This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety lock device.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a safety lock device characterized by a fiat member adapted to be inserted between the free edge of a door element and the adjacent edge of a door jamb and provided with a means for holding the door in a closed position regardless of the direction in which it swings.
Still further it is proposed to provide the flat member with a lateral projection at one end engageable against either the door element or the jamb element for preventing the flat member from being pushed from between the adjacent faces of the door element and the jamb element.
Still further it is proposed to provide an arm pivotally mounted on the other end of the flat member on the side opposed to the projection and engageable against the opposite element to the one engaged by the projection to prevent the door from being opened when the lock device is in position. i
Still further it is proposed to provide the free end of the arm with a head adjustably mounted thereon to permit the device to be properly adjusted to accommodate doors of different thicknesses.
A further object of this invention is to construct a lock device having an arm constructed so. of telescopic sections and to provide a means for holding the sections extended to various degrees.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, refer- 35. ence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The safety lock device, according to this in- ;yvention, is to be. used in combination with a door element In hingedly' mounted relative to a jambv element II. The lock device includes a flat member l2 adapted to be rested upon the edge portion of the jamb element II and to be passed between the adjacent faces of the jamb element and the door element as clearly shown in Fig. 1. One side of the flat member I2 is formed with a lateral projection 12 near one end thereof and is engageable against either of the elements for preventing the fiat member from being pushed from between the adjacent faces of the elements in the closed position of the door element l0.
An arm I3 is pivotally mounted at the other end of the flat member I2 on the side opposed 15 to the lateral projection l2 A pin M passes through the overlapping portions of the arm l3 and flat member l2 and constitutes the means forpivotally supporting the arm upon the flat member. The arm I3 is arranged upon the end of the" 20 flat member in such a manner that it is adapted to swing in a plane adjacent the plane ofthe flat member.
A head I5 is adjustably mounted upon the free v end of the arm 13 and is adapted to abut against. 25 one of the elements ID or II for holding the door against swinging. The adjustable mounting of, the head l5 comprises a screw 16 fixedly attached to the inner face of the head 15. and threadedly engaged into an opening I! formed in the adja-. cent end of the arm l3. When the arm 13 is pivoted to a position illustrated by the dot and dash lines I 3' in Fig. 1 the head I5 may be extended by rotating it to cause it to engage tightly against either of the elements I 0 or II, as shown by the dot and dash lines I 5', which in turn holds the projection I 2 tightly against the other of theelements III or H. l
The operation of this device is as follows:
For looking a door against hinging the door element is first moved to an open position and the face of the fiat member l2 having the projection l2 is rested against the jamb element H with the projection It" engaging against the outer face of the jamb element I I The door element In is then swung to a closed position with the flat member disposed between the adjacent edges of the jamb element H and the door element In. The arm I3 is then swung from the full line position in Fig. 1 to the dot and dash 5 position in Fig. 1 and the head I 5 is extended therefrom to rigidly bear against the inner face of the door element l0.
, If the door element swings in the opposite direction from that shown in Fig. 1 the door may be held in a closed position by engaging the projection IZ against the outer face of the door element I0, and the head against the inner face of the jamb element II. In other words, if the door swings in the opposite direction, the position of the parts I2 and I5 are reversed.
According to the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 3-5, the arm I3 is constructed from separate sections l3 and l3 telescopically engaged one within the other. The section |3 is pivotally supported on the end of the fiat member I2 by means of the pin HI passing therethrough.
A means is provided for holding the section l3 extended to various degrees upon the section I3 This means comprises a plurality of openings I8 formed along one of the faces of the section l3 and alignable with an opening I9 formed in the adjacent face of the section I3 A peg 20 is adapted to be passed through the opening I9 and the adjacent aligned opening I8 for holding the sections I3 and I?) together as a rigid unit. The free end of the section I3; is adapted to engage into a hollow 2| formed in the section l3. The hollow 2| extends only partially throughout the length of the section I3 and a second hollow 22 is formed in the section I3 at the end of the hollow 2|.
A block 23 is slidably engaged within the hollow 22 and the screw 16 mounted upon the head I5 threadedly engages into an opening I'I formed in the block 23. The adjustment between the telescopic sections l3 and I3 is a coarse one permitting spaced adjustments of about of an inch, depending on the space between the openings Hi. The use of the head l5 and the screw I6 permits finer adjustments to compensate for the distance between the openings I8 to permit the head I5 to be tightly engaged against the adjacent face of either of the elements.
A latch device is provided for holding the arm IS in a fixed position when the lock device is in operation and consists of a latch member 24 having one of its ends securely attached to the extended end of the peg .20. The other end of the latch element 24 extends through an opening I 25 formed on the side of the hollow 22 and has its ends 24* bent to extend into the hollow 22. The rear face of the block 23 is formed with an opening 26 into which the end 24 of the lock device 24 is adapted to be engaged when the block 23 is moved to its rear position. The screw I6 freely passes through the outer wall of the section I3 so that the block 23 may be moved longitudinally of the section I3 to engage and disengage the openings 26 from the end 24 of the latch member 24.
The latch member 24 is constructed from a strip of rigid material and when the end 24 thereof engages into the opening 26. the peg 29 will be rigidly maintained in position within the openings 18 and i9. A leaf spring 2! has one of its ends securely attached to one of the faces of the section I3 and the other of its ends engaging against the latch member 24 for urging it towards the section l3 to cause the peg 20 to be engaged into the openings I9 and I8.
The operation of this form of the invention is as follows:
The lock device is associated with the jamb element and the door element in a manner similar to that described relative to the previous form of the invention, but when the arm I3 is swung to a position adjacent the fiat member I2 the section I3 may be extended from thesection I3 to bring the head l5 as close to the adjacent face of the associated element permitting the head I5 to then be moved away from the section I3 to engage it tightly against the element to maintain the door elements in its closed position. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A safety lock device for a door element hingedly mounted to a jamb element, comprising a flat member adapted to rest on the jamb element and pass between said elements and having a lateral projection atone end portion engageable against one of said elements, an arm pivotally mounted at one end on the other end portion of said flat member so as to swing in a parallel plane adjacent the plane of said flat member, and a head adjustably mounted on the free end of said arm longitudinally thereof and adapted to abut one of said elements to hold the door element from. hinging, said arm being constructed of separate sections telescopically engaged one within the other, and a means for holding said sections in various extended positions.
2. A safety lock device for a door element hingedly mounted to a jamb element, comprising a fiat member adapted to rest on the jamb element and pass between said elements and having a lateral projection at one end portion engageable against one of said elements, an arm pivotally mounted at one end on the other end portion of said fiat member so as to swing in a parallel plane adjacent the plane of said fiat member, and a head adjustably mounted on the free end of said arm longitudinally thereof and adapted to abut one of said elements to hold the door element from hinging, said arm being constructed of separate sections telescopically engaged one Within the other, and a means for holding said sections in various extended positions, said means comprising a peg engageable through an opening formed in one of said sections and selectively engageable with one of a plurality of openings formed in the other section, and a latch means for rigidly maintaining said peg in position within said openings.
3. A safety lock device for a door element hingedly mounted to a jamb element, comprising a fiat member adapted to rest on the jamb element and pass between said elements and having a lateral projection at one end portion engageable against one of said elements, an arm pivotally mounted at one end on the other end portion of said flat member so as to swing in a parallel plane adjacent the plane of said flat member, and a head adjustably mounted on the free end of said arm longitudinally thereof and adapted to abut one of said elements to hold the door element from hinging, said arm being constructed of separate sections telescopically engaged one within the other, and a means for holding said sections in various extended positions, said means comprising a peg engageable through an opening formed in one of said sections and selectively engageable with one of a plurality of openings formed in the other section, and a latch means for rigidly maintaining said peg in position within said openings, said latch means comprising a slidably mounted block mounted within a hollow formed in a portion of one of said sections and adjustably supporting said head, a latch member extending along the outsidevof said sections and having one of its ends fixedly attached to the outer end of said peg, said latch element having the other of its ends extended into said hollow and engageable into an opening formed in the rear face of said block for holding said end in position within said hollow and for holding said peg in position within said openings.
4. A safety lock device for a door element hingedly mounted to a jamb element, comprising a flat member adapted to rest on the jamb element and pass between said elements and having a lateral projection at one end portion engageable against one of said elements, an arm pivotally mounted at one end on the other end portion of said flat member so as to swing in a parallel plane adjacent the plane of said flat member, and a head adjustably mounted on the free end of said arm longitudinally thereof and adapted to abut one of said elements to hold the door element from hingi g, Said arm being constructed of separate sections telescopically engaged one within the other, and a means for holding said sections in variousextended positions, said means comprising a peg engageable through an Opening formed in one of said sections and selectively engageable with one of a plurality of openings formed in the other section, and a latch means for rigidly maintaining said peg in position within said openings, said latch means comprising a slidably mounted block mounted within a hollow formed in a portion of one of said sections and adjustably supporting said head, a latch member extending along the outside of said sections and having one of its ends fixedly atelement having the other of its ends extended into said hollow and engageable into an opening formed in the rear face'of said block for holding said end in position Within said hollow and for holding said peg in position within said openings, and a leaf spring having one of its ends attached to a portion of said arm and the other of its ends engaging against said latch element for assisting in maintaining it in a fixed position.
