Description

V AUTO AwNING I March 25, 1930.
Filed Nov. 24, 1926 Patented Mar. 25, 1930 PATENT OFFIQE GILBERT L. NEWKIRK, 0F EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS AUTO AWNING Appneation mea NovemberY 24, 192e. serial No. 150,492.
My invention relates to awnings, and especially to that type of awning used on automobiles.
The specific object of my invention'is to provide a slidable brace by means of which an awning may be held taut in any position from opened to closed. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide means for. vertically adjusting the position of the awning, thereby readily adapting it to automobiles already in use.
In the drawings,
Fig. l is la front elevation, showing the awning closed up on the inside of the car.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, showing the awning closed.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the awning when opened. Y
One of the chief defects of awnings as used on automobiles is the tendencyvof the awning, by reason ofV the movement'of the car, to vibrate upwardly and downwardly.
Another disadvantage commonlyV met with in the manufacture and sale of awnings to automobile users isl the great variety in the Vheight of the openings, making it difficult to adjust a standard awning to the body of an automobile without defacing it.
To take care of these disadvantages, I haveV provided an awning of the conventional type, in which suitable fabric l is adapted to be rolled up on a roller 2, actuated by means of an internal spring, not shown.
The fabric lis held taut when the awning is open for use by means of an arm 3 slotted at 4 and hinged at 5. Slidably disposed in the slot 4 is a T-headed thumbscrew 6, of such diameter that it freely slides in the slot 4 when screwed into the outer end of the brace 7, which said brace is pivotally attached at 8 to a holding bar 9, said holding bar 9 being slotted at 10-10 and rigidly held against the facing 11 of theopening in the car, by means of screws l2 having heads of suficient diameters to engage the edges of the slots 10. The purpose of this construction is to permit vertical adjustmentv of the holding bar 9.
It is obvious that when the Vawning is opened as shown in Fig. 3, the T-headed thumbscrew 6 will automatically adjust itself in the slot 4, where it can be screwed up tight holding the awning rigidly in place.
Vhen it is desired to close the awning, the thumbscrew 6 is loosened and the coil spring, notl shown, in the roller 2 rewinds the fabric l about the vroller and closes up the arm 3 and brace 7 in a neat manner, flush with the facing 11 of the opening, and on' the insidev of the vglass 13, thereby protecting the awning from the weather when not in use, and also permits closing vof the opening by the glass 13.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new anduseful, and'desire to secure byLetters Patent is Y i An awning bracket of the class described, comprisingv a holding. member vertically adjustable by means of longitudinalfslots in each end adapted to be slidably movable on screws screwed into a window casing, a slotted arm pivotally attached at one end to the lower end of said holding member and adapted to be attached at its opposite end to an awning,'a second arm pivotally at- 55 tached to said holding member intermediate of the ends of said holding member, a locking member slidable in 'a slot in said first mentioned arm and means for locking said..` n first and said second mentioned arms in various adjusted positions.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 7th day of October, 1926.
