6 Claims. (Cl. 139-150) My invention is a stabilizing device for the picker stick of a loom.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which will cooperate with the picker stick shoe and oscillating stand to prevent relative wobbling movements between the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which will also serve as a bumper or check for the picker stick.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Wear element or bushing for arrangement between the engaging faces of the picker stick shoe and oscillating stand.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. f

Attention being called rst to Figures l to 3, inclusive, the numeral Il! designates the loom frame, carrying the usual lay rock shaft Il, to which is secured the oscillating stand or foot I2. Arranged beneath the stand I2 and attached thereto in the usual manner is a spring actuated drum I3, having a strap I4 connected therewith to be wound thereon by the action of the spring, as is customary. Arranged above the. oscillating stand I2 is a picker stick I5, having a shoe I6 mounted upon its lower end and rigidly secured thereto by means of a bolt I1. The shoe I@ rocks longitudinally upon the oscillating stand I2, and oscillates therewith, as is customary. The picker stick is actuated by any suitable means, indicated at I8. The foregoing description is that of the conventional elements of a loom.
My stabilizing device embodies a body portion or block I9 (Figures l to 3, inclusive) from which depends an open frame or yoke 29, preferably integral therewith. This yoke comprises spaced sides ZI and a bottom or cross bar 22, preferably integral with the sides. This bottom or cross bar is provided with an upstanding hook 2.3 haw ing connection with the outer end of the strap I4. The body portion I9 is provided near its upper end with apertured ears 2li, for receiving bolts 25, which pass through apertured ears 26 of a companion clamp 21, the picker stick being arranged between the elements I9 and 21, and the bolts 25 being disposed upon opposite sides of the picker stick. The body portion I9 is provided near its lower end with an opening for the passage of the bolt I1. It is thus seen that the body portion is clamped to the picker stick.
The outer end portions of the shoe I6 and the oscillating stand I2 extend through the yoke 2D with a slight clearance between the same and the sides 2l thereof. A follower or head 28 is arranged beneath the oscillating stand I2 and engages the lower face of the same near its outer end, and this follower or head is arranged between the sides 2I with a slight clearance between the same, which prevents any considerable turning movement of the follower. The follower has a sleeve 29 rigidly secured thereto and depending therefrom, and this sleeve is slidably mounted upon a vertical shaft 30, which is rigidly attached to the bottom or cross-bar 22. A
-suitably stiff compressible coil spring 3| surrounds the shaft 3U, and is confined between the bottom or cross bar 22 and the followed or head 28 to urge the head upwardly.
The numeral 32 designates an inwardly tapering wear blade, element, or bushing, adapted to be arranged between the outer ends of the shoe IB and the oscillating stand I2, to compensate for the wear upon these contacting end portions. The element 22 is carried by a curved shank 33, rigidly secured to a plate 34. This plate has an elongated opening or slot 35 formed therein, for the passage of the bolt I1. The wear element 32 is adjusted longitudinally of the shoe I6 by the use of washers 3B, disposed upon the bolt I1 inwardly of the same. The bolt I1 carries a nut 31.
While it is preferred to use the wear element 32 with the stabilizing device, they may be used separately.
In Figures 4 and 5, the wear element is shown in use, without the stabilizing device. When the stabilizing device is omitted, the strap I 4 is attached to the lower end of the picker stick, as is customary. The wear element or bushing shown in Figures 4 and 5, embodies an inwardly tapering plate or blade 38 arranged between the outer ends of the shoe I6 and oscillating stand I2. This plate or blade is carried by a curved shank 39, having a socket or head 40, rigidly secured thereto. This socket or head is U-shaped in horizontal cross-section and is adapted to straddle the edge of the picker stick. The head 4! is clamped to the picker stick by the bolt I1 passing through an elongated slot 4I so that the head may be vertically adjusted upon the picker stick. The blade 38 is adjusted longitudinally of the shoe i6 by arranging a washer or washers 42 within the head, as shown.
The operation of the'rst formofthe invention, as shown in Figures l to 3, inclusive, is as follows:
When the device is appliedA tothe. picker stick, the follower or head 28 engages beneath the oscillating stand I2, and the spring' 3i|2 isf under tension. This spring remains. under tension during the entire rocking movement of the shoe I6 upon the stand. The spring 3l andasso-- ciated elements therefore serve to retain the shoe I6 in` rm engagement with the stand, preventing relative lateral movements between the parts I6 and I2". In' addition to this action of the device as a stabilizing connection between the' picker stick and the oscillating` stand; the device also serves asa check or bumper' for the picker stick. When thepicker' stick is' swung inwardly, the outer end of the' shoe I6" is raised and" the yoke 2l! is raised with relationY to` the oscillating stand IZ, thus causing the follower orv head 28' to compress the spring 3|. When the picker stick l5 is swung to the extreme outer position, the yoke 2B is also raised with' respect to the oscillating stand. I2 and the spring 3| compressed. The spring is permanently under suitable tension, as it is compressed when the follower or head 28 is arranged beneath the oscillating stand, as stated', but the extent of compression. is increased at the ends. of the movement of the picker stick. Further, when the end portions of the shoe IB and oscillating stand I2 wear, in order that the picker stick will properly swing, the tapered. wear element or bushing 32' is projected' a suitable distancebe'- tween the engaging faces' of the shoe I6 and oscillating stand` l'2, the extent that the wear element 32 is to be passed between the elements I6 and i2 depending upon the extentv that' these elements have become worn..
In Figure 1l,V the stabilizing device is omitted and the wear element or bushing 38 is shown applied to the picker stick and arranged to pass between the engaging faces of the shoe lB and oscillating stand I2..
Itis to be understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown. and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement' of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of. my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having `described my invention, what I claim l. In a device for connection with a picker stick, as a sub-combination a yoke to be attached to the picker stick and adapted' to receive the ends of a shoe and oscillating stand therein, yielding means carried by the yoke to engage the lower face of the stand, and a wear element attached to the yoke and including a blade projecting longitudinally between the ends of the contacting faces of the shoe and stand.
2. In a loom, the combination with an oscillating stand, of a picker stick, a shoe secured to the picker stick to rock upon the oscillating stand` and. a device having aV shank. mounted 10 upon` the picker stick and af wearA bladeV projecting between the shoe and stand.
