Abstract
An inflatable mattress apparatus for cushioning a user with a removable topper includes a hollow body with a topper removably coupled to a top wall of the body. The topper is coupled to the body such that a padding can be inserted into a gap formed between the body and the topper. The topper itself is compressible so as to cushion a user who lies on the topper.

- The disclosure relates to inflatable mattresses and more particularly pertains to a new inflatable mattress for cushioning a user with a removable topper.
- Some of the inflatable mattresses of the prior art include a cushioning topper positioned atop an inflatable body. The topper for some of these devices is removable from the inflatable body. However, the prior art does not disclose an inflatable mattress which includes a cushioning topper that is positionable to form a gap between the cushioning topper and the inflatable body for receiving a padding. The prior art additionally does not disclose such a device in which a connector for attaching the topper to the body also retains the padding in the gap. Such a device is desirable over the prior art, because it provides additional versatility for cushioning a user.
- An embodiment of the disclosure meets the needs presented above by generally comprising a body which is hollow and comprises a flexible material such that the body is movable between a compressed condition and an expanded condition. The body has a bottom wall, a perimeter wall, and a top wall, with the perimeter wall being coupled to and extending between the bottom wall and the top wall. A topper is removably connected to the top wall of the body. The topper is positioned on an exterior of the top wall and is compressible such that the topper is configured to cushion a user lying on the topper. A connector is coupled to the body and the topper and releasably connects the body and the topper together. The connector comprises a first mating member and a second mating member. The first mating member is coupled to the body, and the second mating member is coupled to the topper. A central portion of the topper is positionable spaced from the top wall of the body when the topper is connected to the top wall such that the topper, the top wall, and the connector bound a gap which is configured to contain a padding.
- There has thus been outlined, rather broadly, the more important features of the disclosure in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood, and in order that the present contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are additional features of the disclosure that will be described hereinafter and which will form the subject matter of the claims appended hereto.
- The objects of the disclosure, along with the various features of novelty which characterize the disclosure, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure.
- The disclosure will be better understood and objects other than those set forth above will become apparent when consideration is given to the following detailed description thereof. Such description makes reference to the annexed drawings wherein:

FIGS. 1 through 8 thereof, a new inflatable mattress embodying the principles and concepts of an embodiment of the disclosure and generally designated by thereference numeral 10 will be described. - As best illustrated in
FIGS. 1 through 8 , theinflatable mattress apparatus 10 generally comprises abody 12 which is hollow and comprises a flexible material such that thebody 12 is movable between a compressed condition (not shown) and an expandedcondition 16. Thebody 12 has abottom wall 18, aperimeter wall 22, and atop wall 20. Theperimeter wall 22 is coupled to and extends between thebottom wall 18 and thetop wall 20. Thebody 12 is elongated between afirst end 24 and asecond end 26. Theperimeter wall 22 has afirst end section 28, asecond end section 30, and a pair oflateral sections 32. Eachlateral section 32 of the pair oflateral sections 32 is coupled to and extending between thefirst end section 28 and thesecond end section 30. - A
topper 34 is removably connected to and is coextensive with thetop wall 20 of thebody 12. Thetopper 34 is positioned on anexterior 36 of thetop wall 20. Thetopper 34 comprises acasing 38 and a filling 40. Thefilling 40 is enclosed by thecasing 38 and comprises a compressible material such that thefilling 40 is configured to cushion auser 42 lying on thetopper 34. The compressible material comprises a cotton fiber but may comprise a polymer foam, a down, a wool, or the like. Aconnector 44 is coupled to thebody 12 and thetopper 34 and releasably connects thebody 12 and thetopper 34 together. Theconnector 44 comprises afirst mating member 46 and asecond mating member 48, wherein thefirst mating member 46 is coupled to thebody 12 and thesecond mating member 48 is coupled to thetopper 34. Thefirst mating member 46 extends along a perimeter of thetop wall 20, and thesecond mating member 48 extends along a peripheral edge of thetopper 34. Theconnector 44 comprises azipper 50 but may comprise a plurality of snap fasteners, a hook-and-loop fastener, or the like. - A
central portion 52 of thetopper 34 is positionable spaced from thetop wall 20 of thebody 12 when thetopper 34 is connected to thetop wall 20 such that thetopper 34, thetop wall 20, and theconnector 44 bound agap 54. Thegap 54 is configured to contain apadding 56 which may provide additional cushioning to thetopper 34. - A
pouch 58 is coupled to thebody 12 and is positioned on an associated one of the pair oflateral sections 32 of theperimeter wall 22 and adjacent to thefirst end section 28 of theperimeter wall 22. Thepouch 58 comprises aback panel 60 and afront panel 62. Atop edge 64 of theback panel 60 is coupled to anupper edge 66 of the associatedlateral section 32 of theperimeter wall 22. Thefront panel 62 is coupled to abottom edge 68 and a pair oflateral edges 70 of theback panel 60. Thefront panel 62 and theback panel 60 forming acavity 72 therebetween, and thecavity 72 has anopening 74 which faces upwardly. - A
pump 76 is mounted to theperimeter wall 22 and is in fluid communication with an interior side and an exterior side of theperimeter wall 22. Thepump 76 is configured to selectively urge air into thebody 12 to move thebody 12 from the compressed condition to the expandedcondition 16. Anelectrical cord 78 is electrically coupled to thepump 76 and is configured to electrically couple to an external power source. Thepump 76 may also be operable to urge air out of saidbody 12 to move thebody 12 from the expandedcondition 16 to the compressed condition. Ahousing 80 is mounted to theperimeter wall 22 adjacent to thepump 76. Theelectrical cord 78 is storable in achamber 82 positioned in thehousing 80. Thehousing 80 includes adoor 84 which is movable between an open position and a closed position with respect to thechamber 82 to selectively access thechamber 82. - A
port tube 86 is mounted to theperimeter wall 22 and is in fluid communication with the interior side and the exterior side of theperimeter wall 22. Theport tube 86 is configured for facilitating releasing air from thebody 12 to move thebody 12 from the expandedcondition 16 to the compressed condition and for facilitating moving air into thebody 12 from an extrinsic pump to move thebody 12 from the compressed condition to the expandedcondition 16. Acap 88 is releasably engaged to theport tube 86 to close an outlet of theport tube 86. Thecap 88 is configured to prevent air moving through theport tube 86 when thecap 88 is engaged with theport tube 86. - In use, the
body 12 is inflated to the expandedcondition 16. Thetopper 34 may be connected to thetop wall 20 if desired to provide cushioning on thetop wall 20. If thetopper 34 is connected to thetop wall 20, thepadding 56 may also be positioned between thetop wall 20 and thetopper 34. Thepadding 56 is retained in thegap 54 between thetop wall 20 and thetopper 34 via theconnector 44, thetop wall 20, and thetopper 34 enclosing thegap 54. Thepadding 56 provides further cushioning in addition to thetopper 34. Acell phone 90, speaker, or other object may be stored in thepouch 58. - With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of an embodiment enabled by the disclosure, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by an embodiment of the disclosure.
- Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the disclosure. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the disclosure to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the disclosure. In this patent document, the word “comprising” is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article “a” does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be only one of the elements.
Claims (16)
1. An inflatable mattress apparatus comprising:
a body, the body being hollow, the body comprising a flexible material such that the body is movable between a compressed condition and an expanded condition, the body having a bottom wall, a perimeter wall, and a top wall, the perimeter wall being coupled to and extending between the bottom wall and the top wall;
a topper being removably connected to the top wall of the body, the topper being positioned on an exterior of the top wall, the topper being compressible such that the topper is configured to cushion a user lying on the topper;
a connector being coupled to the body and the topper, the connector releasably connecting the body and the topper together, the connector comprising a first mating member and a second mating member, the first mating member being coupled to the body, the second mating member being coupled to the topper; and
wherein a central portion of the topper is positionable spaced from the top wall of the body when the topper is connected to the top wall such that the topper, the top wall, and the connector bound a gap, the gap being configured to contain a padding.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the topper comprising a casing and a filling, the filling being enclosed by the casing, the filling comprising a compressible material such that the filling is configured to cushion the user.
3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the compressible material comprises a cotton fiber.
4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first mating member extends along a perimeter of the top wall.
5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second mating member extends along a peripheral edge of the topper.
6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the connector comprises a zipper.
7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the topper is coextensive with the top wall of the body.
8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a pouch being coupled to the body.
9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the body is elongated between a first end and a second end, the perimeter wall having a first end section, a second end section, and a pair of lateral sections, each lateral section of the pair of lateral sections being coupled to and extending between the first end section and the second end section, the pouch being positioned on an associated one of the pair of lateral sections of the perimeter wall and adjacent to the first end section of the perimeter wall.
10. The apparatus of claim the pouch comprises:
a back panel, a top edge of the back panel being coupled to an upper edge of the associated lateral section of the perimeter wall; and
a front panel being coupled to a bottom edge and a pair of lateral edges of the back panel, the front panel and the back panel forming a cavity therebetween, the cavity having an opening facing upwardly.
11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a pump being mounted to the perimeter wall and being in fluid communication with an interior side and an exterior side of the perimeter wall, the pump being configured to selectively urge air into the body to move the body from the compressed condition to the expanded condition.
12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an electrical cord being electrically coupled to the pump and being configured to electrically couple to an external power source.
13. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a housing being mounted to the perimeter wall adjacent to the pump, the electrical cord being storable in a chamber positioned in the housing, the housing including a door which is movable between an open position and a closed position with respect to the chamber to selectively access the chamber.
14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a port tube being mounted to the perimeter wall and being in fluid communication with the interior side and the exterior side of the perimeter wall, the port tube being configured for facilitating releasing air from the body to move the body from the expanded condition to the compressed condition, the port tube being configured for facilitating moving air into the body from an extrinsic pump to move the body from the compressed condition to the expanded condition.
15. The apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a cap being releasably engaged to the port tube to close an outlet of the port tube, the cap being configured to prevent air moving through the port tube when the cap is engaged with the port tube.
16. An inflatable mattress apparatus comprising:
a body, the body being hollow, the body comprising a flexible material such that the body is movable between a compressed condition and an expanded condition, the body having a bottom wall, a perimeter wall, and a top wall, the perimeter wall being coupled to and extending between the bottom wall and the top wall, the body being elongated between a first end and a second end, the perimeter wall having a first end section, a second end section, and a pair of lateral sections, each lateral section of the pair of lateral sections being coupled to and extending between the first end section and the second end section;
a topper being removably connected to and being coextensive with the top wall of the body, the topper being positioned on an exterior of the top wall, the topper comprising a casing and a filling, the filling being enclosed by the casing, the filling comprising a compressible material such that the filling is configured to cushion a user lying on the topper, the compressible material comprising a cotton fiber;
a connector being coupled to the body and the topper, the connector releasably connecting the body and the topper together, the connector comprising a first mating member and a second mating member, the first mating member being coupled to the body, the second mating member being coupled to the topper, the first mating member extending along a perimeter of the top wall, the second mating member extending along a peripheral edge of the topper, the connector comprising a zipper;
wherein a central portion of the topper is positionable spaced from the top wall of the body when the topper is connected to the top wall such that the topper, the top wall, and the connector bound a gap, the gap being configured to contain a padding;
a pouch being coupled to the body, the pouch being positioned on an associated one of the pair of lateral sections of the perimeter wall and adjacent to the first end section of the perimeter wall, the pouch comprising:
a back panel, a top edge of the back panel being coupled to an upper edge of the associated lateral section of the perimeter wall; and
a front panel being coupled to a bottom edge and a pair of lateral edges of the back panel, the front panel and the back panel forming a cavity therebetween, the cavity having an opening facing upwardly;
a pump being mounted to the perimeter wall and being in fluid communication with an interior side and an exterior side of the perimeter wall, the pump being configured to selectively urge air into the body to move the body from the compressed condition to the expanded condition;
an electrical cord being electrically coupled to the pump and being configured to electrically couple to an external power source;
a housing being mounted to the perimeter wall adjacent to the pump, the electrical cord being storable in a chamber positioned in the housing, the housing including a door which is movable between an open position and a closed position with respect to the chamber to selectively access the chamber;
a port tube being mounted to the perimeter wall and being in fluid communication with the interior side and the exterior side of the perimeter wall, the port tube being configured for facilitating releasing air from the body to move the body from the expanded condition to the compressed condition, the port tube being configured for facilitating moving air into the body from an extrinsic pump to move the body from the compressed condition to the expanded condition; and
a cap being releasably engaged to the port tube to close an outlet of the port tube, the cap being configured to prevent air moving through the port tube when the cap is engaged with the port tube.
