G. G UGL! ELM l HAIRfRETAINING DEVICE Filed oct. 276, 1938 i U Il' INVENTOR. .E//v/ Patented Sept. 26, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR-RETAINING DEVICE poration of New York Application October 26, 1938, Serial No. 236,990
1 Claim.
My invention relates to a new and improved device for retaining the hair in a predetermined position. l
The principal object of my invention is to p-rovide a device for retaining the hair which device is particularly adapted to be applied to the back of the head.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hair-retaining device which may be used to train the hair to lie upwardly as is common in certain types of hair coiffures.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hair-retaining device which may be easily applied to the back of the head and which can be readily conformed to the configuration of the back of the head and yet be rigid enough to for cbly keep the hair in a predetermined position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hair retaining device which may be locally applied to any part of the head.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hair net having a pliable frame and a mesh or net-like body portion.
Another object of my invention is to provide a haireretaining device of simple construction which may be easily and cheaply manufactured and which may be applied locally to any part of the head.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing, which illustrate a preferred embodiment( thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 shows my improved hair-retaining device in operation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of my device with the body portion partially broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of that part of Fig. 2 having the body portion partially broken away for the purpose of showing the frame construction.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the line 4 4 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, the device consists of a body portion B and a frame portion F. The
body portion B may be formed of any elastic material. In the present embodiment a mesh like material is used but any other elastic material or fabric such as netting, woven or knitted material may be used. The frame portion F is formed by 5 the two wires I and 2 which are cotton covered and which are enmeshed in the body portion along the outer edge thereof. Celluloid, any plastic or resinous material, or any other material having the required properties can be substituted 10 for said wires. If the body B is made of a fabric which does not lend itself to-having the frame F enmeshed in` its outer edge, an edge loop or hem may be sewn thereon and the frame slipped into this. 15
3 and 4 are fabric bands attached to the ends of the frame F and serve the purpose of securing the device to the head. Any other means may be used which accomplishes this same purpose, such as an elastic band having its opposite ends at- 20 tached to the opposite ends of the frame.
It will be observed in Fig. 1 how conveniently my device may be used for training the hair situated on the back of the head to lie upwardly, which result is sought for in many types of coif- 25 fures now common. However, I do not Wish to be limited to the shape of the device shown in the present embodiments, since this may be changed to fulfill any other special needs which might arise. 30
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
In a hair retaining device, an elliptical shaped frame comprising closely spaced apart pliable members having coverings thereon, a body portion of mesh material within said frame, the outer portions of said mesh material being secured between and over said spaced apart members, and bands attached to the ends of said frame member for securing the device to the head of the wearer whereby the frame members are flexed transversely.
