Description

June 16, 1931. v c; WRENSHALL 1,809,956
EYE SHIELD Filed May 29, 1930 Inventor 6. 1r ZlQnJa/Z Alt mey' Patented June 16, 1931 CHARLES N. WBEN'SHALL, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA YnsnIELn Application filed May 29, 1930. Serial No. 457,187.
The present invention relates'to new and useful improvements in eye shields and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set'forth, a device of this character embodying novel means for pre-. venting perspiration from running into the eyes of a wearerof the device. 1 Another important object of the invention is to provide an eye shield of the Character described including a visor and a head encircling bandeau for supporting said visor in position on the head of the wearer, the device further embodying a novel construction and arrangement for connecting the bandeau to the visor'in such a manner that said bandeau will function as a perspiration absorbing pad.
o A further important object of the invention is to provide an eye shield ofthe characfor set forth wherein the bandeau is detach-v ably connected to the visor for the purpose of permitting the same to be expeditiously removed when it is desired to launder the same or to replace the same.
' A still further important feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for mounting the visor in position in such a manner that the body portion thereof will not come into contact withthe head of the wearer, thus assuring a maximum of comfort.
Other objectsof the invention are to pro vide an eye shield which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with 40 the accompanying vdrawings wherein like characters of reference designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, and wher-einz- Figure 1 is a view in top plan of aneye shield constructed in accordance with this invention with a bandeau mounted thereon. Figure 2 is a detail view in elevation of the bandea-u.
Figure 3 is a detail View of the bandeau showing the same in edge elevation.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line H of Figure 1 with the bandeau removed from the visor.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 desig- '5' nates a visor which may be of any desired configuration and which is to be formed of any suitable material. The visor 1 is preferably formed to conform substantially to the r I forehead of the wearer and has formed on its no inner marginal portion a pluralityof spaced eyes or loops 2. As illustrated in the drawings the eyes or loops 2 are of circular configuration and formed integrally with the Visor 1 but it is to be understood that said 5 eyes be of any desired configuration and formed of separate pieces to be attached to the visor. V
It is further understood thatany desired number ofthe' eyes may be provided and the 79 same may be disposed at anydesired point on the visor 1. I i
The eyes or loops 2 are'for the passage of a head encircling supporting bandeau 3 which, in the present instance comprises a strip of flexible material of appropriate width and length which is folded upon itself intermediate its ends and inserted through the eyes 2. The folds of the bandeau may be stitchedtogether along their longis0 tudinal marginal portions from the free vends thereof to a point in spaced relation to" the fold line thereof as indicated at 4 and in a manner to provide a loop 5' through which the stitched togetherfree end portions of said bandeau are inserted in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 to secure said bandeau around the head of the wearer.
'In use, the'bandeau 3 is engaged with the head of the wearer and will} thus absorb-per 9i) spiration thereby preventing said perspiration from running down into the eyes, it bein understood, of course, that the bandeau is of a suitable absorbent material. It .will further be readily apparent that the visor 1 will be securely supported in position in spaced relation with respectto the head of the wearer and that only the eyes 2 will contact with the wearers head. When :it is desired to remove the bandeaufrom the visor Me for laundering or replacing the same it is only necessary to slide said bandeau out of the eyes 2. The visor and the bandeau are preferably in attractive colors or a combination of colors and, if desired, a number of the bandeaus of various colors may be provided with each visor in order that a choice of the combination of colors may be had.
It is believed that the many advantages of an eye shield constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it
is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor, a series of eyes mounted on one marginal portion of said visor and projecting therefrom, and a strip of flexible, moisture absorbing material extending through the eyes and constituting means for supporting the visor on the head of a wearer.
2. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor, a series of eyes on one marginal portion of said visor in spaced relation with respect to each other, said eyes projecting from the visor, and a flexible strip of moisture absorbing material removably disposed through the eyes and constituting means for supporting the visor in position on the head of a wearer in spaced relation to Said wearers head.
3. An eye shield ofthe character described comprising a visor, a series of spaced, integraleyes on one marginal portion of the visor and projectin therefrom, and a flexible strip of moisture a sorbing material removably disposed through the eyes for encircling the head of a wearer and constituting means for supporting the visor in position thereon in spaced relation thereto.
4. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor having an arcuate edge conforming substantially to the head of a wearer, a series of integral eyes mounted integrally on the arcuate marginal portion of said visor and projecting therefrom, and a flexible strip of moisture absorbing material removably inserted through the eyes and adapted to encircle the head of the wearer in ai'manner to support the visor'in position thereon in spaced relation thereto.
5. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor having an inwardly curved edge, aseries of integral eyes mounted inspaced relation with respect to each other on the inwardly curved-marginal portion of thevisor and projectin therefrom, and a head encircling band of flexible, moisture absorbing' 'material removably inserted through the eyesand engageable with the forehead of thewwearer :in a manner to absorb moisture therefrom, said strip further constituting means for mounting the visor in position on the forehead of the wearer in spaced relation thereto.
6. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor, a plurality of eyes on one marginal portion of said visor and projecting therefrom, and means for supporting the visor in position on the head of a wearer, said means comprising a strip of flexible, moisture absorbing material folded upon itself and removably inserted through the eyes, said strip adapted to encircle the head of the wearer and having a loop formed at the fold line thereof for connecting the end portions of said strip thereto.
7. An eye shield of the character described comprising a visor, a series of eyes on one marginal portion of said vi'sor projecting therefrom, and means for securing the visor in position on the head of a wearer, said means comprising an elongated strip of flexible moisture absorbing material folded upon itself intermediate its ends, the folds of said strip stitched together from the opposite ends thereof to a point in spaced relation to the fold line in a manner to provide a loop, said folded strip removably inserted through the eyes and adapted to encircle the head of the wearer, said loop adapted for the passage of the free end portion of the strip in a manner to secure said strip in position about the wearers head.
In testimony whereof I affix my si nature.
CHARLES N. WRENsrfALL.
