Description

F. C. CHOATE MARKING DEVICE Sept. 3, H35.
Filed NOV. 30, 1934 Fired C.. C'Zzoa' Patented Sept. 3, 1935 L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MARKING DEVICE Fred C. Choate, Greenville, Mich.
Application November 30, 1934, Serial No. 755,345
' 2 Claims. (Cl. 40-16) The present invention relates to marking de- `vices for horticultural planting and the like; and its object is to provide an improved device of that character simple and economical in construction, having means for mounting oppositely facing labeling sheets and means for protecting the same against injury.
This and any other or more specic objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the device particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which: e
Figure 1 is an elevational View of my marking device thrust into theground;V i
Figure 2 is an elevational View of the opposite side of the upper portion thereof, labeling sheets being shown held in the device in these views;
Figure 3 is a top view of the device (enlarged), said sheets being removed; Y
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view (enlarged) [of the device `and said `sheets therein taken on line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on line 5-5 of Figures 1 and 4; and
`Figure 6 is a view of a'met-al plate blank from which part of the device may be formed.
The marking deviceillustrated by this drawing comprises a body portion or frame desirably of lsheet metal and indicated generally I, and a vertical rod or post 2V desirably of Wire joined thereto for supporting the same as by spot ,weide ing indicated at 3, and adapted to be thrust into the ground as shown in Figure 1, the rods thin plate 4 desirably of metal preventing the rod from turning `in the ground.
The frame I is adapted tohold a pair of label ing sheets 5, 6 marked with characters indicating seeds or plants are of different kinds, the sheets 5, 6 facing such kinds respectively are correspondingly marked. `Said frame has a pair of open spaces or windowsv 1, Blfor displaying the `markings on the oppositely facing sheets 5, 6 respectively, and is desirably formed by cutting out along the dotted line I6 the middle portion 9 of the sheet metal blank I0 shown in Figure 6 to `form one window' 'I having the vertical sides II and horizontal ends I2, and turning over the portions I3 `of the blank along the dotted lines I4 to form the vertical sides I5 of the opposite space or window `8. The oppositely facing sheets 5, 6 are vertically slid side by side into the frame, their vertical edges sliding in the opposite bights I'I formed by the turned over portions I3 of the blank IIJ which constitute the sides I5 of the window space 8.
Inv order to protect the labeling sheets from injury arising from Wear, moisture, etc. their faces are covered by a thin transparent shield or Window pane designated generally I 8 of Celluloid or the like inserted with the sheets into the frame.` This sheet is folded transversely in its `middle to provide opposite portions or flaps I9 extending outside the sheets respectively and across the Windows and connected by a top bight portion 20 extending over the sheets outer (upper) ends.
As this shield I8 `thus covers the sheets at their outer ends, and covers their faces and fits snugly in the frames bights I'I, it will be seen` that it adequately protects said sheets from moisture and from wear or marring of their faces.
I claim:
l. `A device of the class described comprising in combination, a frame consisting of a corn- `paratively rigid sheet having a pair of opposite window openings, one of said window openings being an aperture through the middleof the i sheet, the sheets opposite side portions being turned over toward each other into spaced apart relation, said turned over sides forming the opposite sides of said other window opening and forming parallelly disposed bight portions, a pair of labeling sheets in oppositely facing relation displayed through the window openings respectively with their opposite edges received in Said bight portions, and a thin transparent sheet ren ceived and held in said bight portions and extending over the outer end of the labeling sheets and across the window openings respectively and covering the faces of the labeling sheets.
2. A device of the class described comprising in combination, a frame havinga window opening in its .middle and opposite side portions turned over toward each other lnto spacedapart relation, forming the opposite sides of a second Window opening and forming parallelly disposed bight portions, a pair of labeling sheets in oppo-4 sitely facing relation displayed through the Window openings respectively, and a thin transparent sheet received and held in said bight portions` and extending over the outer end of the labeling sheets to prevent water from entering therebetween and across the window openings and covering the face of the labeling sheets.
