve as a complete outer garment, covering the entire torso and legs.
Another object is to provide a legging which will afford a maximum of comfort to the wearer.
Other objects will be apparent to persons familiar with the art as my invention is disclosed to them.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which forms part of the specification, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a garment made in accordance with my invention when in use.
fFig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fastener and the instep strap.
The leggings illustrated in the drawing comprise an upper portion 5, 6 and a lower portion 7, 8. The upper Aportion is adaptedto cover the torso above the waist and is appropriately cut out to fit around the arms and the neck. The back portion 6 has forwardly extending flaps 10 which are adapted to pass over the shoulders. The front portion 5 has upwardly extending ilaps 11 which are adapted to be separatively fastened to the flaps 10. Whereas many kinds of separative fasteners may be used, the drawing shows buttons 12 sewed to flaps 10 with rubber thread, the flaps 11 being adapted tov receive the buttons. lIt is obvious that the buttons may be sewed on flaps 11 instead of flaps 10.
An elastic strip may be placed at the seam between the rear upper portion 6 and the rear lower portion 8, this elastic strip serving to fit the back of the garment to the wearer. Similarly, an elastic strip may be placed at 'the seam between the front upper portion 5 and the front lower portion 7, this elastic strip serving to fit the front of the garment to the wearer. The seam 14 between the front upper portion 5 and the front lower portion 7 is cut at a bias or angle and is provided with additional material at this region for comfort when the child bends, stretches, or twists; this excess material -is supplementary and additional to the natural elasticity of the material itself, and it not only provides comfort but it also prevents tearing of the garment. The back seam 13 between the rear portions 6 and 8 may also have such a bias or excess cut to provide fullness. Ordinarily, the elastic seam holds the excess material against the body of the wearer, providing a 5 neat appearance.
Along the full length of the garment, from armhole to foot, the legging is completely separable. I close the separable portions during wear by means of the slide fastener 16 and slide 17 shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The slide 17 is, adapted to lock the slide fastener, so that when the slide 17 is turned up, as shown in Fig. 3, the fastener can not be separated farther. If found desirable, a snap fastener 18 may be placed at the top of the separable portions to aid in starting the slide fastener 16 and slide 17. Another snap fastener 20, 21 is placed at the bottom of the separable leg portions, the male element 21 being on the ily member 22.
An instep strap 25, of rubber, orv leather, is adapted to pass under the shoe of the wearer. The strap 25 may be sewn or otherwise permanently attached to the legging, or, as shown, it may be attached by snap fasteners 26, 27 and 28, 29, the elements 27 and 29 being female, and the elements 26 and 28 male.
My garment may be made of wool, vegetable fiber, leather, or any other material used for/apparel. Of course, it may be made in all sizes, for 30 adults as well as children. It may be adapted for use as undergarments, pajamas, or other forms of wear. i
It will be seen that vmy invention provides a unitary garment which is particularly useful for 3- children. It may be removed by simply unfastening the straps 25 and t buttons 12 and separating the slide fastener .l 6. The weight of the garment is borne by the' shoulder flaps 10 and 11, so that no pins are n/ecessary, and the wearer has 40 no constriction at /the waist. The bias'cut 14 and the rubber thread for the buttons l2 permit comfort and stretching.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is:
1. A bifurcate'd union garment, comprising a trousers portion extending from hip to foot and a sleeveless Waist portion extending from neck to hip, the waist portion having separable shoulder 50 straps, the trousers portion being continuously joined with the waist portion to form a complete covering for the torso and legs of the wearer, the outer side edges 4of the trousers portion and the waist portion being completely separable from each other from armhole to foot, whereby the separable shoulder straps and the separable outer side edges of theY trousers portion and the waist portion cooperate to permit ease of dressing and of removal anda slide fastener for separatively fastening the separable edges. Y
2. A bifurcated union garment, comprising a trousers portion extending from hip to foot and a sleeveless Waist p itic-nl extending from neck to hip, the waist pchaving separable shoulder strapsfthe shrr ps having buttons which are sewed to ith elastic thread, the Waist portion uously joined with the
